What Turbo is this? [Merged] Turbo ID Identification

That turbo is an Evo 3 16g. Look up the compressor housing numbers. I know everyones going to argue about it being the wrong engine and whatnot. maybe those japanese guys swap turbos around too, who would have guessed.

49178-01520 = small 16g
49178-01420 = big 16g
49178-01450 = evo 1
49178-01460 = evo 2
49178-01470 = evo 3

i am confused about which turbo i have. i thought i bought a 14b but the numbers on the compressor are 49178-01420 which is the big 16g. the exhaust side is 78-11830. so which turbo do i have. is it a 14b with a 16g compressor cover?
thanks for the help

Im going to buy a car from this dealership that was traded in and it has an upgraded turbo. I looked at it and it seems about the same size as a t25. On the turbo i could see A/R 48. Anyone have any clue what turbo it could be ?

Look at your compressor blades. The 14b's blades are all the same size and the same length apart. The 16g's are staggered in pairs and spaced out a bit. Here are a few threads that should get the anwsers you need.

Here is a good picture of a 16's blade arrangement also.

awesome looks like i scored a big 16g for $150 . i guess im gonna rewire fuel pump tonight and install it tomorrow. if u look at my profile is there anything else i need to run the big 16g, because i was planning on running the 14b for a while. im pretty sure i will be safe at 14psi with rewired fuel pump but just making sure. thanks for the help.

You should be alright provided you keep the boost under 15 or 16. Anything higher than that, and you should start thinking larger injectors and S-AFC.

As it is, you need to keep an eye on your Injector Duty Cycle by way of a datalogger. Always run the highest octane gas you can find. Not sure what you've got in Arkansas, but 93 would be the minimum I would suggest.

Have fun w/ your new 'toy' :)

yeah i always fill up with 93 octane. thats the highest we have here. would it do any good to put that octane booster stuff in as well or just forget about it? i am going to wait and buy dsmlink when i have the money so i will not have datalogger for now. if i were to run 10-13psi would that help any or is that out of the turbo efficiency?

93 should be sufficient to support up to about 16 lbs of boost. No need to turn it down to 10-13 unless you're extra worried. Personally, I would run 14-15 lbs on that setup until you get DSMLink.

You might want to check out this link: http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclfuel.htm (scroll about halfway down the page).

According to this, you may be able to safely run up to 18 psi with only a fuel pump upgrade. However, I would err on the side of caution and keep it down to 14 or 15 for now, as I said.

No need for the octane booster stuff. Octane boosters don't do as much as you might think -- they are measured in "points", where 1 point equals 0.01 octane grade. So a bottle of 15 Point octane booster (the basic ones you buy at Autozone range anywhere from 10-15 points) would really only add .15 to the octane rating. This is okay if you are having problems w/ detonation due to low octane gas, but will not sufficiently raise your octane enough to support raising boost.

Hope that made sense. haha.

Good luck :)

Likely a T-28 variant of which any number of compressor wheels are used (T28, Big T28, T28 Killer). The most common being a straight T28 upgrade which supports ~300WHP (slightly less than a small 16G).

Might be worth it to track down the prior owner via CarFax VIN search to get a history of the car and what all has been done that was not documented :dsm:

Does anyone know how to tell a 14G from 16G? or a T-28 from a killer T-28? Is there a website or somewhere that I can find an ID guide?

I think you meant 14B instead of G but anyway to tell the difference between this and the 16G all you have to do is take off your intake pipe and look at the fins on the compressor wheel. If they are all the same height it's a 14B however if they alternate tall, short, tall, short then it's a 16G. Not sure about the T-28s i don't have any experience with those. Hopefully someone else can help.

49178-05200

it was supposed to be a 14b, but has the double fins like a 16g.

I'll have pictures up soon.

in laymans terms is this a big 16g, small 16g or an evo iii 16g?

also this turbo came without a wastegate...will the 14b wastegate suffice?

that is the small. dont cheap on the 14b wg either. get a external wg and the manifold, youll never go back to an internal again imo.
