I had the same housing on my h1e it was damn huge but it had a bigger flange, it was a t4 flange for sure. I searched all the holset threads but couldn't find an answer. I know Tim G is using a threadstone mani, but someone in my area is selling a turbonetics t3 thats why I'm asking.

I'm also using a spacer between my head and manifold along with longer manifold studs. It barely fits (I can fit 2 sheets of paper between my turbine housing and block. I can't fit 3 sheets. It's that tight.) You have a bigger housing. It probably wont fit.
 
Dude what's taking you so long to switch the turbine housings? get rid of that Bp hosing and put on the 18.5 cm housing,pleez!:G

The bep housing spools SO fast. And I'm now knocking on the door of 40 lbs/min with pump gas. No water injection yet :p. I wanted to wait to get some more logs before spilling the beans. Considering the spool speed and ease of install, the bep housing is the BEST option. Now I will be comparing the two housings. I'm fabbing up a t4 divided runner manifold. I will be using an MHI adapter for this housing first, then switch to a divided t3 adapter and housing. Then swap on my new h1e. I might use my h1e conpressor on the h1c in the interim to further compare.

dsmmike50t, your scroll shape looks MUCH smaller than mine. But TimG is running a 12cm^2 housing. . . The smallest divided housing holset puts on the h1c/hx35s
 
Well guys I have some bad news.( at least for me) I got to play with my turbo today and it just dosent work right. I had a hard time getting the exhaust housing off. When I did get the thing off the turbo didnt spin freely anymore. It just has a bind in it now. The (ring) behind the exhaust wheel spins with the when I turn the shaft. I dont think it is supposed to do that. So it looks like my holset project will be on hold until I am done with this deployment. I have to go back to Iraq on the 1st.

On a positive note... I bought both the 3 inch and 2.5 inch vband flanges from ExtremePSI and the 2.5 fits the stock holset exhaust flange perfect. I took some pics and will post tomorrow.

Oh. I'm sorry. I should have warned you and everyone else. Jeremiah (Maglin) mentioned this too in the 2nd holset thread. Removing the holset turbine housing is very difficult. I had to break out the prybar. I can see how one could easily/accidentally bend the shaft. Are you sure there's no grit or muck behind the "ring" causing it to remain too close to the turbine wheel? I remember with my h1c the clearance there is very thin.
 
Does anyone know if the erl t3 manifold clears the block with a 14, 16 or 18cm2 housing. Link below.

Ihave an ERL mani and BEP 0.70 AR turbine housing. It clears pretty good with that. I have no idea what is the size difference between BEP housing and HOLSET housings in 14, 16, 18 cm2. But I will measure tomorrow and probably put some pictures.
 
Yeah..... I guess it was just some gunk behind that round plate that made it spin bad. But now I broke the snap ring on the exhaust side bering. Holset is on hold until I get back for good from Iraq. :-
 
330HP @ 24psi, less than 1 degree of knock with 11.8:1 A/F. I'm tuning for 27psi tomorrow. FWIW, this is all in 90+ degree heat.

Motor:
Stock 7 bolt long bolt + ARPs
Stock TB
Stock IM

Numbers seem a bit low to me. This was with leaky injector seals. Picked up a set from Mitsu today. I'm gonna switch my focus to building my stroker after I get the dyno bill paid off. ;)

I'll post up my logs on the link forum towards the end of the week.
 
Good call. I am doing my install next weekend. I plan to use a 2.5in 90 degree silicone coupler off the turbo. I am sure that is what most people do.

I planed to do that also but I cant get a 2.5in coupler to fit of the the turbo compressior outlet. So what is everyone doing about this?
 
You can shave the VBand portion off and use the coupler or go vband. I have a spare 2.5" Vband fitting if you can find a clamp. I bought the kit from extremepsi, but only needed one fitting.

My friend used a coupler but it blew off alot so I opted for vband.

At 24psi that's very low.:confused:

With my T3/T4 60 trim I got 413whp on pump gas at 21psi.

I finished today. I left it at 24psi. I made 343.8hp/300trq. The temperature was 86* and 32% humidity. My timing is relatively low. I'll post up a graph and log before the weekend.

This is with a recirculated 02 housing and the pulls were made on a Dynojet.
 
Does your BEP internal gate stay closed to redline? Your hx40 has the small bep turbine housing correct? Which compressor wheel?

No, it opens at the set boost level. I had it holding 17 psi to redline before we tuned for 24. Its the 6blade HX40 in the .55 BEP housing.

Full spools was ~4400 rpms, IIRC. I'm too busy to post anything up yet. I'm off Friday so I'll post up all pertinent info then.
 
I just picked up another 89 colt, what do you guys think of running an 8 blade h1e w/.55 housing on the 1.6?
 
Well, if the spool is too slow for your taste, then swapping in a 63 motor is not that hard.

I don't know much about the 61, but if the rev limit is raised and the tranny can hold up, then I don't see why it wouldn't do well especially in the small BEP housing.

I'd run no bigger than a 12cm turbine housing with an UN-divided runner t3 o t4 exhaust manifold. No one's really run a divided runner manifold with a holset housing around here yet. . .

I will say that there is one who eeked out 600whp with a small BEP housing hx40 6blade. You'll have to look it up, but it was mentioned in the second thread.

We need a Holset tech article and then a wiki that can be added to as new information comes along. . . I'd be interested in compiling it. Is anyone willing to give any informative links or other relative information about holsets? PM me. I think I have enough reputable information to start a wiki article.

From my experience, I had a BEP bolt on and switched to T3 0.70 AR housing/I dont know if that is closer to 12 cm2, or 14cm2 Holset housings/. My motor is 2 liter. Insome ways I miss the old housing. The turbo was hitting much harder before that now with the bigger housing. Right now definitely makes a lot more power, but is more radiant, even though is pulling extremely hard to redline. If your foot is not allways 100% on the throttle, it is a little laggy. I see you are building a stroker, so this might help, but then you can't rev it that much, can't really use that big housing where it matters MOST from 8 -10 K. But everythung this is just my opinion.
BTW, yesterday I read on evo forums for that new turbo GT 850R with a billet comp. wheel and so on, but my point is the guys from AMS, especially Martin said that most of the times they use 0.63, instead of 0.82 turbine housings and they are very efficient/FLOW/ and there is really not that big of a difference even up top. The 0.63 flow really well and help spool-up a lot, the rest is your call.

Gorbs has a HX40 Pro housing for sale, IIRC.

I just found out I have a few pin holes in my fuel sending unit right where the feed line comes out of the fuel sending unit.

Could this effect fuel trims?
 
Fuel sending unit? Pump, fuel pressure regulator, fuel rail? If the leak is big enough, the fuel pressure regulator may not be able to keep up at idle and mid ranges. I've tested it with a fuel pressure gauge. I released the vent valve while the engine was running and the fuel pressure would plummet.

J, where's the logs :)!?? I want to see your timing curve?

. . .Yea. I like the small bep housing for 500whp or less, either hx40 or hx35. Then again, I havn't ran a divided runner manifold and a holset housing yet. Theturbotrader.com had a shipment of small bep housings come in. . . Perhaps they have an hx40 housing. Their price is good vs. buying a t3 or t4 manifold and turbine outlet hardware to tie into the exhaust. I STRONGLY recommend an external gate for any holset. The h1c, hx35, hy35, h1e, hx40 all definately merit one.

There were other vendors. You'll have to google it. We need more holset users. BEP can make one for you themselves. I don't know how they handle small orders. Here's the list of dealers from their website. Tim's Turbo stands out. SS stays pretty for longer. I wish I had a SS housing.
