Plans and projects for the 10-11 offseason? (Related to Road Racing/AutoX/Rally)

If anything, it's now more rigid than stock, I'd guess.

What do you now use as a jacking point for the front/center of the car? I'd like to presume the tubular deal is stronger in that instance also but I had to ask, real world like.

I've just finished lowering (3/4"), re-angling and moving the splitter rearward (1") a bit. I should see a bit better approach angles and some additional air stolen from going under the car, pushed through the FMIC and radiator instead.
I'll use the tubular cross member as the jacking point. But I'm glad you reminded me of that though, as I was about to weld a nut to the center of it, where the jack would go, for the lower FMIC mounting point. I'll have to do two lower mounts to leave room in the center for the jack. The upper mounting location will be the inner crash beam studs.

However, I just mocked up the turbo set up with the FP cast O2 housing (just arrived yesterday) and I found that my new mounting location for the radiator brings it too close to the turbo. It doesn't fit. The O2 housing touches the fan. I'll have to extend the lower tabs that were welded on by a couple inches. That will change the plans I had for the FMIC slightly, but I have no other choice. It should still leave me some room for the ducting I want to do in front of the FMIC, hopefully. Or, now that I think about it, I could just change the plans for the fans - I was going to use a Mishimoto shroud with two fans. I could just use a single fan in the center and remove the shroud - guess the shroud won't be necessary if I'm going to do some ducting after the radiator. I just hope the single fan would be enough.

I've got to send the O2 housing and manifold off to Swaintech to get coated... which is a bummer because the cast housing looks so very nice on its own all polished up. Oh well.

Would placing pusher fans in front of the radiator give you the clearance you seek? I use the same PWR radiator with 2 12" Spal pusher fans installed. I do not have a shroud though.

Well I'd like to sandwich the radiator and FMIC together if I can. So I'm not sure I want to try a pusher setup. Plus, I'm not big on the idea of a pusher setup for a track car.

I agree, pusher fans are suboptimal. That said, I've got mine setup push-style (packaging issues/do what ya gotta do!) with the AC still in and an FMIC and have zero cooling woes.

Chris, I seem to recall some of last seasons WRC cars having their fans mounted horizontally within the ductwork as sort of a vertical pull-style setup. Kind of has me thinking...

Cams are installed, as of today!

Here's a quick photo of the work I've been doing on the front end... don't know that I'm going to be able to relocated the inlet/outlet of the radiator like I wanted (at least for now), but I will still have some good room to play with for the FMIC/radiator. Will post some pics of the manifold/turbo setup later.

Well you have all sorts of room do that custom mounted radiator setup you were talking about now! I like it. Are you going to upgrade to -AN fittings and leave them in the stock location on the radiator?

When I convert to AN fittings for the radiator - which I have sitting on my work bench already - I'll put them on when I'm able to move the inlet/outlet on the radiator iteself. It won't be in the stock locations. I think I've decided I'll wait until I change out the power steering pump for an MR2 pump. That will open up even more space in front of the water pump.
 
well ran my first event today, with completely stock setup and futura tires ( horrible ) after sliding around the course i managed to beat a few people but was a few seconds off of most in my class. i was wondering what tires most people are running on the 2g awd's. Also what i should modify first? I did feel an awful lot of body roll as well.

My advice is to keep running the same tires and leave the car as-is. You'll learn faster that way. Grippy tires mask driving mistakes, which is not what you want when you're learning. You want to feel all the pain. LOL

oh well i definately felt the pain LOL. you do have a point that with more practice with a crappy setup would make me better, but i feel like 2 seconds was way close. I think im gonna pick up some tires before next race then in the future get some sway bars. I felt like i was drifting out there.

Let me know what you think of the S1's Jim. I'm considering getting a pair. I'd like some before/after data, if there aren't too many variables.

Lots of variables but here goes:

Initial butt-dyno results are, I forgot how bloody fast this thing is, compared to my N/A Soob wagon. It does feel faster than it used to be but the situation is deceptive at best.

I can say this, I haven't touched the MBC since it was together last time and the boost is 1# lower. More airflow through smaller intake runners, WOOT! Oh, and seemingly more power at less boost pressure. Win.

The idle isn't noticeably rougher than before (memory...) and spool is still in the same general zone as before. Truthfully, I'd have preferred a choppier idle but I didn't want to tax the valvetrain/create a bunch of peripheral problems by using a higher stress top end. This is, after all not a quest for dyno numbers.

Short story, liking the S1's a lot.
