How to Identify an EPROM ECU [Merged 5-9]

I am looking to get a eprom ecu so I can do the DSMLINK. Do all 95 turbo motors come with the eprom ecu? If I was looking at the ecu, it has numbers on it. With out opening it up, how do I tell? The person I am getting it from sent me some pics of the ecu, They said they did not want to open it up. They state it came out of a 95 gst. I just want to make sure before I spend 125.00 on it.

He probably doesnt want to open it up because he knows its not an eprom. Why doesnt he want to open it up? Its 4 tiny screws and the top just comes off. My 3 year old daughter can loosen 4 screws without damaging it. My advice is to save your money because it isnt an eprom.

Ask him what all the letters & numbers are on this sticker. But like others have said you can easily swap cases so even if its the proper ecu part# on the case it could have a reg board inside. If he doesn't want to open it, Id pass on it. You will not damage it, its only 4 screws like was said. If he can't do this its probably a scram as $125 is very cheep for one of these, there's probably a reason for this.

Save your money. If he don't want to open up the ecu and send you pics then obviously he know's its not an eprom. If he knows what an eprom ecu is then you can bet your ass he probly checked it. Price too low pics are horrible i say run away as fast as you can.

how do you if you have a eprom ecu? because im looking in to buying a 95 gst totally stock. how would I tell if it has eprom

I just bought an eprom ecu for my 90 laser rs turbo and it has an "E932a" eprom chip. Does anyone know what that is coded for (my car is a fwd 5 speed) and I think the eprom is for an auto trans. anyone know 100%? help me I'm not eprom smart. thanks in advance

This is about the n(th) post I've made within the past few days that I've gotten an answer straight from VFAQ/1000 Already Answered Questions.... I love it, that site makes me feel so smart!

>>>How can I tell if my ECU has an EPROM?
You would already know this (hint, hint) if you had used the FAQ Locator. Read Todd Day's EPROM check webpage.

One fact that is not mentioned on this page is how to quickly check ECUs *after 1990* for an EPROM. There is a label on the top of the ECU (not the sides). If this label has an "E" in the lower right-hand corner, you have an EPROM. If it has an "M" or "T" in that corner, you do not have an EPROM. 1990 owners have to open the ECU to find out, as there are both EPROM and non-EPROM 1990 ECUs. This tip is also on this page from the developers of the DSMlink (good link).

Galant VR-4 owners, again, have an edge - owing to the low production volume of that model, GVR4s are almost guaranteed to have an EPROM.

The Last Word: Hey, not ALL 1990s have EPROMs. Can't you read?
>>>

But yes, as 1GawdJunkie's link states, it's best to open it up and take a look.
