Excellent results. And thanks for the update.

How does she spool now w/ it running better?

Did you have to mess w/ the hertz sliders after hacking the gm maf? I have the 3" gm maf. It only has 1 honeycomb. . . Which gm maf do you have?

Spool is about the same.

I didn't touch the airflow sliders after the honeycombs were taking out. I have a regular 3" GM MAF with 1 "SET" of honeycombs.

Tim, for lack of time and energy (and me be lazy), will you elaborate on your turbo setup so I don't have to filter back through 17 pages of data?

Thanks! :rocks:

The hybrid is looking like it could be alot of fun. However I will likely be running the 38mm internal gate until I finish my motor project. I'd like to make a solid 400awhp on 93 on the stock 7 bolt. (Possibly SMIM and I have a set of BC 272s ready to drop in...)

From my profile...

Bolt-on Modifications
GM MAF & Translator, T-3 Holset HX-35, Kinetic FMIC kit, n/t large t-body, HKS Genuine 272s, tredstone T-3 cast exhaust manifold, custom downpipe, hardened motor mounts, EPROM + DSMLink, Walbro 255LPH fuel pump, Stewert Warner boost/fuel pressure gauges, AEM wideband, battery relocation... etc.

Engine Internals
ARP head, rod and main studs. Mitsu 4 layer headgasket. Ross pistons. Eagle rods.

Awesome. I'll probably go with the hybrid and a Bullseye housing. What is DSMLink estimating your hp/trq at?

441HP according to DSMLink but the real dyno will tell all once I get a way better base tune and then tune it on the rollers for a final tune.

Its funny now I am trying to recall what I did (built it almost 2 years ago). I belive that I just went .020 over. I will have to dig out my ROSS box just to verify.

How can I tell the size of this turbine housing ,I bought it from Josh at GRE performance (HX40/35)?

And is the final conclusion,it's best to get a 12cm turbine housing in order for this thing to outflow a 60-1? This has a Garrett flange for my T/4T/3 exh mani by turbonetics.

Finally, can I conclude that I'll reach my goal of 550whp with this turbo? I have a built 2.0L motor waiting to go in and I have all supporting mods to reach my goal.

It's all speculation. It's better to say 'assumption' rather than 'conclusion'. This is truely bench racing, but some speculation needs to be mentioned because we're dealing w/ a little known, but goal-dependent, component of your 550 hp goal. As I mentioned, there are 3 known hx40 compressor wheels and there are 3 known hx40 compressor maps. The 8 blade flows the least based on the word of ALL diesel shops. The compressor map demonstrating the least flow comes quite short of your goal. It can be logically assumed that your 8-blade compresor probably won't do what you need. It will do well, but probably not enough to guarantee 550whp w/ proper fuel, tune, and support.

But, based on turbine blade shape and turbine major and exducer diameters, it seams likely that you can reach your goal in the 12 cm^2 turbine housing w/ the hx35 turbine wheel you have. It CAN be proven that the 12cm^2 turbine housing doesn't lag all to bad even without utilizing it's twin-scroll design. Considering your goal, you've obviously put lag on the back burner, so you should at least have fun w/ this turbo. And who knows. . . you could be the one to prove what the 8-blade can REALLY do. . .

Well yes and no. 12cm is pretty damn huge I've been thinking. Why would that turbine housing possibly guarantee me reaching my goal with this turbo? I'm sure u gave the reason earlier but I cannot remember. Also, the fact that I have an 8 turbine blade after reading the posts is kinda discouraging too.
Sorta of feel like going with another non-ball bearing type of turbo or is there another Holset setup that might work better than this one as far as my whp goals are concerned?

It's the BEP housing, which is listed as a .55AR. It's identical to their bolt-on housing, just cast with a T3 inlet. If you're interested in a divided T3 housing for the HX35 turbine wheel, PM me.

Do you plan on running the turbine housing pictured? I thought that you were asking about holset housing sizes to know which one to buy and to verify it. . . yea that is a BEP housing.

Why do you say that a 12 cm^2 *holset* housing is big? You can't compare turbine housing numbers from one brand to another. . . A garrette t4 .68 housing si only slightly smaller in outside dimensions as a 17 cm^2 holset turbine housing. . . The 12 cm^2 turbine housing s likely properly sized to the turbine it holds. Diesel or gas.

Steve what would be the advantage to using the divided T3 housing? Also I'm still wondering why using a 12cm turbine would help this turbo I have? I know you and Carl have built a monster with the Holset. I was hoping to have the same kinda results with this setup, but I guess not.
:toobad:

OK gotcha on the turine hsing differences based on manufacturer. Did not know that.

! I guess the bottom line was if I was able to make my HP #'s(550whp with out crazee lag but reasonable lag) with this turbo the way it is. Give me a final recommendation and I will highly consider it. Thanks.

I'd push the 8blade and see what it will do. . . I'd get the 12 cm^2 turbine housing and go for it. . . All this is speculation.
OK then 12cm it is.

Steve is that the one you were talking about with the split in the middle?

How about a T3 .70a/r turbine housings with a 3" v-band outlet for a holset?? I found some for $220 each. I will see if I can get some pics.

That should free up these turbos over the .55 a/r BEP that have been used for a few years.

Yep please show some pics, would love to see them.:thumb: Did not know that the housing I now have was a bottleneck for this turbo. I will also take monsters advice and give this thing a shot.

Considering that Carl made 516whp without dropping off up to 8k on a stupidly conservative timing curve, I'd say he easily had 550+whp in it on the bolt-on housing. A bigger housing will basically trade spool up for top end, so choose where you want your powerband. It can't hurt to run what you have since you've already got it, can always swap it out later.

Wow, with the bolt on? Nice #'s. This was with the hybrid setup like mines or a HX40?

Guess i could try to use wht I have but I am tempted to see wht the 70cm housing will do.

Was he running an hx35/40 or an hx40? My t3 stage1 turbine in my .63 a/r turbine housing found stock in my t-bird TC will flow nothing like a t3 stage5 in the IDENTICAL turbine housing. However, the t-bird TC turbin and housing is much better than the SVO mustang's t3 stage one turbine w/ the .48 a/r houing. You can't qualify a turbine housing's flow w/ out mentioning what turbine it's going to spin.

All I can say is the HX-40 is worth every cent. With the rights mods and engine internals this turbo with unleash with little lag. And it make no difference if someone else has less lag, when this turbo hit fully spool you will catch up and smoke then right there.
