9!'clipseDOHC's 1g DSM build

I bought this car in 2003 and have been working on, driving, and racing it ever since.

Very cool!

Next time just back the car onto the trailer and not so far forward, then you won't be sagging so bad. ;)

To be honest I kind of lost interest in having a dedicated drag racing car.

Ditto on this.

Too many other cool things out there to do in a car.

Nice work on this and congrats on the WIN!

Congrats on the first place nice... Damm that's some sag on the montero what about just using a tow dolly
Thanks man! I wanted a tow dolly but Uhaul would not rent one to me becuase they said the eclipse was too low to the ground. I assured them that due to 800 lbs of weight loss it had off road status and plent of ground clearance. However their policy is that if the computer says its too low, its too low. Nothing else matters. I am in the market for a used tow dolly though, hoping to find one before the next event.

Good job Nate!! Way to keep the DSMs alive out there. Looks like a lot of fun to.
Thanks Justin!! Yeah I got a few comments about how these cars used to be so dominate 10-15 years ago, at least the AWD ones.

Thanks! I turned it around on the way back but it was still sagging. Honestly it was sagging just with the trailer, without the car even on it. The shocks are done. I'll replace those and then the air bags should definitely cure the sag. As far as mounting it further back that wasn't an option, the way the trailer is designed the car had to be all the way forward to mount with the straps.

Ditto on this.

I agree! I still want to drag it, I just don't want that to be the only thing. Thanks Phil!!

It was great seeing you and Becky again Nate, hopefully we'll be able to drive down to at least one more of these before the seasons up. Maybe I'll cover my car in blue painters tape and drive down and see how well I can do too. No dog next time. :D

You missed this one, too bad you were behind the tree when it happened.

It was great seeing you guys as well! I just washed the Eclipse today and it cleanup nice. I didn't see any damage to the paint at all. By the next event I should have some homemade mud flaps. Plus there was that C6 'vette racing. If he could do it I think your GSX would be alright!

Yeah Buddy! I got some air!!

That guy racing his C6 looked like a mouth breather with deep pockets. LOL

I was on the AZRally website and it looks like the last RallyX is in November, I know it's a long ways out but realistically my car SHOULD be back on the road then. :p

Good to hear your car cleaned up. Did you happen to look up inside the wheel wells and the under carriage? That's where I'd think the most dirt would collect.

That's what took the most time! Lol. After the bath my driveway looked like it used to back when I was offroading in my avalanche.

I just ordered some harness pads today because my collar bone is still a little sore today from all the bouncing around.

Great pics, great car, great guy. Rock on.

Thanks Bud!

You guys ready for some RallyX videos?!?

Here is my video put together with my in/on car footage. It basically shows one lap around the course. Thanks again to Corey for loaning me the second GoPro. I still feel a little bad that it was his that got completely covered the in the mud :ohdamn:

And here is the official video of the event. My DSM comes out three times... and they are all epic! :sneaky:

I just spent all day (Back and forth obviously) reading through this thread and this is truly inspiring. Everything is done right and not one thing has gone overlooked. Nice build! :thumb:

Nice video Nate, you cleaned the hell out of the GoPro after you muddied it up so no worries I'm glad you were able to use it.

:dsm:
Thanks! Not a problem, I appreciated it!

Thanks so much!!

You got rid of it with less then a 1000 miles?!?!? Do you still own an Evo?

Missed this.

Yeah, I did. Wasn't a great decision, however, I would have most likely sold it by now anyway. My '05 SSL is gone too. As great as the Evo's are, I disliked it as a daily driver, and the blue was just too 'hey look at me.' So I let it go.

Cool vid too man!

Ahh man, you cleaned the hell out of that thing just to go beat it through the dirt!!

Ah ok. I love my DD Evo but its tarmac black, I know what you mean by the blue by you being too much! Thanks Phil!

It's still just as clean :thumb: honestly it was hardly even dirty under the hood. It gets dirtier sitting in the driveway, LOL. A quick wipe down and it was good to go. the only thing that required some cleaning real was the fender wells. I did go to the junkyard yesterday and picked up the 4 engine bay splash guards. That should help keep it even cleaner for future events.

I decided to make some rear mud flaps today. Since nobody makes any for the 1g's I had to do it the old fashioned way. I found a neat idea on dirtyimprezza.com using a tractor trailer mud flap from NAPA and cutting it into quarters. I got a 24"x36" mud flap, part number 823-5076 for $18.07 after tax. I cut it into quarter using a pair of tin snips and then marked the existing holes for the rear fender liner and drilled them out. I had to use slightly longer bolts along the top and I used nuts and bolts where the plastic fasteners were previously used. I will be adding some large fender washers in the future.

Once I was done I threw on some PIAA stickers just to give them some life. PIAA was always a sponsor of the WRC Evo's so I found then fitting and I had them lying around.

I have the front ones cut out, I will just need to get around to measuring them and getting them bolted up. All in all, not bad for $18 and about an hour.

I got lucky with a car I parted out. It had the factory Mitsubishi ones installed. I somehow lost the fronts but found the rears. Not very long though.

You can use the ikea ones too for even cheaper...haha

My main problem with those longer mud flaps like yours is when you reverse on the hilly stuff you run over your flap and rip it off...

Looks good as always glad your having fun in the dirt

Looks sick! I had the red Ralliart flaps on my EVO and took alot of heat from some on the way they looked. I always loved rally and of course WRC.

Good find! Those are quite rare!!

Thanks man! With Rallyx I don't see the length of the flaps being an issue. I could see that happening on a truck offroading perhaps, but not on a flat Rallyx course.

Thanks Phil! Im happy with how they turned our! Nice! I have the Rally Armor mud flaps on my Evo. Plus I custom fiberglassed a pair of 6" fogs into my front bumper, reminiscent of the old Evo IV's and V's.

I finally got a chance to sit down and watch the video. Good job man! That looks like a ton of fun too!
Thanks Shane! It was and I'm hoping to continue to improve in the coming events.

Glad this build is still going strong :thumb:

RallyX is the best....cool video!!

Thanks!! Are you still rallyxing your n/t? I'm open to any suspension and tire input you may have, there are not a lot of FWD DSM's in the sport from what I've seen.

Well the only update at the moment is that I bought a tow dolly for the eclipse; no more wasting money renting a trailer from Uhaul. Otherwise I'm still hoping to find some used rally tires to go on my 15x6 steelies. The next event is about 3 weeks out.

I used the n/t for two and half rallyx seasons, but I retired it this year and switched to a fwd TSi. I have an awd, but there's just something fun about the fwd to me.

For the amount of abuse the n/t suffered, it held up very well. That includes probably 30 races and thousands of miles of highway driving (I don't have a trailer yet). The biggest thing I had to do was replace the OE shocks which expired by like the third race in the first season. Other than that, normal DSM maintenance was all it needed.

I used Firestone Winterforce tires on the OE wheels initially. They're designed for snow and are made of such soft rubber though. They were ground down to nothing by the end of the first season. Next, I did some 195/65-15 all-seasons. The smaller tire did well in the mud, but similar to the Winterforces, they're not designed for gravel and dirt.
Finally, I tried out a pair of Pirelli K6 gravel tires that one of the local guys had gotten a deal on cos he bought a bunch in bulk (I could only afford two). They were like night and day compared to the snows in terms of control. I tried them on the front and the back. I ended up leaving them up front and having the old snows in the rear, which made for awesome left foot braking turns :) The harder compound made for a much longer life too.

As for suspension, I kept it stock. If I could afford it, I'd go for the full-on Hotbits that two of the other DSM guys have. It's pricey, but I think they're able to rebuild the shocks instead of getting a whole new setup, so after a while, it could pay for itself.
