The MD726235 input shaft bearing (Koyo 26118YR1 & 26283N) appears to be gone worldwide, and I can’t find any alternatives to it. Does anyone have any lifesaving tips, or is this just another dagger into the DSM?

I saw things like that, but I’m trying not to make it the most expensive bearing ever 😂

Jack’s had one in stock that I purchased, thank goodness. Thank you team.

There's a timken that works. I'm using it in my dogbox
I did a general search on dimensions and came up blank. That Timken is going to be very important if Koyo doesn’t resume production, it wouldn’t hurt to find it if it’s available.

I wrote to Koyo a while back about it, the response came in this morning. FYI.

Yep, basically it would be easier to restore a mid-60s British Leyland convertible than keep these things going.
Everyone better brush up on their cockney.

Guys, quit panicking. I'll find the timken part when I get a chance to look through my stuff. As for the rest of them, about the only other bearing I see fail regularly is the clutch end intermediate shaft bearing. The rest of them seem to last forever. If you make any power at all, the bearings far outlive the gearsets, and there are only so many gearsets left anyway....

If they do all dissapear, we will just have to find another way. Either make the trans take a more standard bearing, or else make a standard bearing fit.

Piece by piece isn’t daunting, but bearings and synchros discontinuing at the supplier level within a few weeks of each other is a sign that Mitsubishi may have dropped support entirely for a specific sector or chassis. The American support base for USDM cars is very strong to keep these cars on the road, but a lot of the non-USDM cars don’t have enough community organization to find solutions, we need Mitsubishi to keep going or it will put us in difficult spots. It’s naive, but I don’t want to see anything going NLA.

With respect to the transmission, bearings are the least of our worries and will not be the thing that finally kills the platform.
So what will? The thing that sticks in my mind is people restoring old things from the 60s, 70s etc. Not muscle cars but like obscure things like a 70s snowmobile. How? Communities like this?

I've been working with a classic Mini for the last year and it is downright amazing what is available for much older cars. Trim pieces, body panels, bearings, is all available in either UK original or improved Japanese version (for interior trim pieces, ball joints, custom wheels). Its because of the community of enthusiasts from all over the world that we can get so many parts, so easily.

I hope our DSM platform stays alive! Perhaps we need to work with other Mitsubishi communities that share some common platform parts?

Lack of availability of replacement gear sets, synchros, etc.
It's going to become Mad Max soon, except instead of gasoline we'll be fighting over third gear.
Many of us don't have a spare trans sitting in their garage nor are they easy to come by at all. If mine goes, or the transfer case, or the differential, that basically spells doom because I don't need a two ton paperweight taking up half my garage and making me depressed while I spend years waiting for someone else to part out theirs for ridiculous prices.
The state of it all makes me sad.
Add to that Mitsu decided to change so many things over the years needlessly, even by just a tiny bit, now causes parts availability for certain years even more difficult and it's supremely infuriating. I hate to say this but Subaru and Honda did a lot of things right with parts interchangeability. Mitsu royally screwed the pooch.

Don't get me wrong, I love my car, it was a dream for 20 years to finally own a 2Gb, but i just don't want to watch a loved one slowly die because nobody (that can actually do something about it) cares.

Gears, hub/sleeve, forks, rails, those are what will dry up to nothing anywhere, not even good used.
We'll have to stop racing and just driving like grannies in order to preserve these things.

Or just move to a different platform. I was close to considering a N55 135i before I went this way instead.

I have enough trans parts to keep breaking them for another 10 years. After that I’ll start breaking all the auto stuff I have.

Congrats.

This 'flex' is contributing to the problem. How many people who love this platform and want to see this platform kept alive end up getting fked because they can't find parts..
There's going to be 5 people left in this world that will still have these cars in short order and it'll disappear into obscurity. Maybe that's the point.

The people with the hoards are the ones who really love these cars. When these cars were popping up all over in wrecking yards 10 years ago and being parted out dirt cheap we were the ones who went out and spent our hard earned money and time to pull and get these parts knowing we would probably need them in the future. The parts we have today we got because nobody else thought they were worth the time money or effort to get back then. So if there's only 5 of us left in the world that can run them then we deserve to be the ones running them. If it been left up to the people who didn't "hoard" DSM parts there would be even less parts since most of them would have been turned into refrigerator and chandeliers.

Wow. Do not even presume to tell us that we do not really love this platform just because we don't have a hoard of parts because they were easier to come by 10 years ago. I bought mine further back than that and they were incredibly rare even then. I've spent many, many hours in the yards, I just didn't have a plethora to choose from handed on a silver platter to me.
I'd even argue the fact that so many of us that don't have a lifeline or two in the garage, yet still stick with it, could very well love the platform even more because they run that continual risk of being down indefinitely. I'd make that argument if I didn't know it was a fallacy from the beginning because I know there are people who love this platform with all their heart regardless of how many parts they have stashed. That would be a stupid thing to say otherwise.

So saying you don't love the cars wasn't the right way to state that and I shouldn't have started out with saying you don't love your car. I'm sure you do. And you do make a good point about sticking with it even though you don't have any back-up parts and could be down indefinitely.

But my main point was just that most of us who have a lot of extra parts did not get them by screwing the rest of the community out of them. 90% of our part came from cars that were headed to the crusher in short order and we pulled the parts from the vehicle shortly before it was crushed. It is really irritating that people who don't have spare parts are upset at the people out there that saved parts and have them to keep our cars going. If we hadn't gotten the parts we did most of them would have been crushed and melted down. We have not deprived the community of any parts and we aren't obligated to sell what we have.
