Winter 07/08 Projects and Plans?

I can't believe you said that. Groan!

That's almost as bad as, "Coasting? There's no coasting in racing!" (Tom Hanks in "A League of Their Own." Well, sort of)

How about, "Brakes? We don't need no steeenking brakes!" (From "Tres Amigos")

I was trying to be funny there Rich.

DOWNSHIFT....

There you go. I hit the brakes only 3 times and tap them 3 times on a 1.8 mile curcuit. When I say tap, I mean tap just to get the front settled....Thats it. The other time I am full throttle where I can be and where I need to be in the throttle everywhere else. Thats the reason I can use jsut 3 sets of pads in a full 6 race (12 with practice sessions) in a season. I could actually get by on 2, but like to have fresh pads when and if I needed them. You never know what the other nut behind another wheel is going to be doing out there. I am only on the brakes hard in 1 corner and that is because I go from around 95 - 100 mph down a short shoot straight away into a 90+ degree turn. My car will not go through a 90 degree turn at 100 mph. Hell I tried at 75 once and ended up almost in some trees. Wasn't fun.....The fastest guy on that track even has to go through there around 40 - 45, its just a slow turn. Almost every track has them.

Other than that, no brakes.

Has everyone read this?

StopTech : Balanced Brake Upgrades

You cannot dial in more rear pressure, unless you install the valve backwards and dial out more front. I'm leaving mine alone.
The stock valve reduces pressure too much. The adjustable allows you to run with anywhere from zero pressure bias to dialing OUT as much rear bias as needed. When I first installed mine I left it "zeroed", and dialed out until the rear (just) stopped "coming around" under hard (threshold) braking. That was actually kind of fun. OMG:cool:

This type of system becomes important when the car has major brake upgrades, stickier tires, C/G changes (lowering), mismatched pads, weight reduction and other things that affect weight transfer and f/r bias.

Now, I KNOW my rear brakes are actually doing their share, not just adding unsprung/rotating mass.

Did you do a write-up on your install of the adjustable valve? If not, could you either send me or post some more info about how you plummed the adjustable valve in with your brakes?

He plumbed it with a f/r split instead of the stock diagonal with a 2 lb. rpv inline with the front brakes. His setup is identical to this diagram except he didn't use a rpv for the rear brakes.

A short update..

After stripping out a lot from the interior and working on a bunch of mini projects I'm finally getting on top of things. I just finished up wiring in my wideband and also boxed in my relocated battery.

I also sold my old set of Enkei MM2s for $3 less than what I bought them for new and put in an order for new wheels on Sunday night. I decided to go with 17x8 OZ Ultraleggeras. I received them last night, replaced a worn out tie rod end, and mounted them. I think they look good, fit well, and are fairly affordable. ($263 each on tirerack) At 16.7 lbs they are also a lot lighter than my old wheels and the stockers.
These pics are sort of crappy since they are in my garage. The damn snow keeps coming.

Let me know what you think of the progress. Hopefully I'll get to take it out soon and find out if I need to roll my fenders.

HouseGSX, I LOVE those wheels!!! Did you get those MX's from tire rack as well?

You dont have to tell me about snow!

Let me know how you like that AEM wideband in relation with DSMlink.

Thanks! Yes, I got the tires from tirerack. They were already mounted and everything. They came with centering rings and lug nuts as well.

I have the AEM uego all wired up for dsmlink, but haven't put my battery in yet to check that it's working. As soon as the weather breaks I can get the car inspected and start tuning with it.

If you dont mine me asking, what was the cost on those MX's and for what size?

I think they were $125 each. I didn't bother looking around for a better deal because I was getting them with wheels and wanted them to be mounted, balanced etc when I got them.
They are 245/40/17. No clearance issues at all on the inside with a +40mm backspace.

$125 is not too bad for an awesome street tire.

Dsmlink
wideband
punishment racing FMI
camber kit
Are allll coming with ups shortly! YES!!! I feel like I am accomplishing something.

I have not done a seperate write up, it would literally take a full day to type that much as I am a terribly slow type-er.

Eric's diagram sums it up well, I have some pics posted in the thread referenced also. I have no problem answering any questions you may have, if I know the answer.

So, I finally got my butt in the garage and started doing some of my "winter" projects...a little late. I decided to purchase a crank scraper. What's different about this scraper is that there is a teflon piece that actually comes in contact with the crank until it is "bed in". I purchased it from Home and dealt with Kevin Johnson...one hell of a guy. Anyway it took some work to clearance the teflon but I'm sure I'll be more than pleased with the end result. Now I just need to bolt up my new oil pan and I can check of one of several boxes.

Just dropped off the aluminum I/C pipe bends to the welder. With any luck they'll be done tomorrow or Monday and I can put them on the car Tuesday and start doing some tuning mid-week. Only two weeks before our first event. Damn that came quick! I still have to do all the regular maintenance too!

Two weeks before your first event?
In Colorado?

What is it, an ice race?

You'll have to let us know how well that oil pan seals up as I've heard of some issues from others trying to use it.

They always seem to come up quick even if you are prepared for them. Something always comes up 1st or gets you thrown off your schedule. Then, you are in the shop all night before the event trying to get it ready. Almost never fails.

What event is it Chris?

Please share what you've heard. The flange is pretty thick and right now it sits flat on a granite surface plate. It doesn't have the "groove" found on the stocker but it utilizes studs so I can torque it a little higher. Is there a superior gasket sealer out their that is preferable over your typical permatex stuff? I absolutely HATE leaks and if this thing does I will be extremely disappointed!

cioc your car looks awesome!!

hey guys do any of you run the vip slotted rotors? I am trying to purchase their kit that includes slotted rear and front rotors with ultimate pads. Its in a good price and my stocky brakes are giving out.

The only slotted rotors you can trust are Brembos, because the slots (and holes) are cast, not cut or drilled. Better get solid, vented rotors. Besides, holes and slots serve no useful purpose* other than helping a rotor fail faster from cracking. Oh, and they look good to the unwashed public. Get a set for impressing the rubes whilst cruising the boulevard, if you like.

If you are just replacing stock rotors, youi can't beat the stockers. Besides, they only cost $20 each, so you can afford to carry spares.

*Yes, I've heard all the crap about the advantages of slots and holes. It's all hogwash.

chavez - I run the VIP Garage kit on my car and have had no issues what so ever with them. Very good kit for the price and a good company to work with man. Why are you going with the Ultimate pads? Are you tracking your car or just daily driving it? You will not be dissapointed with their kit.

I've just heard that they have issues sealing. I believe Fel-Pro makes an actual gasket for the 4g63 oil pan, that may work better than the sealant since it doesn't have the groove for it.
