I know man I couldn’t resist LOL. I think the entire forum is rooting for you on figuring this issue out and getting her on the road :rocks: :thumb: :)

I appreciate the hell out of it man. That's a nice way to think. Lol.

It's gonna drive soon. Soon as I get the replacement transmission where I want it, I'm gonna stab it in and drive this SOB.

Edit: because my brother in law has a lifted massive chevy duramax diesel with a built motor and a pte 62mm turbo that I need to lay the gap on. My sister constantly talks about his trucks like they’re fast and I wanna show her what’s up. Lol.

That’s the BEST LOL. I’ll never forget running into a duramax that wanted to play, we went from a 40 roll and a dig and I smoked him both times LOL, that was years ago on a good ole evo 3 16g/e85 stock motor set up LOL. After the dig run he was like “that things f***in quick man” he asked what I payed for it and I’m like $4500 he’s like damn I payed $45,000 LOL. He was cool we were just messin around, but yeah I’d say you’ll have a lot of fun in the talon once she’s on the streets :)

100% agreed. I've walked his tune only old duramax in my Edge, but this one outclasses the old Edge just a bit. The Talon should absolutely take him to gapplebees though. Motivation for sure. I'm playing the "hey we should go to the track together and see what they'll run, haha fun" game so it seems innocuous. Lol.

And stories like that is why I tell people the most fun you can possibly bolt to a dsm is a 16g! Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my fun with “big” turbos, but at the end of the day the 16g will always be my favorite.

I adored my 16G setup. Even on an auto, it was so much fun for a daily/street car. If I can ever have another DSM ever, I'm gonna go that route again. 16G, cyclone, creature comforts. Not gonna be the fastest, but a low 12 second AWD vehicle absolutely busts ass on the streets against much faster cars stoplight to stoplight.

Been trying to talk myself out of tossing a 16g on the rotted 1g I have and just driving the shit out of it with no ragrets while I make the Eclipse what I want it to be. I have so many parts I can’t talk myself out of it.

Keeping options open. Literally just curious what there even is out there.
I looked for minimum 1 hour every night for 3 years straight until i found my perfect shell. rust free clean title factory white 1998 mitsubishi eclipse gsx 5 speed. had to go all the way out to a little town in washington state. well worth the wait! youll find yours one day dont give up hope!

I mean not to negate your thoughts on it but how bad off is that shell really? Is it down south rusty where there’s some scaling here and there and is northerners would be like “this thing is real solid!”, or is it actually rotted through in various places?

It's not rusty. I'm sure someone up north would be thrilled with the condition of the underside and wheel arches. The problem is everything else on the car. There's something up with the wiring, and I just don't want to fight with it anymore. There's a leak coming from what appears to be the windshield that I have no clue how to seal(I still have to verify it by pulling the headliner completely off which I'm not thrilled about doing), the windows don't roll down, the headlights don't pop up and down due to a missing relay of some kind, the gauges don't work except the tach that I ran a wire to from the PTU, the knock sensor isn't reading at all either, not to mention the body is beat and banged up, and a million other things I'm not going to type out/that I'm forgetting.

It's just a bunch of small shit that makes a mountain of work, so the thought of just buying another shell that's got a straight body, nice paint, and everything in the interior working/functioning perfectly is just way too alluring.

But the way the DSM parts scene is looking, I'm not gonna be able to grab anything fairly priced. People can't read worth a f*ck, or follow basic instructions. So the few bites I got from the ad are like single line, shitty pictures with no details, or one dude sending me an offer of a racecar shell(that I specifically stated I didn't want in the ad). So this is all a moot point. I'll just keep plugging along on this pain in the ass shell and eventually it'll be done.

Check mine out, is it something you'd be interested in?

Okay so, full disclosure, I've been heavily hinting at buying something and I'll just go ahead and spill the beans.

It's a Galant VR4 shell in NC, however I ended up walking away. It was a fairly good deal, but man it's more of a project than my Talon. It's in pieces and needs massive reassembly just to get to the point of swapping powertrain. The original thought was "hell yeah, just swap my engine and trans in and go" but man, everythings been removed from the engine bay like the clutch master cylinder, both brake and clutch reservoirs, all the solenoids and everything off the firewall, the wiper motor/transmission/linkage, etc. No driveshaft, no a/c stuff(which is unique to the Galant VR4), no exhaust(also unique to GVR4) It's just way too much, so I walked away from it. I'm proud of myself for walking away before committing to ANOTHER project.

HOWEVER, there's good news in there. I'll take the money I was gonna invest in the Galant, and just throw it at the Talon to get it running sooner. I'm not thrilled at having to fight with the interior wiring and track down everything missing...but I've come this far. Sunken cost fallacy? Maybe. But it's close enough to run that I might as well just push through and get it running.

In the mean time I'm still gonna keep my eye out for the unicorn cherry shell that just needs a drivetrain.

Did it have good interior in it. The am still tryin to source one for my galant. And other stuff for it.

The interior was great except for the steering wheel and the drivers seat.

Honestly if I had a garage to keep it I’d still buy it. But for a one car driveway open to the elements and it’s about to be Florida summer, it’s not worth it. Like stapl3 says, keep focused.

Proud of you buddy. I've been there so many times and it's pretty hard to talk yourself out of something you know you can make great. I have 3 projects and my 4g swapped non turbo has been sitting and I swear I'm stealing more parts from it than putting on. You did yourself a favor if anything.

Thank you brother. It was definitely extremely hard to talk myself out of, but it was the right call.

I bought a quality legitimate floor jack today and a transmission jack adapter. Let's get this in gear! Time to get this SOB running. I'm probably gonna just do little stuff here and there until the first week of April(my birthday week, I have all of it off of work!), and then try to bust ass getting it ironed out and driving. Goal is mechanically sound/quality tune, and driving. From there I can fight with the niggling shit like gauges not working and windows/headlights.

Going this thursday to middle AL to pick up another spare transmission. Seems overkill to me if I'm honest, but I also know that it's getting harder and harder to find good manual transmissions, and I don't wanna be stuck with no spares if/when this one grenades.

So yeah, I'll have my 90 I got from Central FL, this ones a 91 trans, and then I'll have my noisy/possibly bad one too.

The other upside to having spare transmissions, is I'm gonna absolutely shoot for the moon on this green. Not gonna be scared to just send it, and see what she'll make. :D

Genuine opinions needed, should I bother getting TWO spare transmissions or just get the one from Central FL? I’m starting to second guess if I need to spend an extra $500 just for a spare trans when I’ll have this one that just needs some bearings replaced in addition to the good one that I’m getting from FL.

What say you DSMTuners? Roast me. Go ahead and grab it? Or just keep one spare on me?

Unless you're trying to break John Force records out there, I'd say 1 extra would be plenty. 2 seems like overkill.

Thanks guys. I feel the same way so I’m gonna pass on the trans in AL. Plus honestly it looks like it sat outside for a couple years.

My helicoil kits came today so I can repair the stripped threads on my “bad” trans case. Gonna disassemble it eventually and then order whatever is bad. Gonna depend on you guys a lot because I’ll have no idea what I’m looking at or what’s bad vs what’s good. But that’s gonna come way later. Gonna get the car running first.

Also: the floor jack I bought is hilariously big. It’s a 3 ton SUV model so apparently that means it needs to be the size of two jacks and weigh(literally according to the label) 106lbs.
