Hello everyone! I just purchased my 1996 Eclipse GST a few months ago, had some issues with a few different things. Most recent was car was smoking and running very uneasy, so I decided to pull the engine. I am going to do a full engine rebuild-ish, I bought new wisco heads, still looking at the rods I want, if there’s anything anyone thinks I should buy and upgrade I would love help! Trying to push more power but not an insane amount seeing how I want this to be more of a daily but not quite. Thank you guys!

I was hoping you started out with it in position after you took the gear off. Double check is no big deal.
I did, I made sure of it after I took off the gear and put it back on, and then checked again when I put on the hydraulic tensioner.

Only problem was I don’t know exact how many times I spun the engine, it was about 7-10.

If you know it's in phase, no reason to double check. If for some reason you aren't understanding now is the time to ask.

That doesnt matter it will only line up every 6 turns. So you had to have turned it a multiple of 6. If all 5 marks lined up, that's when you check the phase. If you took that gear off and put it back on with the screwdriver in the hole then did not move the gear when you put the belt on its in phase. When I say move I mean a full turn.

Surprise surprise, things don’t go smoothly. My turbo feed line has broken. Completely snapping half and bent the other side, so it’s fine I wanted to upgrade to a steel braided line anyways after hearing they were so much better. Where can I get one? And hopefully shipped in soon.

I don’t know where this hose goes. I’ve got the rest of the engine done and ready. All belts back on, pulleys, tensioners, coolant, hoses, air system. All that I could think of. If you guys tell me other wise, I’ll put oil and coolant in and fire her up. If I need to do anything before I start it, let me know please. My new motor mount comes in tomorrow and then I’m good for that. So so very excited!!!!!

I just got a 97 GST and it’s been an adventure..!! When it did run it was a fast little car, love that turbo pull

Oh yeah! It’s such a joy, I absolutely love this car to death. First ever project car but man is it fun. I’ve absolutely loved working on it and will continue too.
You got any mods yet?? Mines up on Jack stands and blocks of wood for a timing belt change, and needs a new tensioner arm and pulleys.. this thing is so low it’s hard to get in and out..!! Love it, my sled… and I’m 6’7” tall..!!

No sadly not yet, she needs to run before any mods 😂 , only mods are lowering springs and bigger sway bar. Mines also on jacks right now, I just finished the timing set up with everyone helping me out in this thread, I also bought a new head and installed that. I want to do mods but I need it reliable and driving before any of that.

I don’t know where this hose goes.

Blow off valve line? Does it come from the intake manifold?

No, it’s from under the battery, I think he’s right about washer fluid line, I took the hood off.

Last thing, was going to start her up after I put coolant in, but I was flushing it with water first, turns out I have a leak on the right side running down my timing belt, any idea what it is?

Here’s the video.

A couple of things came up to mind :

- From one of engine mount bracket bolts. 7 bolt block need sealant on one of the engine mount bracket bolts due to one bolt hole passes through into to the block coolant passage.
- Water pump is not sealed well.
- the cylinder head freeze plug has a leak that one behind the cam gears.
- Head gasket sealing issue.

Most likely to me is the water pump. Any bolts wouldn't drip that bad. Sorry kid. You're going to have to drain it and take that belt off again. Been there, done that.

This will be easier. Line up all the marks first. Then put the pin i.ln the tensioner. If you really want to go the extra mile get a paint marker and mark the belt and a tooth on each sprocket and put a T on the top of the belt between the cams. Easy to put it back on exactly where it was.

Since you're in there already, you need to address the bolt on the motor mount if you didn't. Also this time add water first. If something leaks you didnt have it all together

So of course, me being new to this, i knew I’d likely forget something. Took off the belts and everything, i forgot the bottom bolt on the water pump. 😐 it was wide open, surprise surprise, i out the bolt on, filled up the radiator and no leaks. 😂 got it all off in about 5 mins, definitely won’t take me that short to do it all again.

I commend you. You're really doing great. So many would have given up, or at least become impatient. This isn't a small job, especially for a beginner.

And a big shout out to the guys who have been walking you through this, taking time to check in and not check out. This site is the next best thing to having an awesome next door neighbor.

Bad news gents. :( she started up, but would not stay running, it died and I had to start it like 5 times, so I got out to look at it and this is what I was left with. :( almost locked me engine. I can’t tell if thats mixed coolant and oil or just because both are on the ground it was mixed.

Retrace your steps. Likely you have something disconnected. In the first pic I see a hose clamp on what looks to be the lower radiator hose and it's in the middle of the hose. Go look for obvious stuff. That isn't that much fluid in the grand scheme of things but both the oil system and the water systems will pump it out really quickly if you left a hose disconnected/loose.

Ok, I will double check what I can. It turns out one bolt on this new head, since it’s from a newer car, has a bolt that went to something. It was shooting out oil but there’s still another spot, this isn’t all. I had my sister watch, she said it was really shooting out from somewhere around the transmission. Any hoses there you guys think I should check first?

Ok, I fixed the issue. Since this is a 97 head, it had a bolt that hooked up something with oil, I was looking at it and oil was shooting out. I put a bolt in, tightened it down and no more oil leaked out. Now, I have to fix the idle issue which I think is fuel injector related, I am going to take them out and clean them the best I can, is there a certain order for these I should know about or anything?

That first pic is the turbo oil feed location (stock location on on 1g's). Looks like its plugged with an exhaust stud, which isn't the same thread size/pitch.

It’s the right thread, but definitely not length. What size should I replace it with? That is what I figured out was causing the leak, thank you.

Hold up. Show us what you did. Are you talking about the spot you circled? That's an oil galley and it's very important you don't block it.

It’s for a different head tho? How do I stop it from shooting out if I have nothing that goes to that hole?

In that picture is what I did, I put a bolt in there because it shoots out oil and I don’t have anything that connects to it.

Just show us what you used. You use a bolt too long you'll block the galley where it turns 90 degrees.
Additionally there are galley plugs in the head. Are they all present on the ends?
