I drove a friends 1g yesterday with an hx-35 internally gated like mine, mitsu bolt on housing, stock intake mani, all stock internals, FMIC and supporting mods..oh and nitrous. I drove it and it took until a little before redline to get that thing to spool up. It sucked driving. He said that with nitrous, it's a whole new ballgame, which is understandable. But I couldn't believe how much lag there was on that compared to my car with the h1e.
That just doesn't sound right.

My plans were to make a tubular undivided t3 manifold, but i have been toying with the idea of making a divided manifold. I hesitate to build a divided t3 manifold because I'm not sure the WH1C will make the power i want.

Just finished mine, not as easy as I thought it would be. After final welding took it to a local machine shop to have the flange flatened and they shaved about a half inch off.:notgood: So I'm going to weld another flange on and bolt it down this time to keep it flat. Had everything glass beaded to which turned out good, painting it with high temp 2000 deg ceramic paint lastly. I don't know if it was worth all the trouble, maybe should have just bought a manifold. Had to relocate alot of shit to make it work and still have to fab up a down pipe.

And??? Should i be worried?

No. Kraka said that your reply 'wasn't the answer he was looking for'. . . I'm saying that the spool speed or torque curve may suprise him. You'll just have to run it and tell us.

Maglin's spooled to 32 psi by 3800rpms!!! Several others reported at least as fast a spool. So it's at least plausable there's an issue. Boost leak, preturbo exhaust leak, wastegate issue, bigger than 272 cams, or cam timing issues. Or his tune could even have an impact on spool. Considering the h1c turbine wheel is practically identical to the hx35, I consider your setup and my setup proof enough that his has an issue.

That's exactly what I said. I thought mabye the turbo is taking a crap on him, but I pulled off the intake pipe and the compressor wheel was fine. I said mabye boost leak, but his vacuum is around 20inhg at idle. i thought wastegate issue or mabye an exhaust mani leak. His car sat all winter and the manifold is all rusted over now. Im looking into it more tommorow.

A new member/lurker: View Profile: andy4g63 - DSMtuners.com. He is now running the .70 a/r H1E (similar to the hx40) with 280s, ERL cast exhaust mani, JMF intake manifold, with 9:1 pistons. He's PMed me stating "full boost 22psi @ around 5K, it pulls bad ass. It seems like I can use a little more RPM, but since I use BC single spring I will stick with my current 8100 RPM. The top end it is extremely more noticable." He's running 11-11.5:1. Timing 17 is degrees up top. Personally, I expect this from the large BEP housing with the hx40-style turbine wheel. This h1e has been modified with an 8 blade 60mm compressor wheel. A bit more mass than a 6 blade 60mm wheel.

Back with the mitsu flanged .55 a/r bep housing, FP race mani and otherwise the same setup, he was seeing "full boost/22-23psi/roughly around 4400-4500rpm". Slightly laggy for what other hx40 guys have been reporting for the small bep housing. But I havn't seen any results with 280s, which would definately be the cause of that spool speed difference. So, to me, I can see the hx40 in the large bep housing spool to 20+psi in the mid-4K range of with 272s and the rest of GORBS88's mods. Can't wait to find out!

Do you think you could post up or pm me some picks of how you ran your downpipe. Also witch holset housing do you have. I have the 12cm2 internal wastegate housing and am think in I might have a clearance issue if I run the downpipe off of the v-band. I also don't have the resorces to make a custom flange like TimG did. But if worse comes to worse I will just pick up a holset 12cm2 "short" non-wastegated housing. I want to stick with the holset because of the manifold I just picked up it a divided t3.

I got the turbo and manny all mounted up now, the turbo sits up higher and more forward towards the rad. So i changed out my (crushed) water line with a new one and the turbo clears it by just over half an inch.( this is with DNP manifold)
All i have left is to make the down pipe, theres not to much room there as its real close to the ALT and oil filter. Once i get to the shop and can use the welder i will button it up.
In the next 2-3 days i should have some spool times. Im hoping for 20 psi by around 4400, since it was around 4k with the .55 housing.

Hi,everyone. I just wanted to say hello, because up until now I was a new member, but not new to DSM's.Got mine back in 1999.
I've been following the Holset turbos tread long time ago and actually I was one of the very first people to buy Holset from BEP, the first time they came out. Very soon I will post my mods and a few pictures. I have everything in my profile, but from my personal experience/lazyness/, it easier to read here, than to go and check someone's profile. Thanks for yor time.

I posted up some pics here, the downpipe is a universal 3" shorty from ATP Turbo. Everything clears for me, with this manifold, but thats only because I'm running only the downpipe right now, it'd take some fabrication to get it to clear my IC piping as well as the oil filter. I'm planning on relocating the filter though, and the alternator has held up fine thus far so I may not relocate it with the JayRacing kit until this one craps out.

My turbine housing was internally wastegated, I'm not sure which one it actually is though, searching the numbers on it turned up nothing. The only thing I would do differently if I did it over again would be to grind the stock v-band flange off of the 5-bolt plate before welding the ATP v-band flange to it, it'd give a little bit more clearance with the alternator. Be weary that whatever downpipe you use probably won't match up to the Holset v-band, it seems to be their own type and did not match a standard 3" v-band flange from ATP.

I have a new modded, lightly ported divided external gated 14cm^2 Holset turbine hsing I wanna sell if anyone is interested. pm me and let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks Spidey. One more question though what did you do to the ATP starter downpipe to get it to fit with the holset v-band flange if it is different. Also the holset non-wategated "short" housing are alittle over an inch shorter from what I have read into about it.

I had a v-band flange from ATP that matched the downpipe welded right to the Holset v-band flange. I'm going to make what I have work for the time being, I'd really like to hit the dyno and track soon to see what it'll do aside from spinning 3rd gear, I threw in an ACT unsprung 6-puck like a week ago after a street disc took a shit so thats just another thing I'll have to adjust to. I also got my HKS 272s in, need to boost leak test and get some more tuning in though.

Just for reference, I said it wasn't the answer I was looking for because I was hoping he would say it was for sale ;)

I still haven't dynoed the car. I had to get a VCE from TRE which was a cinch because Jon really takes care of his customers, especially returning ones.

Noone sells Redline Gear Oil locally so I'm waiting on Jegs to get my 3qts to me. Mitsubishi Diaqueen is over $100 for a gallon! 3qts of Redline 90wt cost me $30 shipped.

Oh, we're over that now:p

I was just wondering if you had the car dynoed, J. I'm still down. My 4-wheeler blew up too. Decided to rebuild that first. And add a goody or two. It's cheaper to mod.

Gixrman, I like the manifold. I'm drawing up a manifold that I can use with the mitsu flange now. And then cut the collector off and weld a t3 flange. Or build it with the t3 flange now and buy an adapter plate. I want to run the stock h1c 18cm^2 housing. So far my drawing looks very similar to your except for the attempt to get the runners equal in length.

I'm looking at this afternoon or Monday for some dyno time. My tuner is running his GT42R 1G at the Import Showdown in ATL this weekend. I was looking forward to going with him but I've got a final tomorrow morning.

I'm debating keeping the power under 400hp just as to not worry about a high speed disassembly of the bottom end in the near to immediate future.

Any recommendations on what to shoot for?

That is great, but you can post it in the classifieds...

Or maybe you could leave the pictures up for reference purposes since this is the Holset thread. But I'm sure you know best. :notgood: Being as Matt is part of the Holset Mafia, if he felt it needed to be removed and/or edited he would've done so. Go flex your nuts elsewhere. :boring:

Anyways, played around with the MAFT and DSMLink today. Still not sure I have the translator set right. Got the WB02 installed gonna try to dial the MAF in Monday and get some numbers.

Well got it all mounted and running today, took awhile but i was trying to get the DP to fit just right. I have one full inch from the ALT and 3/4 to the stock BIG filter.
Also the compressor housing has just over 1/2 to the stock (uncrushed) water line.

Mike, that looks great! What EWG setup are you running? Any video action? ;) Hows the spool on the T3 housing?

EDIT: I see you're running a 44mm off of the manifold. I need a 02 mounted setup. Would a 38mm gate be too small for an HX40?

Im not to sure about the 38mm if it will be big enough, in my case i think it would be cause i generally never run less then 25psi. If you were trying to run low boost it might be an issue but i doubt it.
I will have some spool times tomorow, the DP isnt wrapped yet so i dont want to make to much heat in there until then.
