Lordy, another misguided drag racer!

Dude, take that beast down to Nurburgring and run a few laps with it (20 euros a lap, I hear). You'll forget all about drag racing.

Having been lucky enough to drive the Nürburgring, I couldn't agree more. :thumb:

Coolant leaks, eh? The nastiest one, and the hardest to find and fix, is the line that runs from the water pump behind the turbo. It looks and smells like a leaking water pump, but it ain't necessarily so. On some DSMs, installing a bigger turbo requires putting a dent in the pipe to clear the turbo, and that's where they can break. The last thing you want is for that to bust on you when you are running on boilerplate ice on Flying Volvo* stage at 100+. Sheesh...I can just imagine what would happen if that line bursts, spews onto the turbo, and you get a cloud of steam obscuring your windshield at 100 mph! Ain't rallying fun?

Actually I'm just going to do the TSD event and not the full-out one. I started building my car for the full-out version, but between getting jerked around by last minute rule changes, the ridiculously small restrictor I'd have to run, and the sheer expense, I decided to forget it. If the car ever gets reliable enough, I'll go run the Targa Newfoundland instead.

Anyways, no more coolant leaks from over on that side of the car. I currently appear to have coolant leaking out of the bottom of my battery and out of the inlet on my SMIC ROFL Obviously, that's quite absurd, but I haven't yet figured out how the coolant is getting to those 2 locations yet...

After watching Tim's (GreenGSX) video of his runs at Watkins, I'm seriously considering changing up my plans up for winter and work in some suspension/wheel improvements so can try out AutoX in '08 :) :dsm:

Once I get everything moved to CO I will finishing my build. It will go to CO fully built 2.3, stock head and stock turbo just til I get there, park it and put on the ported head with the 288 cams, big turbo, undecided yet, 65lbs/min at least though, and the new transmission in since it will be winter for 4 months after I move there LOL. Sucks I'm moving to the other side of Denver Luda. Gonna be moving to Thornton.

Dang hatting on the 1320! Haha jk
I am looking for a track down here in the bay area that will turn my thought around from the drag to road racing
There are 4 tracks in your area, all within 3 hours of where you live. Laguna Seca and Infineon (formerly Sears Point) are about an hour to 1.5 hours away from you. You can hit up a NASA event at either of those tracks for about $150-200 for a full day - at least that was what it cost a couple years ago when I lived out there. Any other track events (organized by some group other than NASA) at those two locations will likely run you $250-350 for a full day.

The best bang for the buck though (and probably a bit more fun) are Thunderhilll and Buttonwillow. T-hill is closer and a bit more expensive but is damned fun. B-willow is further (about 2.5-3 hours away but still damned fun and less expensive.

You have more options than any of us since you live in the bay area. Four high profile tracks within 3 hours of where you live. I'm lucky to have one not-so-high profile track in the whole state of Colorado, at least for now. Go out and take advantage, will you!!!

Close enough man. We'll have to get together, especially if you're thinking of doing track events out here. Most of the DSMers around here are strictly straight line guys, which is fine, but I can't get excited about that stuff and they aren't interested in doing road racing. I only really talk to a few local DSMers, unfortunately. It's a different scene out here.

DSM90AWD,
Are these videos online? If so can you share? Here is a link to a couple of my videos from this year.

cioc - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The video I have of Watkins Glen is weak though. It was my first time there and I drove like a complete wuss. That track is completely humbling to me but I can't wait to get back there next year.

Make an agreement with them that you will attend a "drag" event if they attend a "road-race" event. I bet half of them will get hooked on road racing and start de-modding their car to decrease that turbo lag that they are so familiar with.

Good idea there. I too am in the same boat around where I live. ALmost 100% of the DSMers here are all about straight line racing and dont even show any interest in road racing. I even went out to an AutoCross event earlier this year for one of my local sponsors in the summer and some of them (local DSM's) came out. They said it was pretty fun to watch, but not for them. I let one guy ride with me and he really enjoyed it, but said he didnt want to have to redo his mods to start road racing. Not sure what all he would really need to do, but he didnt seem eager to do so. Sad really, but it happens I guess. Some people I guess just do not have any interest in road racing.

I've had a few dsm'ers come out and watch me race locally, but the few who do try it are put into a pretty high class due to their mods and so they end up getting whooped on pretty badly by "lesser" cars. I guess their ego's can't take it, because most of them don't come back.

Really? Wow! That is great. I always had a passion of road racing, in fact it is what I enjoy doing best. I usually just hit the canyons here in my town. But running in a track would be great. So do I need a license or what are the requirments to run in these events? I am guessing I will need a helmet?

Kinda getting of topic now... oh well, its for the better

I feel the Road-race part of the DSM community is getting bigger, as it is pushed more, many of the New DSM'ers will learn early on how fun road-race/auto-x can be, and they will mod their car accordingly. Too many people think "MORE POWER" and it I hate it when people ask me how much HP does my car have or how fast is it in the 1/4. But then i get them to hope in, and power slide through a turn, and they crap their pants!

I agree with you there. More DSM'ers are coming out to AutoX events and other road racing events. Especially with the Evo's I have seen just around the area at local AutoCross events.

Thats funny about people asking you how fast your car can go in the 1/4. I cant tell you how many times we have been hauling the race car to an event and stop for fuel or food and people are always asking me how fast the car is and what is my best time. Or am I a "Drifter". I just try and explain I do not drag race or drift, I road race the car. They tend to have this blank look on their faces. I guess they think I am some Fast and Furious guy or something. No big deal, its funny actually. Most people just want to check the car out when we stop anyway.

^^^^ Exactly. That movie hurt the import scene more than it helped you know? Then they had to go and make 2 more of them. :notgood: :notgood:

The FnF movies did hurt us a lot, insurances rates as well haha.
I always thought road racing require a little bit more of driving skill than the 1320 but to each its own.
My dad was always more of a 1320 kind of guy he always own big muscle cars, 69 charger, camaros and when he saw that I was building my dsm he was very confuse on the pontetial it has.

Don’t even bring that up, you will have people arguing forever. I once brought that up on a local forum that is filled with a bunch of the v8 drag racing guys, holy crap is all i can say. From what they say, I would think you have to be a rocket scientist to race in a straight line. ROFL

1. New Roll Bar Padding
2. New Gauges
3. Repair or Buy a new front bumper (Track was wet, and spun out. No real damage just cracked)
4. Maybe a new Hood that will let out more engine heat. (Most likely will not be needed)
5. Fix right front fender flare were it cracked from spinning out. (Not to bad only about four inches long)
6. New race car hauler...(That count as a mod? :D)
7. New fixed back racing seat, and new seat mount. I'm 6'2 and it still sits a little low for me. (Greg your tall.)
8. Have the car dyno'd and tuned. (Spring time prep)
9. Basic winter car maintenance
10. Start work on the 2g race car.

Not to keep this off topic, but I must be scary or intimidating because I always see people looking at my car when I am heading someplace with it, but they never talk to me. As soon as they see me walking back to my truck they scatter :sosad:

LOL !!! ROFLLOL Maybe so man. I always seem to have people coming up just to check it out. Each event I go to, I meet other guys at a rest area on the Florida/Alabama state line and usually truck drivers will come over and check the car out. When we stop to get fuel, someone always pokes their head around inside to look and see whats going on.

p.s. - Maybe you should smile more !!! :D :D

And sorry Chris, I guess this was a little off topic.
