Did you just tighten the metal tube down with the clamp so it squeezes it shut, or is there more wizardry? Kinda hard to tell from the picture.
Locate the clamp in between the oil dipstick rubber part and the tube, and then just tighten.

Edit - for information sake, I've been reading HighBoooost/Aaron Ruppert's "how to tune 1G SD" PDF and his recommendation is basically backwards. Dial idle in with deadtimes, then adjust VE to make it .25-.28 at idle. Go cruise with it locked in openloop and use the VEAdjust tool to dial in cruising, then use global to dial in WOT. Using deadtimes to fix any issues with combinedFT in between everything.
This was a good read for me tonight. Not all of it applies to you but a lot of good info in there:

Good stuff.

Honestly, from what I'm reading if this thing does the same thing again then it's a mechanical issue. There should be no reason that I have to kneecap it and struggle with it super hard to get it to idle and be within spec.

Am I wrong with what I am about to say next? I feel like it should be set global and deadtimes to what ECMLink and the FIC injector deadtimes call for. Then it should start and at least be close to idling. If it needs some adjustment, I shouldn't need to take all the cells in the VE idle area down to the 30's just to get AirflowPerRev to match .25-.30. It shouldn't be such a huge struggle to get it to idle that it then bogs/dies if you try to rev it. If it does, there's a mechanical issue somewhere.

I just don't know what that issue could be. I've verified mechanical timing, verified timing is set to 5*BTDC, I've got a new fuel pump in it, injectors are clean and good, new AFPR diaphragm. No boost leaks, compression is within spec. No fuel leaks, new bosch narrowband o2 sensor, wiring is clean and good. If it still fights me and is a nightmare then 1) I'm just doing something wrong and I'll get Enrique to remote in and teach me/show me or 2) There's something mechanically wrong that I'm missing.

Again, I'm probably overthinking it but I'm trying to plan for the worst. Kind of looking forward to it, but I'm kind of dreading it too.

I wouldn’t worry about trying to get AirflowPerRev allll the way down there. You are cammed so it will be a bit higher (I think).

Mine is around .33 with VE cells in the upper 30s low 40s. Holds idle just fine and afr is consistent from 14.7-15. I’ve never had the car die on me while coming to a stop. My STFT hovers around 0 but my LTFT is around 3% so wondering if I should increase the global and lower the deadtime. I feel like my global should be higher for these FIC 1050s.

You can check my log here:

Definitely will check the log later when I’m back at the computer. And what you’re describing is exactly what I want.

Tried to take it to work today and it was acting like it was out of fuel. Fuel gauge showed it should've had slightly less than 1/8th of a tank. Basically shortly before the "E" tick on the gauge. I think when I installed the fuel pump I have it up too high. Hopefully that's the problem at least. I'm not gonna pull the fuel pump back out for the 15th time, so I'll just keep at least half a tank in it. LOL.

Hoping that's the problem at least. It sure acted like it was running out of gas though. Wideband pegging lean, it popping and sputtering and eventually levelled out once the fuel stopped sloshing. But yeah. Fun times. I've never run a car out of gas, so this is all new to me. ROFL

Checked your log, very interesting. Your deadtimes are drastically different than mine, and you have waaaay more vacuum at idle than I do. Honestly, I need to pull the valvecover soon and re-check the part number on these cams. I really think I've got the BC276's or BC280's in here. No one else with BC272's have the vacuum issue and idle that I do.

But, with that said log helps a lot. You don't happen to have a log where you freerev or cruising do you? Trying to get as much info ready as possible.

Here's one of me cruising home. I didn't get into boost at all legit babied the car home. I'm on stock SD map pretty much and stock 1G fuel/timing maps

I'm not an unreasonable man, but I would just like to state I would love to be in a camera-less, sound-proof room with a pneumatically locked steel door that stays locked for two solid minutes.

Who would I be in this room with?

The person who decided gas cans needed to be extremely overly difficult to use in the name of "safety".

Two minutes. I'd settle for one.

Dude they conversion kits to turn them into "old style" I bought some so I have the old style flex hose and the cans have a vent

Yep. Have some already ordered before I made the post. But trying to un-FUBAR it in preparation is just idiotic. The fact we even have to do this is stupid when you used to be able to just buy them already this way.

I shouldn't HAVE to buy some extra thing just to make something common sense and easy to use when it was exactly this way a very short time ago.

I was getting major idle surge at cold start. Lowered min and max timing tables at the lowest load factors (.3 and .4) and it's gone. Seems to move smoother from a stop also.

Changed global (from -49.6 to -44.9), took away the extra deadtime (am using the injbattadjust settings from FIC) and lowered my idle RPM (from 950 to 900). I think I have to adjust my ISC position again I'll be doing that next but take a look now.

Having some rear caliper issues, so I got desperate and decided to see if the FWD rear caliper I had would bolt up easily and what I'd need to do to make it work...pleased to report it bolts right up. The e-brake cable I made work by just bolting the AWD e-brake bracket on the opposite side of the caliper(on the FWD the e-brake bracket itself is longer, and mounts underneath the caliper. On an AWD this will hit the entire hub/arm assembly). Bolts right up no sweat.

While doing this, also made another discovery. On a working, good condition rear caliper the piston should just spin with minimal effort using the proper tool, AND it should thread in very fast. I was shocked at how fast the FWD caliper piston threaded in, and how easy it was. No wonder I kept reading comments about how easy the piston was supposed to spin and etc. The AWD calipers I had would just spin and spin and spin and spin. I'm gonna take one apart next week to try to rebuild it, and also see if the mechanism is stripped out or something. Because the one this FWD caliper replaced will not thread in past a certain point. Period. It'll spin fine, just won't go down any further.

But, all in all, I'm pleased with the results. I'm gonna probably order a replacement FWD caliper for the driver's side because while it did eventually compress/spin in, it was nowhere near as easy as the other side. I'll probably just buy two new ones so it'll have brand new calipers on all four corners.

End result was this.

This thing stops absolutely phenomenally. I need to fully bed the brakes in, but even 1/2-3/4 of the way down with moderate pedal pressure results in some extremely rapid stops. It stops as good or better than my Edge, which has phenomenal brakes. Crazy. Need to do a bunch more soldering and wiring on my next day(s) off, but that's for a future post.

Nice. Sadly my vacuum at idle is like -6 ish generally. So I'd have to adjust the timing spots way up there. I'll get there eventually though. Pretty committed about doing a completely from scratch tune on it, and when I do I'll do that.

Edit: Forgot to add, Hoosierdecal finally got off their ass after I filed a paypal claim. So my reproduction OEM badges/stickers came in today. They replace the long-long decals on the back bumper that say "Eagle Talon TSI" and the "16V DOHC TURBO" and "All Wheel Drive" on the sides. Looking forward to putting them on the car so it actually says what it's supposed to. Small details, but yeah.

Just as a heads up, I'm gonna try to not hound these forums so much anymore. So if you see less of me, that's why. Unlike last time, this isn't a rage quit because someone didn't help me or anything like that. Just need to stop posting so much. It's like an addiction.

As a bonus, maybe that means updates on the build thread will mean more and have more meat and potatoes. Thanks for the help up to here everyone and all the comments/posts.

Do what you gotta do! Im an email or text away if yoi eant off forum help.

I mean if you like posting there's nothing wrong with that. Whatever keeps you off Facebook. I try to spend most of my time on here just soaking everything in and for motivation of course.

I usually enjoy posting, but getting likened to a caveman because I made a lighthearted joke kind of kills the buzz I used to have. I always end up happier when I lessen my screen time, even if I 'enjoy' it or not. Plus (and I'm not being dramatic or fishing for complements, nor am I depressed. I mean this simply as a fact) I know people are tired of seeing constant updates to this thread.

It's better for everyone. I'm not leaving entirely but yeah, definitely gonna try to cut back.

I sometimes wander into to other activities when I get too busy, but always return to these forums. I'd rather have my mind on this forum and information than whatever useless junk lies on social media. Breaks are necessary, but no replacement with brain dead activities.

Anyone else struggle with motivation to drive their DSMs? I try to hype myself up to drive this thing, but sometimes I just can't.

Anyone else deal with that too? Like, it runs and it drives, I should be jumping at the chance....but it's so easy to get into my comfortable "quick" Edge and just drive to work with no issues. I don't have to keep the edge alive or worry about perfect starts, or any unforeseen gremlins.

Just curious if it's just me, or if this is normal. I still don't want to sell the Talon or anything, just bothers me sometimes that I need to put miles on it...but end up kind of not wanting to.

Its part of having project cars... i have 3 projects that all drive but I dont hop in them to go to work. Only use them on days I want to have a bit of fun.

One thing Ive learned is that you dont want to rely on a project car that has old parts as a daily.

Have a project that brings you smiles per gallon and 1 you can hop in to reliably get to work.

I have the opposite feeling here in mn we only get to drive them for the summer. So having them sit all winter, I can't say I've ever felt that way. I'll never know what it feels like to have a project car I could drive year round.

That makes sense and helps me feel better. I feel almost obligated to drive the car after all the work I've done to it, and the motivation it took to get it to this level. Lol. It helps to know that it makes the most sense to only drive the car when I want to.

There's something to this. When I can't drive the car(either due to weather back when it would leak water like a sieve, or mechanical issue that's downed it) are the times I find myself wanting to drive it the most. I think I just want something I can't have/it's the thrill of the hunt for me. To quote a good movie and great actor "I'm like a dog chasing a car, I don't know what I'd do with one if I actually caught it".

But yeah. Good stuff. I ordered an AEM TruBoost and I'm gonna throw that on the car instead. I've always wanted one, and I like that it'll match the other AEM gauges. This Hallman cockpit controlled MBC is fine, but it's in the way and eh. Just don't really care for it. Anyone want it when/if I go to sell it? It's just your basic/average Hallman Pro RX MBC with 10' cockpit controller cable. Comes with heavy duty spring and light duty spring.

This.

Im around Chicago, so the fun times can be very limiting from year to year. Roads get heavily salted so I usually only get a guarantee of about May to November and then along with my job demanding a lot of my time, knock that down to weekends and vacations. Luckily i ended up with a girl that also likes to cruise, so that i never had to have any battles to get time behind the wheel.

But every time I turn the key, its the same instant smile on my face since the day I was car shopping with my mom at a Mazda lot back in 1992 when I was 14, came across a 1G for the first time and the salesman let me sit in car and start it. Its always my Eleanor moment.

and every time i go across the border to the Indiana car meets, theres no less than 5 people waiting for me to get out of the car so they can talk about it, whether its to tell me hey are surprised to see a running DSM or relive their own memories of owning one. So theres the social aspect that the car gives me too.

Just curious if it's just me, or if this is normal. I still don't want to sell the Talon or anything, just bothers me sometimes that I need to put miles on it...but end up kind of not wanting to.
Im just going to throw this out there cause it does happen to me sometimes.... Are you scared to drive the car? Meaning, that you put so much work into getting it running.. and now that its in a managable state, theres a little bit of paranoia that something else will break and you would just not be able to mentally handle hiccup right now...so you find yourself avoiding?
