hey guys, just bought a hx40. have a couple questions. in these pictures, there are some weird notches, any reason why these might be here? balancing purposes? and wheres a good place to buy a rebuild kit for it? and possibly a new compressor wheel?

I am and it was nothing but a pain to make things work. The biggest issue was the front motor mount being in the way of the oil return. I had to do lots of cutting and welding to get the job done right. The primary reason i stuck it out is because i had a dnp tubular manifold with an external 38mm tial wastegate that routes back into a dnp tubular o2 housing. I didnt want to use an external wastegate and vent to atmosphere. If you plan on running a mitsu flanged dnp header with an hx40 i advise against it. If i could do things over again i would buy a fp cast manifold and some sort of an o2 housing that allows for an external 38mm wastegate to be bolted in.

Well after months of planning, buying, piecing together and bending a shaft i finally have a working holset on my car. I have the 8 blade hx35 in bep housing running external gate off of a 2g manifold, stock motor with arps and a cometic, stock head, cams etc. Running 20 psi off the gate right now. I stripped one of the bolt holes in my bep housing so i have a small exhaust leak pre-turbo which is hurting my spoolup, but im still seeing full boost by around 3800-4200 rpm . This turbo is awesome it sounds completely different, even my tial bov sounds better ill have some pics up after i get my tuning sorted out(jackal speed density) and clean my bay up.

If anyone is wondering you can order the hx40 new in the bolt on housing from three different places right now.

Pure-tuning sells the hx40 pro 6 blade in the bolt-on housing for $1200 shipped.
If you call Bullseyepower.com they will also sell you the same hx40 pro in the bolt on housing for $1250
timsturbos.com prefers to sell you an 8blade hx40 in the bolt on housing. I'm not sure of their price because nobody called me back.
importperformanceparts.net no longer sells an hx40 turbo.

I have the front balance shaft in place with no belt, and the rear balance shaft has been eliminated. My current turbo is sold so I won't have a chance to measure my oil pressure before bolting this on. My bottom end is completely stock with 155k on it. I plan on feeding the turbo from the OFH. Should I run a very small restrictor, or nothing at all? Any help would be appreciated because I don't want to hurt my investment and I have no idea what my oil pressure is. Thank you!

Feeding it too much pressure with no load while the motor warms up is fine. And even freerevving in your driveway is fine. Because there is no load, the shaft speed will be miniscule. You don't need to drive around town to see your oil pressure. It is purely rpm based. So revving it in neautral in your driveway will give you all you need to see the pressure.

I decided to remove the water line that goes from thermostat housing to oil cooler and capped the ends with some bolts but I left the line that goes from the water pipe to the oil cooler. Is this ok? It seems like there will be coolant in the oil cooler but it won't be moving since the other end is plugged. I decided not to remove the line from the water pipe because I already have everything on and bolted and there is very little to no room.
What do you guys think?

Yes all the hx40s spool in about the same range. Within 200rpms of each other, based on my experience and all the logs I've seen (map sensor logs).

Why is this hard to believe? The only difference is the minor diameter of the compressor and one extra blade. The turbine wheel weights FAR more than the compressor. The hotside predominantly determines the spool of the turbo (wheel design/size and housing a/r).



doesitonall4rs. . .Either here or the link forums (I think here), there is a person who has got some great flow out of the 6blade hx40; in the range of the 8blade compressor map actually. Along with a GREAT 70-90 time. Seamed to spool faster than all the other hx40s. It was in the t3 bep housing but spool speed was slightly faster than I've seen other t3 setups accomplish. So I would be happy with it. I cannot remember where the log is though. . . I'll keep looking.

That may possibly be me. I was running a 56mm 6 blade billet and was seeing 36psi by 4700-4800 RPMs. I was also averaging about 1.35 70-90 times with said boost level. This was on a BEP t3 .70 housing. I can post a couple logs if you'd like.

It runs and moves !!! I got the car to fire up and after the cams were broken in I quick took it out of the driveway and drove it about 200 ft to my neighbors driveway and then back to my house. I let it idle for about an hour. I have to connect ALL my vacuum lines yet and fix a few boost leaks and hook up my wastegate and boost controller. I just locked dsmlink in open loop mode to take it out of my driveway as the car barely idles very rich!!! So far I can post it hit about 10psi by 5k at 3/4 throttle in first gear. Now that i got al the hyperness and excitement out of my system i'll be able to park the car and fix all the little odds and ends. I'll keep everyone posted.

Dave did a little tuning with Q16 tonight.

When he ran the 10.91 and 10.86 passes he was on VP110, 28-30psi, and only 10 degrees of timing advance (any more timing seemed to give him spark blowout issues). The HX40 was moving around 56-57lb/min.

Tonight he bumped the boost up to 33-34psi, timing is 18* across the board (near stock; would be fatal with pump gas at his compression ratio), and is moving 64lb/min of airflow! What's crazy is the HX40 map stays alive until 68-70lb/min, so there is still room to grow with more boost.


Putting his previous best MPH run and best 60ft run together with under 30psi of boost and 10* of advance netted him a 10.58...tomorrow night should be quite interesting.

Kenny (Kp116) is finished with his car. He's working on some clean runs. Kept up with a busa fairly well though . . . Certainly can beat his previous 10.9 by a significant margin. He's running the bolton housing. So he may break before he makes.

At 14.5 ambient pressure (inlet), the hx40 map is farthest at the right at 33psi. That area should definately be his target; getting flow up in other areas if at all possible first (but he already has a healthy turbine housing). Or, you could just do the badman21 strategy: boost the he!! out of it

We're actually thinking we can make a HX35 run a high 10 at this point, and it may happen after the Shootout. We know where the HX35 that Dave used last year is, and it would literally be a direct swap to put the 35 back on the car....about a half hour's worth of work.

A HX35 at 33-34psi should make as much airflow as a HX40 at 27-28psi, but of course you're limited to the amount of total airflow you can make with the HX35.

I see a HX35 running a 10 by the end of the year.

Hey guys this is kind of crazy, but let me know what you think.

Right now my car is at 30psi on an 8blade hx35 in bolton housing (780s, link, 650cc/min meth nozzle). The other day we were at a car meet and my one friend keeps talking my car up like its something fast. Anyways long story short he sets me up with a run with this evo that is making 520 to the wheels at 27psi with meth and an FP Red. My friend keeps telling me he thinks my car has close to 500 to the wheels, I think its bullshit, DSM link was estimating like 415 or something. Plus I think my car is making around 420awhp hopefully. But in an effort to prove my friend wrong I said I'll run the evo.

My friend is all like "dude I told you your making around 500" I'll admit my car does run pretty damn well, but I really don't think hx35s can make around 500 to the wheels. What do you guys think? I personally think the evo owner was bullshitting about how much power he is making.

I really want to run my car at the track, but have been to lazy to pull the trans out and buy a clutch for it. My XTD stage 4 has about 20,000 miles on it and starts to slip really bad on the 2step, like I'm spinning tires but then you can smell the clutch smell of death. I have been debating on whether to buy a ACT 6 puck non sprung disk or replace the XTD PP with an ACT 2900. I really want a twin disk but I can't justify spending that much on the clutch and daily driving my car and putting wear and tear on a 1000+ dollar clutch.

But that guy is at 35 psi dropping to 31, and he is on a t3 7blade hx35 which flows more not to mention is is running WAY more aggressive timing than I am. My 8blade is almost maxed out (I am at 50lb/min).

Anybody ever have one of the bolts holding the chra into the bep housing back out? well i did and i lost one of the metal washer thingys this sucks, everything is still together and nothing is contacting the housing. I have the stock washers that hold it in the stock housing but its only 2 bolts, can i use this for now?
