9!'clipseDOHC's 1g DSM build

I bought this car in 2003 and have been working on, driving, and racing it ever since.

I got a chordless dremel for my bday so yay me right..ROFL
A dremel will come in handy in all sorts of ways, however for using this perticular tool you will need a high speed drill. The more powerful the drill, the easier the job. I started off drilling with an older, lower end, cordless Craftsman drill and it took forever. For Christmas I got a nice Craftsman Professional corded drill and its a piece of cake with that baby.

Or maybe since the rest of his interior is currently white?
Ding, ding. We have a winner! I'm painting the interior white because the rest of car is white. Call me old fashioned. :D

Yup, and it seems he has most types of racing listed in the thread title...except rally :p
Although I would love to try it with my EVO! :D The closest Rallycross I have found is in Tucson, AZ so about 5 hours away.

I actually have a 19v chordless drill. Its pretty sick.SO I can do that. But ifI have to get it welded and grinded, I wonder if the guy doing my allingment has a welder:hmm:
To remove the strut tower brace piece that you are talking about there was no welding required. Just drill out the spot welds and its out. I did grind it and sand it just to make it all smooth afterwards.

Hey Nate,

Do you have any pics of what you did for the Lexan window in the door? I've had a piece of Lexan since my last DSM that I had to part out to move to a new house, but now that I'm getting ready to finally cut out the doors on this one, just curious if you had pics or how you did everything for the windows!

Brandon

Just spent like two hours reading this entire build thread. Great work and amazing progress since the beginning. Definetly boosts the ambition to finish mine as well as others im sure. Congrats on the "Soon to be new family member" as well.

Keep up the awesome progress. Sub'd for sure!

Sure thing Brandon! I was a little nervious before I did it but I was surprised at how easy it was to make. I will post a step by step write up with pictures when I make the driver's side window, hopefully on Thursday.

Thanks so much man! You never realize how big the project is when you are doing it, it's just a series of small projects done over time. This car is a journey for me in and of itself!

With the doors gutted, the Lexan windows in, and 80 pounds dropped, I was ready to clean up that jagged, gapping hole in each of my doors. I was originally planning on using aluminum sheet metal and riveting it in place like everyone else does. However, in the midst of my brain storm I came up with an idea. What about something lighter, cheaper, and better looking then sheet metal? I think I found it.

Here are some pictures of sheet metal door panels.

First off I would like to point out that I got the idea for using the red straps as interior door pulls from Jose (ArcticTsi). He had the idea to model it after the Porsche GT3 RS. I don't know if he ever actually put his idea into place or not on his Talon, but I'd like to give the credit for the idea to him.

Here are the parts I used along with the prices:
2' of 1" thick red nylon webbing - $7 shipped from REI
Heavy Duty red thread - $2 from Hobby Lobby
1/8" x 1/2" x 48" flat steel - $4 from Home Depot
72" x 36" corrugated plastic sheet - $11 from Home Depot
2 yards of black suede fabric - $12 from Joanne's Fabric
I already had the screws and 3M general trim adhesive. So there you go, I spent a total of $36 and it weighs practically nothing, maybe a pound or two on each side. Now the only question is does it look better then the sheet metal?

The hardware I used for the mechanical door lock and nylon door pull.

Installing the Door Pull.

Close up of the lock.

Door 6.jpg

Painting the inside of the door.

Door 7.jpg

Tracing out the door panels onto the corrugated plastic. I made a template by tracing out the opening onto clear plastic.

Door 8.jpg

Test fitting and cutting the opening for the door pull.

Door 9.jpg

I also welded in a support brace, right where my elbow will be when I pull the door release so I can just push it open with my elbow.

Door 10.jpg

Cutting out the suede to cover the panels.

Door 11.jpg

Glueing the suede onto the panels with 3M general trim adhesive. It's the same stuff you use for headliners.

Putting the panel into place.

All done!!! What do you think?

I also figured I'd toss this one in to. I managed to squeeze some time in to wash the Evo too. Beauty up front with The Beast in the background.

Haha well we both have a couple things in common. We are both building and running 14b cars, and we both have evos for dailies.

I love the way your doors turned out. You should pull the doors and weigh them.

And you just had a baby and my wife is 4.5 months pregnant :thumb:

Thanks! Me too!!! That is a good idea, I will do that (Just not tonight though, I worked midnights last night and have been up all day... I'm about to crash).

I'd be curious just for comparison sake on the weight. But then again I don't have mirrors so a bit lighter there.

Ya 7 weeks ago today. What a great thing. Congrats to you!!!

Oh and there are a few huge differences between our evos ;)

Nate, thanks for having such great creative ideas. Never would have thought to use those materials. Looks excellent. Once again, I might have to borrow these ideas. I'm sure they won't turn out quite as clean, but still cleaner than the sheet metal door skin...and as you mentioned, lighter too!

Wow. Those doors are amazing. This car is the inspiration for my latest project. I would love to do this to my doors if it wasn't going to be street driven.

Feel free to use it! I know it's going to be a race car but I still want it to look nice and a little suede never hurt anyone, LOL.

Thanks man! That was one of the reasons I decided to pull her from Autox and street duty, so I could do whatever I wanted without having to worry about classes or safety or comfort on the street.

Awesome job Nate! Clean and light! As with the others I might be stealing/borrowing some of these ideas!
Thanks Shane! Again feel free to use it! It I didn't want to share with the community I wouldn't have posted it online!

Ya know, I suppose if a guy were to leave the internal bracing in the door he might still be able to get away with this. Although, I'd like to keep the windows able to roll up and down for now as well. I planned on getting rid of the electric windows for some cranks.

It could be done and you could lose a little bit of weight. However the actual crash bar is the majority of the weight in the door. Plus the more stuff you leave in the door the more complicated it would be making the cover and the amount of work probably wouldn't be worth the amount of weight loss for a street car.

On the eclipse you should wire in a kill switch for the wipers that way you can flip it then use the wipers in the rain as I seen them on a lot in the vid. LOL But if your gonna make it a strictly drag car then I guess the wipers will be on there way out soon. LOL And at the very end of the vid isnt it supposed to say LIVE life? Instead of life life? Cool vid tho :thumb:
