does anyone know how to hotsync? [Merged 9-6]

You can go to palmone.com and download the desktop software. You need to have this so it has a program to sync with. I had the same problem and more questions let me know.

i just got in my VIIx and ordered all the crap from pocketlogger.com. so tonight i decide to try and hotsync the palm with my laptop. i already got the serial-to-usb adapter, installed its software, installed the palm software, plugged in the palm, and nothing happens. it says it cant connect. under the icon in the bottom right of my laptop screen, under the "setup" line, it says that my serial port is "COM3" and i have no clue what this means. the palm says "the connction between your handheld computer and the desktop could not be established. please check your setup and try again." i am at the end of my rope here. anyone at all use a laptop to hotsync that can help me solve this problem? i hope it made sense. i am not computer savvy and i am about 2 seconds away from losing it.

Are you saying that you are taking the hotsync cable (Serial), plugging it into a serial to USB adapter and then into the laptop? Doesn't your laptop have a serial connection.

Anyway, you need to enable USB support through the Palm desktop. You need to right click on the hotsync icon in your taskbar by the clock. Is there a checkmark beside "Local USB". If there is not, you need to click on "Local USB".

If you are using a serial connection you need to tell the hotsync manager which COM port you are using. You are most likely using COM 1 if it's a laptop. To change that, right click on the hotsync manager and click on setup. Under the Local tab, choose COM 1 from the drop down box.

Hope that helps. :thumb:

I've had this problem before. Are you running windows 2000 or XP? If you are, did you install the hotsync software under the account your are logged in as? In order for palm hot sync software to recognize the usb connection to the serial, you would need to grant your accoutn administrative rights and then install it under that account. It installs some profile specific software that will not work unless you are a local admin. If you have any questions, please PM me.

to answer the first question- yes, serial into usb/serial adapter. and yes, i have a serial port but it is a female 15 hole one.
second question- there is a check next to "local" but it doesnt have an option for "local usb." when i click on setup/local the serial port is listed as "com3"

Ok, so the COM settings don't matter because you are using USB.

What version of Hotsync Manager are you running? You can right click on the icon by the clock and go to "About". I am using V 4.1.0.

Anyway, so when you right click on the Hotsync Manager in the lower right corner of the screen you don't see something like this:

Try this:

1.plug in the cable.
2.Go to control panel
3.Performance and Maintainence
4.System
5.Hardware Tab, and then Device Manager
6.About 3/4 of the way down you'll see a ports tab; click it
7.You'll be able to see the port # that the cables plugged into now
8.Then change the settings in the pocketlogger for that port...

Thats how I've connected things before when they wouldn't connect, but this will only work it you can change the port # in the pocketlogger program.

Hope it helps :thumb:

Why would he want to do that?

He is using a USB connection, not a serial connection.

i am using hotsync manager 3.1.0. do you think this might be the problem?

Vaio's have always been a problem with palm. You should have the newest version of their desktop software (4.1.4) to get the newest hotsync. Then, make sure you have uninstalled everything that is palm related and reboot. Then install the software and it should work. BTW, what is the brand of Serial to USB adaptor that you are using? Some of them have been known to have problems. I know the Belkin one I've used at work seems to work w/o incident.

It's the same thing in XP, they're all classified under ports. USB is still a port and if you have more than one then you have to get it's number to set it up for what your using. I don't think that's how it works with all usb devices but it does with a USB to SERIAL converter. Thats how I set up the ports with DSMLink. I hope it makes some sense... :thumb:

ok ok, so my computer has 3 usb ports, and if my hotsync thing says "com3" should i put it in the third one?

Yeah, that's why I was saying to follow the previous instructions to see which "port" the device was actually plugged into. But if that's not working, keep the port number the same and just change the cable to each of the 3 ports. You've already got one that you know doesn't work so your down to a 50/50 shot. If it doesn't work just tell me and I'll try to investigate it further :thumb:

1) That COM3 only relates to the serial port and has nothing to do with usb.
2) That 15-pin "serial" port is actually a vga port(like a desktop uses) so you can plug in an external monitor.

There's no serial plugs no laptops nowadays so I have no clue what you're talking about. There's USB ports only and that's what I was referring to. I was just trying to help, you never said you were trying to plug into a "serial"connection on the laptop, you stated a USB to serial converter I assumed that this meant you knew laptops dont have serial ports anymore. WTF

If you have a USB to Serial converter...
i.e. The USB plugs into you laptop...and the Serial plugs into the device OMG then this is what I was writing how to see what port it's on. If you connect it and follow my previous intructions it WILL show it in WIN XP Pro under the "ports" in device manager. I'm sorry my explanation was over some of your heads.

My 1 yr old Dell Inspiron 8600 has a serial port.

Then please explain to me how I have 4 USB devices attached to this HP compaq desktop I am using at work and only 2 COM ports are listed in the device manager? The machine has 2 serial ports in the back corresponding to the 2 COM ports in the device manager.

Hey I was just trying to explain something but am I going to have to research this to prove it? :|

So you laptop has onna these?

Mine shows it here, if I had my USB to Serial connector connected it would be listed here...and it's plugged into the "USB" port on the laptop and the Serail port on the device:

Whoops I went and looked it up and it does make a virtual serial port that uses the COMs. My bad. You're going to have to change the settings for the hotsync software to look for the palm on COM3, it is probably set on COM1

Ever have any luck? I have the same problem. Apparently you need to set the logs to upload in MMCD but I can't figure out how.

You can select the programs you want to have hotsynced but only for the modem connection... stupid old palm.

I have downloaded the plam one quick install and the plam desktop software (I am using a USB to RS232 9-pin serial) to try to preform the hotsync operation but, it say's that the connection between the handheld and the desktop could not be established. hhhhmmmm??? Could someone help me with this problem, please???? thank you

IIRC (I'm at work & this computer doesn't have the Palm Desktop software on it), part of the software is the Hot Sync Manager. This must be open & running in the background to perform the hot sync operation. When open you will see the little hot sync icon in the system tray. I get the same error you've gotten when I forget to open this 1st. :coy:
