Altered Mental Status (1G AWD 5spd)

Old street racing legend reborn

Changed absolutely nothing but shifting faster. Still not as fast as I could be, but proof is in the pudding. I launched waaaay better too. This thing actually felt like a proper AWD launch for the first time in forever.

It’s also now officially faster than the 16G/Auto setup I had before. Which freakin ripped too.

Also, for giggles, it ran this 1/4 mile time letting off at the 1/8th. ROFL

Tickled pink, man.

"You almost had me? You never had me—you never had your car... Granny shiftin', not double clutchin' like you should. You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake!"

Sorry couldn’t help but quote haha.

Been lurking and watching your thread. Great job with all of the Progress! I have been learning a lot from all of the comments even if it’s just small side notes.

Turned the boost up to 24lbs, and holy crap does it rip man. I drove the car for like 20 mins and decided to try an AWD launch. That was a mistake. It slipped the clutch in 1st gear. What’s weird is it just grabs for days in 2nd and 3rd though. I don’t hear the wheels spinning so I’m assuming it’s clutch slip.

I’m gonna let it cool way down and try again in a few hours. It’s a full face ceramic clutch so it shouldn’t glaze or whatever. Curious to hear y’all’s thoughts. Is 1st gear in 1G DSMs just that quick that it feels like it’s slipping?

Either way, God this car is magic at 24lbs. Gonna get a log later and see how close my injectors will let me get to 30lbs. :D
If the car pulls strong with 24 psi of boost in 3rd or 4th WOT, then most likely the clutch disc is fine.
Usually when the clutch disc starts slipping, the symptom of slipping would start to be more obvious from higher gear at higher RPM. Like if you see the engine speed increases quickly but the car is not accelerating in 3rd or 4the at high RPM, then most likely the disc is shot.
If the disc is slipping, you would see that the vehicle speed wouldn't match with engine speed vs gear ratio vs tire size.

Hell yeah, thanks Hiroshi. I can rev it completely out in 3rd with no slipping. I have not tried to rev 4th out yet as that would be doing way into the 100's on these little overcrowded back roads. Haha. I'll take the car to work one day and use some of those gorgeous, beautiful alabama back roads for that.

I really...really want to hit up a drag strip this weekend to get some testing in. But, we'll see. I'm just having the biggest problem swallowing $40 for car and driver, and then $25 per "spectator" after that just for a 1/8th mile strip. I'm not about to spend $90 just to make some 1/8th mile hits.

Unrelated to the car but slight whining here: God I wish I lived closer to a 1/4 mile track. Or had a truck and trailer to hit up the 1/4mi track in north AL. Meh.

Honestly man it really makes me happy to see your hard work pay off and you finally get to enjoy the car!

Thanks broski. It’s nowhere near as fast as it could be, but that’s all on me. I’m happy with forward progress. The goal is 7’s in the 1/8th and 11’s in the 1/4. If I can hit that I’ll be stoked. Even an 11.9 I’ll be happy with. LOL

But yeah. Appreciate everyone that has helped and given advice. Even those that don’t comment anymore. I don’t blame you. Thank you all anyway! I really do appreciate it.

Hey man one quick thought I don’t think I’ve mentioned in this before but I could be wrong LOL, in regards to your dipstick issue, back in my fp red days on a rebuilt stock motor, my dipstick started moving around 30 psi or so, that’s when I made the switch to dual -10an vented set up and that solved the issue, I never needed dipstick with a spring, plus I always heard using that just means the CC pressure is gonna look for the next path of least resistance, if I were you I would move to the dual 10an vented as soon as possible, but as others have said, I’m happy your out rippin and enjoying the car, that’s what’s it’s all about:rocks:

Great minds think alike! I ordered some 1/2” fittings to put on my VC which is basically -10AN sized. I’m gonna do that this weekend and see if that helps. Because these little stock size lines just aren’t working. I’m hoping that’s the fix.

If I have to I’ll put four damn 1/2 fittings on this cover. Lol.

Does your catch can setup return to the pre turbo intake pipe? Or it's open to atmosphere?

I never had any oil residue around my catch can:idontknow:, every engine’s different, I still applaud my machine shop tho, re watch my dyno video, at 37 psi you don’t see a puff of any smoke or blow by coming out of my engine bay:cool:, and not to start a debate on vented vs sealed set ups, but my vented set up has worked out great, it’s also debatable on the efficiency of those re circulated oil vapors going back into the combustion chamber and supposedly lowering your knock threshold but who knows LOL

I’ve been driving the car to work and the catch can is working properly now. I blew the lines out, cleaned the filter of the can and removed one of the baffles that wasn’t necessary and now it’s actually smoking out the can like it should and there’s no more oil spraying from the BOV.

Also I found where my oil consumption is coming from. The oil return flange is leaking now more than a drip. So it’s not burning oil it’s just leaking out.

Woo. Go team.

Talon officially in the 12’s. Freakin hilarious ricer excuses to follow.

Ricer explanation/excuses:

Roll up to the little stretch of Alabama road after getting off, and decided screw it. Let's make a pass. It's uphill, and I have a full ass tank of E85, but it's nice and cool out. Come to a stop, load up on the e-brake and hit the 2-step. Slip the clutch a little too aggressively and since my windows are down I can hear all four tires burning out. Shit, well that's a terrible launch. Let's keep going though, so I keep it floored, it catches traction and boogies. Feels great, granny shift to 2nd kind of hit the limiter a bit waiting to catch traction. Oops, this pass is gonna suck. Stay in it anyway, rip it to 8k in 2nd, granny shift to 3rd. No issues there, let's keep boogying. Get to top of 3rd at like 8k RPM, shift gently and grannily into 4th and let out thinking the pass is slow anyway, look down at the Dragy info and see it say verified 4.6 0-60 and 8.3 1/8th mile? Do F*CKING WHAT?! Quickly try to get back into it in 4th, but was too late and see it pop up a time. 12.99. Are you kidding me? ROFL

You'd have thought I ran a 9 second pass and won the lottery at the same time with how I was celebrating in the car. It's my first time hitting 12's in my own personal vehicle that I built and tuned myself. I legit thought this was a mid 13's pass and had so much working against me...if I stayed in it and didn't coast in 4th I wonder what it would've been.

This car rips and I love it. It's quick despite my ineptitude at shifting fast and launching. Hour trip to work one way there and back two days in a row, one of which was in 90* temps with 99% humidity in the blazing sun and it never overheated. I wasn't driving gentle either, I was boosting to 24lbs and enjoying the car.

Stoked. I get it, it's nothing. You've ran 11's in a 3 cylinder geo metro down a cylinder and running off of half water in the tank, but this is a big deal to me and a huge milestone. With a pro driver or someone who wasn't an idiot at driving a manual DSM, I really have no doubt this thing could click off a low 12 in its current form nothing changed, 11's with more boost. But man. I needed this today. To say I've had a bad night would be quite the understatement.

Coasted to a 12. Uphill, with a full tank of E85 after doing an AWD burnout. So funny. I love this car, and you guys for helping me get here.

Officially time for 8s now!

I've never made any sort of a pass in my car so you're also officially faster than me in any drag race :D

Thanks broski. And yeah...right. LOL

I see your eights, and raise you 7s! In the 1/8th. Lol.

Congrats :thumb: It could be in the mid to low 12s with some drag radials or slicks.

With my complete idiocy at M/T DSMs, I'm genuinely worried I'd break literally everything in the drivetrain at one time if I had that. I did a really good launch the other day, I just get excited(and being tired after a 12 hour shift doesn't help either) sometimes and slip it too fast. When I'm controlled with the slipping it's good. I'd really like to try it on a prepped surface but don't wanna settle for an 1/8th mile track. I think with even measly 1.6 60's and shifting faster than an arthritic grandma I could do pretty good.

This makes me feel awesome though. Stoked. Thanks you guys.

You've got the Mph for a 7 second pass for sure. This was in my 06 STI, 1.74 60'

I never did get into the 7s :( broke the trans and sold it.

Well that just plain makes me happy. (not at the broke trans and selling it part. :( )

Man. Wish everyone was closer. I'd buy everyone a beer(or soda) to celebrate.

Other than "just launch better, scrub" do you guys have any advice for better 60's? Like, should I lower tire pressure? I think it's 30lbs on all four corners right now.

Besides practicing and getting used to launch, from my experience, better tires and lightweight rims was the easiest mods to lower the time. You would be surprised if you put drag radials or slicks. Even if you drive the same way with the same tuning and setup, 1/4 mile ET would be lowered a lot, like easily cut down half a sec or more from cheap street tires.

Thanks brotha. I swear we gotta find a good midway point to meet with the DSMs one day. Or if I honestly ever get a truck, I'll tow it down there and whether yours is done or not we can cruise. Isn't there a nice 1/4mile track near you? :D
