Well, I have been thinking about my transmission so I reached out to Tim Zimmer to get his thoughts.

He's pretty sure the transmission is screwed. Starting and idling a transmission without fluid basically completely f*cks the needle bearings and a bunch of other things. And with how it sounds, his exact words were "That's called bad. Sounds f*cking horrible".

Not gonna lie, I'm heartbroken right now. I'm so angry at myself for not double-checking the fluids(previous owner swore up and down he filled everything with fluids), which could've prevented all this.

I'm gonna tear it down and see what I find. But if it's damaged, that's game over for me gents. I cannot wait 1.5+ years for gears, and by then who knows what bearings and shims and etc will even still be available. Even if I got it rebuilt now it's damn near impossible. I can't spend another $2k+ on a stock rebuild.

IDK. This f*cking sucks though. I have no clue where to go from here.

Hmm. That blows, I'd let you borrow a used transmission if I had one but all I have are N/T transmissions.

I'd tear it down before making any crazy decisions though. If you only idled, the gears may not be screwed but the bearings and races for sure. But it's all assumptions and theories until you open that thing up!

I actually know a guy with a 1G AWD that has a "built" transmission, and it's just been sitting at the shop for years. I sort of lost contact with him when I deleted Facepoop, but I know where he's at if you get to that point.

EDIT: go check your messages! :D

Alright, I deleted all the FS ads. I just have to move my time table back significantly. The poor car has been so abused and abandoned that it's trying its best.

I took the rear cover off the transmission for what I assume is 5th gear? And there was no metal or silvery substance anywhere, and from what little I could see of the inside gears, the gears and synchros look brand freakin' new. I think I'll send this transmission out and have someone who knows these transmissions inspect it and tell me what it needs, and maybe throw a 4 spyder in it. Basically have it built. In the meantime I'll throw a used unit in it so the car can drive and be broken in. That way I can full send this pig.

Still annoyed, but eh. Adapt and overcome I guess. I just really...really hope I'm done spending multiple thousands of dollars on this thing after the transmission is done.

Good news i keep updating parts and over 6 years thousands have been spent but mu build is closer to having all the parts i really need for my goals and enjoyment.

I was coming here to try and talk you out of selling it. Sometimes these cars become a time and financial burden its hard to move forward. One thing Im so glad I did was never sell my car or all my DSM parts even after not driving it for nearly 10 years. I recently picked up a new talon, and it has lit the DSM fire in my heart again. Im going to get my old girl up and running now after enjoying the feel of driving another Talon again.

We dont play this game for anything other then the passion. Why else would we spend thousands of dollars and hours of blood, sweat and tears on a car that in the end isnt worth much at all? Just know that someday, you'll be driving around, windows down and turbo whistlin having the time of your life. And you will be happy you didnt give up!

If anyone has a badass built non-dog box transmission you wanna let me make payments on and/or work out a partial trade for my box, hit me up via PM.

Would really love a Shep stage 4 or something with a 4 spider diff.

Did you ever think of looking for 2g manual trans. And get boosted fab 2g manual into 1g chassis bracket.
I am glad your not giving up on car. I saw the post forsale. And was like he can’t sell this yet.
Save some money and just keep collecting parts for it.
Project cars for this reason. Take time to build and then driving them feels like greatest accomplishment ever!!!

You need different axles too don’t you? I had a friend who put a 2G GST trans in his 1G GST but can’t remember what axles he used.

I think you might be right. I just remember seeing the parts on boost fab website.

Awd it's the same splines. Fwd depends on year. 93 up used larger inner splines. If you had a 93 94 fwd you could use a 2g fwd trans. If you have an earlier 90 to 92 fwd then yes you need different inner cups at a minimum.
Anybody who says all 90 to 94 fwd axles are the same is wrong.
CAPS or ASA show it.

Are the lengths the same too? You’ve got me tempted and thinking.

You just use whatever appropriate 1g axles as I stated above.

Have you tried to idle this thing with fluid in it? Or if it's on the ground take it apart? You have nothing to lose at this point.

I added fluid to it and the sound was still present. It may have been a tiny bit muffled but that may have been wishful thinking too. It wasn’t a noticeable difference either way.

If I’m honest here I’ve been exceedingly tempted to just throw it back together and see what happens. Maybe it was the TOB or clutch making the noise or maybe it was something else. I’d just hate to pull the trans again.

The transmission is currently removed from the car.

I would have put back in for now. Just to drive the car couple times and Put about 100 miles on it and drop fluid out of trans and inspected it then. For metal and all. If it looks bad then. Pull it back out and just keep searching for used trans or rebuilt one someone has Laying around.

I say throw it in, fill it up with the cheapest fluid you can find for it and run it through the gears and what not a few times and if it seems ok fill it with whatever fluid you prefer and roll with it and see what happens. Don’t feel too bad, a buddy of mine did the same thing with his 1g a while back but he didn’t get lucky.

See what's going on i remember this happens to someone he wasn't do lucky the gear set was trashed. Not enough gear oil on a new transmission.

Screw it. Y’all have convinced me, I’m gonna stab this one in and drive it for a little while and see what happens.

I’ll get the used transmission I inevitably buy sent out and rebuilt so it’s shiny and new and ready to go when/if this one fails.

Torqued the 5th gear cover down, or at least attempted to.

Three of the bolts pulled threads out with them. I was hoping it was just dirt/debris/dried anti-seize but alas. One of them wouldn't even register in in/lbs it's so gone.

That's the 5th gear cover, and the trans mount itself that all has stripped bolts from a 1/2" air impact being ugga dugga'd on the bolts. If these outside bolts are ungodly tight, the internals of this transmission are probably a ticking time bomb even if it didn't make a noise.

I did what I could and I'm pretty sure it won't leak...but yeah. This transmission, whether it still makes noise or not, is not destined long for this world. I'll probably save money and have this one be the candidate that gets the Neat gearset. It deserves to be fixed, loved, and made into an utter bad-ass.

Had a part come up for sale that I’ve wanted for a very long time. I had one back in the day and loved it. Stoked to have another one!

Pics when I get it, of course. Been fighting another sickness off though so no progress on the DSM.

Well folks, I’m starting to lose motivation on the old girl here. I’m not selling it and no one needs to sad react, but honestly I think I may put the dummy axles I have back in the front and assemble it enough to roll, and park it with a car cover on it for awhile. Maybe I’ll get slapped with motivation and drive again but for now I’m just lacking.

I think you overestimated the simplicity of getting this car back on the road. It was in rough shape and maybe should have been overlooked/parted as you can get a good 1g for 5 6 7k. I also think 90% of it was you were blinded by it being previously owned by AMS, a company that sponsored it or whatever then threw it to the curb when it broke and their interest was lost. Was it even their car, or an employees or a regular customers with lots of coin? Also, the engine and trans should have been pulled out on day one and the rest gone through, then put in the good drivetrain. You spent a lot of coin and time replacing trivial shit.

Anyways, when cars sit they turn to shit. Why don't you just get a good used gearbox and a act2600 and then drive it? You're that far away from it moving and too deep in now to pull the plug. We'd all help you here and there as we have and I'll happily tune the thing if you get it going.

That said, let me get them black seats :crackhead scratch:

You’re not wrong. But part of it was less the AMS thing and more that the previous owner unintentionally was a little misleading. I thought a ton of things were better off than they were. Just missing a few things, and could go.

Absolutely agree though I massively underestimated it. Problem is I don’t have a cherry picker, an engine stand, or anywhere that I can do major stuff like pulling the engine and trans and doing a full resto.

The end result will most likely be me buying a better shell and just transferring the important bits. If I’m honest.

Also: I’ve already got a good southbend clutch kit for it, brand new. Just need a good trans and all the other interior shit. And tuning it? I actually am looking forward to doing that myself. It’s just getting to that point.
