On the Waterfront
Marlon Brando as Terry Malloy

I didn't ask YOU, but it's nice that you took the time to look that up.
Took you long enough, though. The question is about 40 posts back. Is Google really that slow?

I have this same problem with my crew. I throw out obscure references to great old stuff, and they don't know what I'm talking about. They've never seen Le Mans ("Racing is life"), heard Brother Dave Gardner ("The worst I ever had was wonderful"), or watched the greatest moment in sports (Franz Klammer's downhill run in the 1976 Olumpics).

If ya live long enough, you see and hear some really cool stuff. Today's crappy movies can't hold a candle to the oldies but goodies. For every Mission Impossible 6 there is On the Waterfront, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Forbidden Planet and half a dozen other classics. As for today's music (sorry, didn't mean to call it "music")...let's just say "Everybody loves Credence." (where'd THAT come from, eclipse2via?)

But racing never changes. I see the same fire now that I did 35 years ago. The cars are different but the people in racing are just the same. Once the flag drops, we forget about problems with religion, politics, race, creed, economics, jobs, and all the other nonessential elements of our otherwise "drab, wretched lives" (Who said that?). For a weekend, we get away from it all, and really LIVE!

"Racing is life," as Steve MacQueen said.

Ain't it the truth? Ain't it the truth? (Who said that?)

*sigh* Nostalgia just isn't what it used to be. (I said that)

I didn't need goggle. I used to have the time to watch a lot of old movies when I worked graveyard shift. Now Sponge Bob is what is usually on my TV. My current job doesn't give me the time or freedom to go online on the job. I get an hour or two online in the evening while the kids are watching TV.

Life may be in the nostaglia stage for you, for me it's in the complicated stage of cramming in an hour for working on the car in between t-ball or soccer practise for my kids and dinner.

I don't know your references above. The drive to compete is only slowing growing in me. I never tracked until the past few years. It has always been me pushing myself before, but as I run more advanced groups I figure TT is in my near future. Although with my present situation I don't think I have a very competitive car.

Sir, its called "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world" ;)

Though some may know the remake and yet still very funny version called "Rat Race", though maybe not as good as the original, its still good.

And I still have yet to see The Producers. Its hurt me to say that.

On topic though, I need to get out to some open track days. Though I need at least a decent set of tires first. The 16's all seasons on there wont cut it... though make for some fun slides. Hopefully I can get the 17x9's I want by early next season. I know a few guys in Porsche clubs so Ill have to try to get up to Mid-ohio any chance I can.
Still need to fix windshield but insurance will cover that.

The movie is a sanitized, politically correct version of the Broadway play. See the play if it comes to town. It is much better and funnier than the movie.

The finest tire you can buy at your level are 235/40-17 Toyo Prox RA1s. They stick good and wear like iron. Buy a set of Mustang Cobra SVT wheels to mount them on. Used wheels that should fit (but may not go over a big brake setup--some will, some won't) are 3000GT/Stealth wheels or 2nd gen 17 in. Eclipse wheels (try one first, before you buy a set). You might be able to find everything you need on Ebay dirt cheap.

Which version of the movie?

I've always been a fan of "A funny thing happened on the way to the forum"

The original 1968 movie, with Zero Mostel, was a hoot.

The Broadway play, based on the movie, came out in 2001

The 2005 movie, based on the play, is a ripoff, with many of the best lines missing, Ulla being played by Uma Thurman instead of Leigh Zimmerman (va va voom!), and the Nazi characer becoming sympathic and lovable. The producers of Producers felt they could not offend Jews, homosexuals and Nazis, like the play does, so they made it politically correct.

The orginal movie was about a musical.
The musical was adapted into a musical film, becoming a movie based on a musical based on a movie about a musical.

See the play. You'll like it better than any of the movies.

I agree... I think.

I've thought about the RA1's though I was considering some other tires. Possibly thinking of Bridgestone's RE-O1R's for my Mazdaspeed 6. They dont come in the size I want for the talon so looking at tires for them. I do drive the talon a decent amount on the road so preferably want something that is good in any weather. The RA1's are an option. I have conisdered other tires such as Pilot Sports, Advan (Neova? I think) ya ya, I know. Expensive. If I have to i'll get nice set on some 17x9's and maybe a track set on something else.

But, I have a few months to worry about that. I don't really want something that is totally or only for road racing as I do drag race the car as well. So super stiff sidewalls would probably not be the best for drag racing but, they may not be as bad as I think they would be.

And one of my favorite movies is still Spaceballs. Think about it. One of the greatest lines in the movie relates to turbos.
"She's gone from suck to blow!"

One great thing about RA1s is that they wear so well, you can drive them to the track and back, and drive them on the street. Even on the slick RA1s I was running this past weekend, they worked in the wet. Not as well as rain tires, mind, but I had 2nd fastest time on a wet track, so they were working better than you'd think for slicks. When they have tread, they are a superb rain tire. So, if you buy a new set, they would work year round.

I streeted RA1's for a summer on my MR2. Great not having to change tires at the local autox :) Got around 10k miles out of the rears before they got to the wear bars (compare to getting around 20k out of Pilot Sports on the rear). Fronts still looked new! Very good in the rain when new, but downright dangerous by the time you get to the wear bars (I hit a small puddle on the e-way and the car was suddenly in a different lane. Luckily no one else was trying to occupy the other lane at the same time!). Have not tried RA1's on my DSM since I'm still slowly working on killing off my Pilot Sports that I put on it 5 years ago :)

Rich

Where did you get your RA1's at? I'm used to always going to Tirerack for tires.

My plans for the winter are just getting ready for the 07 season.
I'm modifying my 90 AWD for racing.
1. Currently I'm changing the head gasket to a Mitsubishi Metal Gasket. Changing the water pump and generally cleaning the engine bay. Checking for other problems that might become a problem later on, like old lines and cracking wires.
2. I'm putting on 92 VR-4 Calipers, and the VR-4 knuckles, braided brake likes and new wilwood pads.
3. Putting on these Fender Flares I've had laying around for a few years now and wider tires 255/40/17. That size seems to be a good equation to making these cars more competitive.
4. 6point racing harness. 6 point because I found it really cheap and what is wrong with a little extra safety?
5. Come back to America (I think that should have actually been number one.)

I think there are some other things I want to do but I have to run and I can't remember them right now.

I think the movie Grand Prix is one of THE best movies I have ever seen. The fact that it was 3 hours long was even better! It had good racing scenes, audio, etc and plot! Hardly is there ever a decent plot in a car film which doesn't bother me, but one that does is a classic for sure. Grand Prix is one of the coolest 3 hours spent in my life on the couch :p

Probably the best part of Gran Prix and Le Mans is that the actors actually drove the cars. James Garner went on to do some actual racing in Trans Am (until he welched on an agreement with the wrong guy, got the snot beat out of him, and then other race teams wouldn't touch him again). Steve MacQueen actually raced motorcycles.

Other actors have been more or less successful in racing: Tommy Smothers (or was it Dickie?) in Formula A, Paul Newman (oops, P.L. Newman) in TransAm, James Dean (Porsche), and Craig T Nelson in Trans Am (until the other drivers cornered him in a dark alley and told him not to drive when stoned). P.L. Newman was probably the best of all the actor-drivers, but only rally drivers understood his line in CARS: "To turn left, you have to turn right."

When you hang around pro racers (I worked for a Trans Am team one summer) you hear a lot of weird stuff, some of which is actually true. (Consider everything I said above as unsubstantiated racing rumors).

The Eclipse is up at the Roll Cage Hospital getting fixed, even as we speak, so I have actually started my 2007 mods.

It's a Kirk bolt-in cage, and it was not designed for an Eclipse, no matter what Kirk says. Instead, it looks like a one-size-fits-all cage. To make it fit, the builders moved it left to the driver side, which put the right side of the cage in the passenger's helmet. A fabricator is cutting and moving the right side over a few inches so passengers can ride in more comfort. (My tuner, Mike the Mechanic, refuses to ride in the car any more until it's fixed, so this was first on my list. of to-dos.)

After that, we'll replace the stock passenger seat with a Kirkey, put on a removable steering wheel, and weld in the door bars.

Our next project will be to find a used 1G gas tank, and cut the mutha apart to see how to baffle it to prevent fuel starvation on long lefts. A surge tank and extra pump sound too complicated for me, and a fuel cell proved to be too expensive.

Next, we are going to get some 2.5 in. Teflon intercooler pipe, and redo all the intercooler couplings. I blew one off at Road America. We are also considering "coupling braces," which essentially bolt pipes of an intercooler together so they can't come apart at high boost.

If the snow hasn't fallen yet, we hope to get the DSMLink in. I have to replace my 90 PROM-less ECU with a 91-93 ECU to make this work. I'd like to get it in so we can lay a tune on it before putting it up for the winter. With the cage fixed, Mike can ride while we do third-gear pulls down the interstate.

That's on the immediate to-do list. We want to keep the car mobile as long as the weatehr holds. When the snow flies, we'll put it up on jackstands and go after the rest of the stuff listed somewhere above.

Rich

BTW Rich changing to a 91-93 ECU will required you to change your PTU, and coilpacks! I swear I sent you the link. Best bet would be to find a PROM'd '90 ECU.

Evan K. said:
There have been several '90 Eprom ECU's for sale on DSMLink recently. Also I have a friend who has a '90 eprom he may be willing to sell. I can't promise it though.

I immediately went to the user group page, but could not find any 90 ECUs for sale. Where are they?

I druther buy it from your friend (assuming the price is compatible with the others), since it would come from somebody on this list.
