What Turbo is this? [Merged] Turbo ID Identification

When I bought my car, I knew nothing about turbos. Unfortunately, the kid I bought the car from knew nothing about them either, and the guy he bought the car from told him the car had an EvoIII Big in it, so thats what he told me. As I started learning more about cars and turbos, I realized that for having an EvoIII Big, my car isn't moving as fast as it should be. So I actually took a look at the turbo and realized I'm looking at a stock housing. Someone I work with said that I could have a modified T25, with a bigger wheel and whatnot, but I don't think thats the case with this one.

What is this?

oh and also, the guy I work with told me that there are EvoIII Bigs in the stock housing, by swapped internals. Is that true?

All Evo III's are in a "stock" appearing housing.

hi just joined this forum to get some info, you guys seem to know what your on about
first up im from Australia and dont really have the same car as you guys i have a Mirage Cyborg AWD but thats besides the point.

i have 2 TD05's atm and want to know what one is best to use

form what i was reading in this thread they are both 14b's but is there any dif between them?

There are actually (4) different 14B part number possibilites:

49178-01010
49178-01030
49178-01400
49178-01410

None of which have any noticeable differences. The part numbers either have something to do with production date, type of center housing used, or I think even the 49178-01010's had a right-hand threaded compressor nut. Small differences that don't effect the turbo's performance.

When I got the car the ex-owner told me it had a 14b but if I do have a 14b then why is my housing different than the housing from the 14b shown in the picture below. I try to check if my housing says anything but it doesnt have anything written in it any idea of what turbo is it I know it must be stock b/### is not that big, could it be a 14b just with different housing I will post pictures later on of my turbo.

By the way I also need the turbo replaced since mine has shaft play in it and when ever I step on it, it smokes so if anyone of you guys have one for sale PM me I know this is not the classified sect. but since this thread is about my turbo thought I'll ask here. Thanks a lot.

okay i just read the post , if its 3 bolts on the turbine its a t25 housing, otherwise, im not sure, id have to actually see it....but that comp wheel/housing screams 14b

Have you done a boost leak test? That could rule out the smoke.

As a matter of fact no havent done boost leak, hope that will work since after it smokes it has a bad smell like some sort of carbon smell

your right it just might be it, because it also bogs out a little too, and it wasnt doing that before. I really hope thats it because I dont really want to put more money on this one since am saving for my GSX

I had some stuff apart on my motor tonight and saw this printed on the side of my turbo. The previous owner told me it was a 14b from a first gen. But I just looked at it a little closer tonight and saw tdo4hl? I checked the charts on vfaq and couldn't find a match. On a better note, there is no shaft play whatsoever.

Its from one of those JDM RVR minivan engines its not a 1g 13g but its similar. Its smaller than a 14b.

I saw that thread and noticed the turbo itself looks pretty much exactly the same. But there was no definite answer in that thread.

Its not an auto 13g those just say TD04 on the housing, and its not the 15g thats an HRC turbo made with a similar compressor housing. If you notice all the other threads they say it came on a "JDM" engine the common JDM engines are the RVR engines and those do come with a td04hl turbo whatever its from its smaller than a 14b and about the same as a 13g.
