What should I do about the rear window antenna? [Merged 8-8] diversity

This sounds like a newby question to me, so that's where it's going.
I'm getting ready to paint my car. I found a new hatch to replace my existing one due to rust issues. The new hatch has the antenna in the window option. I'm considering shaving the fender antenna and just using the window antenna.

Here are my questions:
Did some of the 2g's come with both the window antenna and the standard antenna?
How well does the window antenna work on it's own?

I never heard of an antenna in the hatch window option before. Is it aftermarket?

Maybe it wasn't considered an "option", but I don't think it's after-market. My car has a rubber plug in the hole where the wire from the new hatch needs to go. It looks like the car is ready for the wiring to be hooked up, but it just wasn't used on mine.

The GST/X high end cars with the infinity sound system have the hatch glass antenna. The antenna is used in conjunction with the normal wire whip/power antenna. The glass antenna sucks, without the normal antenna you will get more static then signal.

When my father and I did the body work on my brother's car we shaved the antenna from the rear quarter panel. We purchased a rear-hatch mounted one from Dakota Digital and it sucked bad. All you got was static and only like 1 country station came in. No other stations did and we hate country . Better off with quarter panel antenna.

ya... whoever had my car before me wanted to do some hardcore street racing or just loved truckers because there was another antenna on the other rear panel as the radio antenna...maybe to listen for cops...looks soo tacky.

The dual antennae are part of the "FM Diversity" scheme from the GSX. There were two antenna leads, one normal and one puny, and two sockets on the factory radio. The puny one is for the glass antenna, and the normal one is for the functional antenna.
Your success with a glass-mount antenna will depend on how far you are from the broadcasting towers and their output wattage. At their best, they're mediocre.

I would like to add a little more experience to this, we have a GMC Yukon with a TV built into the overhead console. There is a VHS, DVD, and a TV tuner. The TV tuner is run off of a window antenna like you are speaking of. Trust me when I tell you that this thing is HORRIBLE. We get almost no reception with it. Even the strongest of signals come across fuzzy. Best of luck to you.

My GSX has the FM Diversity system. The motor on the retractable antenna died (so it stayed down). The system is *supposed* to use the antenna with the stronger signal. Whichever antenna that was (either the Retractable antenna that wasn't extended out, or the glass antenna) all it picked up was static... For comparison, with the antenna extended out in the same area, I can get clear sound.

I personally wouldn't trade the retractable antenna for the glass antenna. Your best bet, jb talons, is to test both antennas seperately first (before making your choice). Try driving around with the glass antenna, going behind buildings and such .

I'm not sure if this is aftermarket related or what. The guy who installed my system/alarm/all electronic goodies has left the shop where I got everything installed, and I don't trust the shop to go back so I'm pretty much on my own. It is located at the back of the roof on the passenger side. It has a clip attatched to it which would indicate it is from the factory, but again, who knows. My sunroof has stopped working so that was my first guess, but I have no clue or can see where this thing would plug into. Please observe pix and let me know if it looks familiar. Thanks.

That looks like an antenna plug for the radio.

It's the connection for the "Diversity Antenna", the second antenna on the glass. Nothing to do with the sunroof.

Ok, sweet. Well, I shaved off my stock antenna, so I'm assuming I have to use this to keep my fm/am static free. Another question though, does it matter where I stick this thing? I can either keep it "upstairs" behind the headliner, or run it "downstairs" into the rear seat panels... not a stereo guy so I wouldn't know which area is best, or will I have to plug in my radio and experiment?

I have a viper alarm system, can't remember the model number. If this does beong to the alarm is there something this should be connecting into?

It's the "FM diversity" antenna. It's a secondary antenna and you don't use it if you have an aftermarket stereo.

I have an aftermarket stereo, so, if that doesn't need it, then do you think casperfast is right in saying that it might belong to my alarm?

"Linger"? It doesn't "linger" anywhere, it plugs into the antenna wire that goes up to your head unit. Stock heads have two antenna sockets. Factory, those without two two sockets rectify this with a Y-connector. No, it doesn't matter how it's routed.

As most of you know...2g GST/GSX came with the infinity "FM diversity" package.

You have your sometimes unpredictable power (whip) antenna, and the almost completely worthless rear hatch window antenna.

When replacing the factory radio (head-unit) (receiver) You lose the socket (plug-in) for the window antenna and it is no longer functional.

My question: Is it possible to join the rear window antenna wire with the power (whip) antenna wire?

If not. What have others done with there rear window antenna after installing an aftermarket radio (head-unit) (receiver).

I know my stock spyder antenna works pretty well and hooks right into my jvc so picking up one of the power antennas might be an option and they aren't terribly expensive, otherwise there are some options for stealth antennas that are used in updated restorations which can go under paneling and can be fit to your desire.

I say fix your power antenna. Mine gets stuck about once a year - extract, clean, oil, retract, fixed. If it's busted, replace it with another, or perhaps a S2000 antenna.

My diversity antenna is unused.

Somebody was throwing around the idea of wiring the diversity antenna into their key-less transceiver for perhaps added range, but I'm not too sure of what ever came of that.

Some one told me that was used for the blue tooth so you could get a good signal on your cell, i also have one on my rear window.

No, DSMs aren't built with any phone antenna consideration. Bluetooth didn't exist before DSMs dried up.
