What Turbo is this? [Merged] Turbo ID Identification

If the compressor or turbine wheels touch the sides of the housing, it makes a very loud howling sound. I'd replace the turbo before it grenades and sends bearing pieces to your oil pan and a quart of oil through your intercooler, pipes, and motor. Mine howled for a week or so before it grenaded.

Check shaft play to see if there is excessive side/side (so that it hits the housing) an any in/out. The turbo might just make a funny sound with the bent fin, but it might also unbalance the turbo so that it doesn't spin true once its spooled and starts rubbing the housing.

Here is a picture from my gallery.. it might help out...

Here is a picture of my garrett t28. You can see the difference between the t25 and the t28. The t25 compressor wheel is about the size of a quarter and the t28 compressor wheel is about the size of a 50 cent piece. It does look like you have a t25,

8 fins on the compressor side and 11 fins on the exhaust side
A/R 60 I think it says then below that someone seems to have etched 817B-8
It also says M12 then some space then 4 then space then B then space then L
All off the above is written on the compressor side of the turbo
The guy I bought the car from included the Old turbo and I think the replaced it with a 14b the one on
their looks smaller then this one. Any ideas what this one is?
It also has some shaft play anyone know if its worth rebuilding and where can I get the parts?

hello,
Well i need some help. I recently obtained a car from a friend with ALOT of parts. One of them was a turbonetics turbo i know it's a t3/t4 hybrid. I has a polished cold side that say "Turbonetics" on it in small red letters, the other side of the cold side is blue! The center section has the Turbonetics "t". THe hot side is t3 flange for sure and has a 5 bolt. There is no wastegate the setup that it was using was a turbonetics manifold and a tial 38mm! If anyone knows what kind of turbo this is please tell me! I was guessing it was a 50 trim? THere are a few numbers on the blue cover. THe sooner i find out what it is the sooner it will be forsale.
I will have pics up later

We won't even be able to tell from photos.

You'll need to remove the compressor cover and turbine housing then measure the inducer/exducer diameter of each wheel in order to tell it's actual size.

You may also try to contact Turbonetics and give them some of the numbers from the turbo....most of their turbos have a sticker on the compressor cover's backplate with some numbers. Don't expect a quick friendly response from Turbonetics, though.

damn that sucks! I dont want to take it apart, because it's my friends and he wants me to sell it. I know its a t3/t4, i think it's a 50 or 56 trim. I just want to get rid of it. I would think with it being new, turbonetics and polished. I shouldn't have any problem getting 500 out of it.

You'll need to know what you've got to be able to sell it.
It's not that difficult to figure out either.

Just unbolt the compressor cover (6 bolts, IIRC) and use a set of dial calipers to measure the inducer and exducer of the wheel.

Also, the turbine housing should have some sort of decimal casted into it. One of these three: .36, .48, .63, .82. Let us know which one it is.

I dont have dial calipers and wouldn't even know where to get a cheap set. THe housing doesn't have anything wrote on it except for the Turbonetics "T"

here are some pics. the turbo got some oil on it thats why it looks different.

Hey guys trying to figure out what turbo is on my car. The last couple of numbers are9178-0 fo what i can see without takin the car apart. i've been lookin. and i narrowed it down to a 16 g but is it a mhi? how can i tell. Thanks guys

If its staggered and the compressor housing says TD05H on it, most likely its a 16G variant, which one? who knows. You can bring up a search on 16G serial numbers.

If its an MHI turbo it should look like this. This is an MHI EVO III 16g but all MHI 16g's will have the same compressor casting marks aside from the serial numbers.
