My turbo rebuilder is having my HX40 Pro balanced for $40. I just hope it balances successfully so I can alleviate my fear that the shaft could be bent. The last thing I need to mess with before I can bolt up this bad boy and hit the dyno is the turbine housing. This turbo was sold to me with a 16cm housing attached (which as far as I know will not bolt up to my manifold.) However, I was able to convince the seller to include a 19cm holset housing he had laying around free of charge. It is a little rusty and really dirty but I think it's O.K. I'm curious if I should get it ceramic coated and also if I will need to make any adjustments to the 19cm housing to make it work with my t4 flanged manifold and 44mm external wg?
 
You should portmatch the holes on the exhaust housing to match the more square holes of your t4 manifold.

I see you can get an hx35 with a BW compressor wheel (think extended tip) OMG !

Those are some good prices. But I wouldn't bother with a BW compressor wheel upgrade on the hx35 unless you plan on running the stock holset turbine housing. Which isn't included. . . But as low as there price is after modifying the CHRA and compressor cover and adding a BW wheel, I'll bet they will sell plain hx35 chra and conpressor covers for quite a bit under $600. You should call and find out. Perhaps they would do the same for the hx40 chra and compressor cover.
 
Just came in today:rocks: mine don't have the cast mark like We're on Boost does but mine is steel and not SS like his is? Now just waiting on STM to send my fuel stuff and then the fun will start. One more thing should I port the wastegate or are they fine from BEP?

I just bought the whole kit from Nick it took a little while to get in because he had to order the drain hose but other then that he had everthing in stock. :thumb:
 
That is a stainless steel housing. Just dunk it in water and see if it rusts. IT won't. That is just not polished.
 
^Definitely a knock-off.

And I just looked at the 2nd one, that is a knockoff as well. Notice where it says HX40 "STYLE."
 
Both of those are def knock offs.
 
First one does not have an authentic holset tag on the compressor cover, plus a few other oddities. The second one looks 100% genuine, but we can't see the compressor from the inlet, so there's a few other characteristics that cant be checked. . . Until you see the words "Custom made" LOL . We want holset-built holsets. Or reputable shops that build them. So I can see them both being knock offs.

. . . What a joke:) Remember guys. You can buy used and rebuild. What's the difference between a quality rebuilt turbo and a new turbo after you install it?
 
Well I just got the FP turbine housing back from my buddy who welded the new flange on for me, unfortunately his TIG was broken so the welds aren't as clean as they usually look. Here we go:

And the manifold and turbine housing are already off to be ceramic coated silver, should look great.

Leave the 44mm flange, or put the HKS flange in the same location? Well, I got the HKS wastegate for a STEAL(much less than a new tial 44mm) so I decided to use it instead. And the HKS one is very large, so I didn't want to have any problems with it getting in the way of the exhaust.
 
I meant put it in the same location, but you answered that question.

Here is the latest VGT that I picked up. Doubt anyone here will be really interested, you would need a manifold to place it over the tranny to even fit it in the engine bay. Its still a Holset though so it might be kind of cool to someone.

HE551V.
For diesels up to 16l and Holset rates the HE500 series for 295-650hp. Those are diesel numbers of course.

It will be going on one of our combines at home as another VGT experiment. I'll be measuring all the wheels and VGT nozzle area to include it in the VGT info on here when it comes.

Took it apart today and took some measurements and more pictures. It is one big SOB.

Wheel measurements.

Compressor
Inducer 71.75mm
Exducer 108.1mm

Turbine
Inducer 86mm
Exducer 75mm

From some clay and my calculations the VGT has an operating range of approximately 9cm^2 - 31cm^2
The compressor is a machined wheel that looks like what people refer to as a "billet" machined wheel. I stupidly forgot to try and determine whether it is aluminum or titanium. The backing plate was a bit rusty, otherwise the thing looks like its in great shape with normal shaft play.

Matt, what is this guy trying to explain?

I don't see how it would make a difference being on a gas or diesel engine.
 
The only thing I can think of is the size of the hole and flapper being too small.

The divided T3 18cm2 HX40 turbine housings I've seen had a TINY flapper- smaller than the size of a quarter, and it only pulled boost from one side of the divided housing. You can imagine how small the wastegate hole itself probably is in that case. To me that sure seemed like a small hole to control boost on such a large turbo.

Exactly. The diesel has less heat energy in the exhaust for a given mass flow too. Also, on the diesel running 25-30 psi is expected so creep isn't an issue. On a v8, creep or a minimum boost of 25-30 psi wouldn't be too much fun.
 
Thanks Justin. I figured it was something like that, this guy was sounding like he thought the turbo couldn't be used at all because of this. I will tell him go external.
 
^they are 100% correct. Diesels have less energy in the exhaust. And thus less wastegating is needed to keep over boost in check.

Nothing a port job and a larger flapper can't solve. Or external gating. The hx35 has gating on only 1 side of the twin scrolls. He will need to cut down the divider. Or like you're suggesting just run an external gate.
 
Get that VGT working, i want to use it on my new project.
(project probably won't start for a few years, so just keep us updated)

Oh yeah i could probably use the big one on the project.
 
Not to get off topic but I just finally got my .55 AR bep housing on my hx35 7blade. Question is has anyone else had a problem with the 2g o2 housing stopping the internal flapper from opening all the way? I just ordered an aftermarket ebay one with an atmospheric dump hoping that will solve the problem or am I going to just end up grinding that down anyways?
