That sounds like your answer there ^^^ ...if you're trying to turn the crank with that much slack in the belt, the cam gears wont turn till all the slack is taken up....thus having the affect of being off a tooth or 2 on your timing...I hope you didnt try to crank it TOO hard.

Another little hint: When you start to wrap the belt around the oil sprocket and crank, I like to rotate the oil pump sprocket a tooth counter-clockwise, then put the belt on, and rotate the oil pump sprocket clockwise, lining the timing mark back up. This will eliminate the slack from being on the non-tensioner side of the engine. Good luck!
 
I'll give it a try, think I might have been doing it backwards. Would that prevent the cams from moving?

Turning a DSM crank backward will often cause the crank to skip out of time.

However, I'm closing this half-month guess-fest for now.

When you've opened things up and determined how badly you've bent your valves, PM me and I'll let you post the story.
