What Turbo is this? [Merged] Turbo ID Identification

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

eBay junk 16G with an unported 6cm2 MHI turbine housing from a 14B, and a MHI wastegate actuator as well. I'm surprised no one caught that one.

You normally have to shim the hell out of the actuator when using a MHI actuator on one of these turbos. The mounting stacks that are cast into the knockoff's compressor cover are almost 1/2" shorter than the ones on an MHI turbo. This makes it impossible to use a MHI actuator without shimming....the flapper will hang open constantly.

Your turbine housing looks to be in fine shape, along with the actuator....if you're just looking for a replacement turbo cartridge, PM me. I have more than a few nice rebuilt cartridges here that will drop right into that turbine housing and work with your existing actuator, saving you tons over buying a whole new turbo. I'd recommend a Small 16G.

yea it has play all over the place..and all the fins are bent....

jusmx141-how much for the small 16g

ok thanks
and dose any one thing this thing worth a rebuild or just trash it???
Absolute trash.

It's possible the knockoffs can be rebuilt using a pile of mixed-and-matched parts from various rebuild kits if they're in rebuildable condition. I can tell your compressor wheel has sustained damage, making this turbo not a good candidate for a rebuild.

PM sent regarding rebuilt replacement cartridge.

Im thinking about buying this but wanted to know which turbo it actually was.

thanks

Don't buy that turbo, it looks like it was pieced together and has a lot of wear and tear! I really like the zip tie holding the waste gate to the housing!

Not worth the money, but that's just my opinion.

Otherwise it looks to be a 50 trim.

Well what is a 50 trim??? All that is is the trim of the turbo. It looks like a 20g kind of. The ones i have seen are a little different(flat surface around the cold side) but that one is big enough to be in the 20g ball park. But like said above it looks pretty beat up. BTW your 16g is a 50 trim.

That's a 17C from a Syclone / Typhoon truck that someone has installed in a DSM bolt-on turbine housing.

I'm not sure why anyone would do that....the 17C isn't known for great efficiency. There are much better choices out there.

thanks! I was planning on maybe buying it after i got some feedback and sending it off for a rebuild
by one of the guys on this site.

I'd stay away from this turbo unless it's a HELL of a deal.

In this particular turbo, the 17C compressor is mated to a TD06 turbine to handle the volume of airflow a 4.3L V6 in the Syclone / Typhoon could dish out. The original turbine housing also has a T3 inlet and either a 8cm2 or 10cm2 internal volume, compared to our DSM-flanged 7cm2 housing. The 17C compressor is only rated at 550cfm, which is the same as a Evo III 16G.

At best, this turbo would be a very, very laggy Evo III 16G.

It looks to be a 14b compressor wheel......could it be off a starion or conquest??
See post 4. :D

also how much would this be worth? the person selling it is telling me its a 20g
He's either lying or truly has no idea what he's selling. At least you're making the effort to identify it before you get stuck with it.

I'd price it somewhere between worthless and $100, as long as the wastegate actuator works and the turbine housing isn't cracked.

I need to find some other people that has ever used this turbo.
They don't exist. Nobody ever intentionally built a laggy 16G.

I've seen a few 14B's that had 17C or 19C compressor swaps. Apparently the builders were going for a turbo that will juice as much as a Big 16G that still appeared to be a 14B from the outside....otherwise, you'd be better off with a 16G for the money spent in buying the wheel and machining the housings.

i just got a email from the seller......its a

Specs: GMC typhoon comp housing. evo iii hotside. td06 wheel

I suppose two out of three isn't bad....that's not an Evo III turbine housing, but he confirmed my 17C compressor / TD06 turbine identification.

Evo III turbine housings will only fit TD05H wheels and cannot be machined to accept a TD06 wheel because they are too thin.

13g. T25s are made by Garrett, so there is no TD0X designation for any of their turbos.
