1990 AWD Talon Flash Red 5spd

I bought this a quick project but it’s been a multi-year commitment.

Fresh dipstick and different oil pressure spring to lower post balance shaft pressure and to keep the stick from popping out. Didn’t get a chance to take it on a cruise but at least it wasn’t pegging the gauge on startup as usual. Also put in some fresh Accel wires since my Rockauto close out ones fell apart.

After scrambling to get the DSM ready for Scca Track night in america I had mixed results. Last year I had issues with overheating, brake fade and intercooler pipes blowing off. This year all those issues seemed to be resolved. I made it through the parade session and the first hot session. The car felt great even at low boost and I didn’t run into any knock issues. But when pulling into the pit smoke came out from under the hood. There was power steering fluid everywhere. All over the pump and even down across the subframe. I’m not yet sure if it boiled over or the rack blew a seal. But I wasn’t able to make the last two session. Still it was a good time and motivation to come back in the future.

I reviewed some of the ecmlink data from the Scca official #track night. My top speed I hit coming out of nascar turn 2 before the chicane was 114.3mph. Even with no boost controller and a 7cm housing, the 16g boost creeped to 21.7lbs but I didn’t have any piping blowoff. At that boost I saw 59.6% injector duty so I could safely handle more psi. The virtual dyno feature was estimating just over 300hp and 260ft/tq which I know isn’t extremely accurate. As the session neared the end I got up to 223f coolant temp with both fans blowing. I turned the heater on and it started to go down from there to make sure it didn’t get worse. Improving my ducting would likely help. And event though I didn’t get to spend a lot of time tuning the car prior. I only had one spot that kept giving me knock under boost with just 1.4 degree of knock ret. I spent most of the time in 3rd gear. Some corners 2nd might be better my 2nd gear synchro is crunchy so I stayed in third and up to 4th on the ovals.

I haven’t made any recent updates since the car has been running pretty good and I have been tweaking my tune in ecmlink. It’s been 1000 miles in since my last engine rebuild so I caught up with some spring maintenance. Fresh @officialngksparkplugs BPRS7ES plugs to replace the ones that have been there while I worked out the tune. I straightened out my fmic, added some ducting, and a lower spoiler from a Mustang to try to direct more air through the fmic and radiator. I still need to tweak the fmic some more. I want to get it right up against the bumper at the bottom. I got rid of the closeout @rockauto_llc pads for some @stoptech z26 pads to reduce the pad fade I felt at my last track day. I added in a Spectre air filter guard to deflect the air coming off the fans. I’m making a switch to @amsoilinc fluids. I added some cooling system boost, fresh signature, and DOT 4 racing brake fluid.

Posting in case anyone else runs into this issue in the future. I was having trouble lining up the driver’s mount while doing poly mounts. I already had the trans and front mount in. Resorted to using factory jack and it pushed the engine forward easily. Now just enjoying the vibes at 3k sans balance shafts.
