Tire discussion and choices [Merged 11-7] which size what tires tiretire

Untrue. I had oversize tires put on my daughters toyota on purpose, so she would get a little better gas mileage, from a prominent tire dealer in the area. They never said a word. I calculated that the tires we put on would make her speedometer off about 3 MPH @ 65mph.

You asked for them, the dealer didn't just put them on without letting you know. When you told them you wanted a larger size than whats on from the factory you supplied a verbal waiver, and if you look on the receipt, which dealers keep for years, it will have the tire size printed right on there, which should have been followed by something stating that the owner requested a different tire size from what is oem on that rim for that vehicle. You can do whatever you please with tire sizes, but it's the owners obligation to adjust the mph accordingly. Blaming the dealer for putting on the wrong tire size is completely opposite from telling them to put on a different tire size and failing to adjust the mph accordingly. Its still falls under the owners obligations to properly operate and maintain a vehicle, and if that means the total mileage will be incorrect, that is odometer fraud.

ok so i currently have tires that are 225/55R17. and i want to keep them casue they are new and i want to switch them to a rim where the tires in it are currently 205/40R17.
Would i be able to do that or are my tires to big?

No, that wouldn't be possible. The tires are too wide for your other rims.
I know you! You're on the psychic friends forum.

To the OP. It is likely that the tires will fit the rims, as long as the rims are between 6-8 inches in width. Whether or not they will fit your car depends on the offset. 225/55/17 tires are huge, though. If you have the size right, thats the largest diameter I've ever heard of on a DSM. I would recommend ditching them for something of the proper size. Use a tire size calculator like this one to keep you choice close to stock diameter:

wret, could you explain this more? I've always been told that there is a certain tire width that you should get for a specific rim (and it can vary a bit). I've never heard of that big of a variance in width (I've heard of say a 220 vs. the 225). Or is there a website that explains this?

“The wheel should be no less than 70% of the tire's sectional width, and ideally would be almost as wide as the tire. If you want wider tires, consider getting wider rims as well.”
Wheel Offset Info

If the wheel is less than 70% of the tire width then the sidewalls will have too much curvature outward to the thread. This causes too much sidewall flex and looks funny (like the 225 series on my 1991 TSIs stock wheels.)

If the wheel is wider than the tire width the sidewalls will be straight and will lose much of the sidewall flex that should be a part of your suspension.

No, that wouldn't be possible. The tires are too wide for your other rims.
I believe you're making some assumptions:
1. the 205 width tire is mounted on a narrow wheel (6").
2. the 225 width tire won't fit on said narrow wheel.

In actuality a 225/55/17 tire will properly fit any wheel that a 205/40/17 tire will. Strangely, 205/40/17s are approved for 7-8 inch wheels while 225/55/17's are approved for 6-8, but none of this matters without confirming the real wheel width.

Rules of thumb may assist in selecting tire for optimum performance but ultimately the manufacturer’s specs should be consulted.

Now there's some good advice. TireRack.com is a good source of manufacturer’s specs for wheel size. They give an acceptable range of wheel widths and the size used for the measurements.

For example: Tire Specs for Michelin Pilot Sport A/S shows the specs for my 225/50/ZR16 tires. The recommended wheel width range is 6 to 8 inches and a 7 inch wheel was used for the measurements. I went with the upper end of the range to compromise some comfort for less sidewall flex when cornering.

i found a really good deal on some 17" rims and want to know what size tires would fit my 2g. the rim size is 17x7 with 38mm offset. any suggestions on what to use.?

Hi, I asked this question a while ago, but I guess it was missed...

Does anyone know about the amount of work to get a 245 to fit with +40 offset wheels?

And the thought of a 245/50 16 for a tire having better grip of the line for a FWD car?

Thanks Folks!!

I have a 91 gst lowered with a sportline kit. Would 17x7 wheels with an offset of 35 and 215/45 tires be okay? Any rubbing or clearance issues?

Thanks man. Hey by the way I saw that you live in Arlington, its on your profile. Would you happen to know if Alamo Motorsport, off Cooper street, does any kind of machine work? Cylinder bore, heads port and polish ect.? Let me know. Thanks again.

No ! I use HnH machine shop Johnny is the man there they are off 121 and carson. If your interested let me know he is knows the 4g63 and his prices wont kill your pocket book. Where did you see me live at

Okay good info. Thanks man. Oh and every time someone post a thread or reply on the forums it also displays their member info. User ID, location, vehicle ect.. So dont worry Im not stalking you. As a matter of fact, I bought my 91 Gs-T from Arlington. But thanks again for the info.

i am looking to put some 225/45/17 Kumho Ecsta AST tires on Drag DR-19 17x7.55 rims. the car is mainly a daily driver, i may do some autocross next year, but its a VERY slim chance. would these tires fit and give a comfortable ride? i believe they will look better/perform better than 16" but be more comfortable than 18". the sidewall for the tires is 3.99" and there is only a .22" overall diameter change of the tire vs. the stock tire size. this results in an actual speed of 70.62mph when the speedometer shows 70.

i think i have done my research and have found a good combonation price under $1000

thanks all

:talon:

i do not know the offsets. the rims are listed to fit at discounttire.com. i have done some research on their site and have gotten tires from them before and everything checks out.

the overall tire width is 1.18 inches wider than stock. i have read on this forum that 225s fit flush on 17x7.5" rims so it seems the will fit. the overall wheel diameter doesnt change much. i will go look at the car and see what kind of room i have in the wheel wells for the turning radius of the wider wheels.

anyone else have any input?

You need to find out the offset. It is the most important part of making the wheel fit nicely. You shouldn't have a problem with 225 on a 7.5 in rim. Anywhere from a 38 to 45 offset would work. An offset of 40 worked perfect for me on a 8.5 in rim with a 235/40 tire.

Also, if your gunna spend money on new wheels and tires, you might as well try and fit as much rubber under there as you can.

well 225s are the widest and cheapest tires that are from a brand i trust. i would like to go with either 16 or 17 inch rims. i will see what i can do about finding the offsets.

any idea where to find them?

the Drag wheels have a 45mm offset
will this cause the wheels to stick out or rub on the wheel well?

also

i found Voxx rims that are the same style as the Drag wheels but they offer a 17x7 (40mm offset) or 16x7 (38mm offset)
would 225s fit on the 7 in rims or should i go with 215s or 205s?
