Street Build 1G Build: Return of the DSMer!

Slowly restoring this 93 AWD.

Not saying that killed the rod, but it had too much timing in it. Wild to see one break like that. Usually it's pulled the pin out of the piston, or it spun a rod bearing and torched the big end. Good call on not doing 1400HD's or you'd be doing this again sooner than you'd like. The CP's look like good pistons. Make sure you detail the valve reliefs and get rid of the sharp edges and thin sections.

Bigger turbo:sneaky:
If anything I've thought about going to a smaller turbo. I'd love to go down 1 or 2 sizes on the Xona lineup but it would cost too much to sell mine (very hard to sell expensive turbos) and buy a new Xona. Overall, I'm still pretty happy with the 71-64s. 30 psi at 4600 and I'll be pushing that down even further with the new engine build hopefully.

I suspect there was too much timing at max torque. What gives it away to you?

Well, the car is entering it's final form. I'm going all out with the engine out of the car. I stripped the car down further than I've ever stripped it before. Almost no interior, almost nothing in the engine bay. The car will be lighter and faster than ever with newer, better technology.

Updates to come:
1) new wiring harness
2) new battery/power setup
3) new engine
4) new catch can
5) digital dash with gps speed sensor
6) painted engine bay

etc etc

First on the list is a refurbished and welded clutch pedal assembly. Kind of a pain to takeout but all I have is time right now waiting on the new engine. I wire-wheeled each part down and hit them with the some rust treatment as well as Rustoleum 2x. Rustolem 2x is a great, cheap paint that tests very well in comparison with many other brands.

I installed a bronze clutch pedal bushing and had the clutch pedal welded in place. May I never have to do this again.

I did the same with my gas pedal and brake proportioning valve..

I see you watch PF too. I love watching his channel. Allows many of us to really see the real value of many items we look at to purchase without having to find out the hard way, if the cost is worth it. Shows as close to real world comparisons as you can get. Allows me to know when to go expensive a d when to go cheap too. I love it.

Still loving the car and following the build, if it wasn't for another baby on the way and planning to move next year now, I would be somewhere further in life with my cars.....but all in due time!

What's interesting is a lot of time the most expensive brands don't do well.

Congrats on the baby, that's much better than a DSM.

They sure don't, I never believed in the hype of snap on/mac/matco/etc. hand tools. I do like their air tools though. I love my Milwaukee power tools though.

It is nice to see some brands I've never seen or heard of to, like wera or whia not sure I would pay their price but seem pretty damn good.

Thank you very much....that it is, kids are my life, DSM is my hobby and love for cars.

Been reading this build the past couple days. New to the site and trying to squash my DSM fix until I have some cash flow down the road. Had a 93 laser rs n/t that i put through the ringer in college. No mods but burned up the clutch, destroyed the transmission and had a timing belt snap 150miles from civilization in Wyoming resulting in a blown motor. Only to flip it in Colorado on a mountain road several months after dropping a new motor in it.

I need a glossary for all the acronyms 🤯
Excited to see the new setup!

Nice, hit me up if you have any questions.

I didn't like how the front passenger brake line looked and sat in the engine bay. It ran right through my new battery setup, so I wanted to clean that up with some SS line with new fittings. I used 3an SS line at 42", which was the perfect length, and a 3an to 10mmx1 adaptor fitting. I secured it to the frame using existing bolt holes that were in convenient spots.

I switched from a rear battery setup to the JMF/PC925 battery setup with new connections. Don’t ask me why.
I had to rewire the fans and tuck that wiring under the wheel well. I added a nice ground lug from JL Audio. I ground off some paint to make a good connection to chassis.

I had a new harness made by a guy I found through Facebook. Great price, however, I had a lot of issues with it. One thing I didn't know going in was that he replaced the whole MPI fuse/relay system with a 6-relay board. So instead of just plugging into the MPI I had to connect around 10 power wires for injectors, coils, ecu power etc etc to this big 12"x12" relay board. Plus, I had nowhere to put the stupid board. It wouldn't fit under my passenger seat and when I tried to anchor it to the firewall it completely shattered.

I found a nice replacement at Leash Electronics that was much smaller. I installed it behind the passenger glove box, and I'm running everything to this panel except the fans and fuel pump.

I wound up refurbishing my fuel sender cap with Rustoleum, redoing my fuel pump wiring and draining my fuel tank of the ethanol. It's interesting that even after draining the tank I had 1/4 gallon of ethanol left over. I had to jack-up the car at an angle to get the rest out.

I had a heavy-duty relay I added just because and ran a little higher quality wiring for power and ground.
