Tire discussion and choices [Merged 11-7] which size what tires tiretire

I know i'm kind of all over the board here but shit, I just found these guys.
They're top of the board in the Ultra High Performance Summer tires and they're ALSO rated for mud and snow! THEY'RE ALSO CHEAPER!!!!

I kinda had my heart set on the ASX's but hell if the UHP's are better than the ASX's and I can save some cash why the hell not....

Eh....honestly for the price I'd go with either the AST's or the ASX's (AST's are cheaper I believe). They're great tires for cheap.

kuhmo....i have never had them my brother has them on his GC impreza, he says they are ok, the tread wore a little quick and they are pretty terrible in the snow(even on a subaru)

i personally have sumitomo's 235/50/17 on my 97gsx they are AWESOME in the rain and dry, i haven't tried them in the snow yet. they list for 130 a piece... i got a deal, but they are really sweet tires.

also i had yokohama es100's on my subaru... sickest gripping tire ive ever had...but they lasted like 15.000 miles... oh well

Eh....honestly for the price I'd go with either the AST's or the ASX's (AST's are cheaper I believe). They're great tires for cheap.

But the UHPs are better in almost every way. The ASXs handle slightly better in the snow, thats it. (I have had the ASXs before and the tread-life was not very good))

I have searched, but just want to make sure I do not pick a combination that will not work.

I am looking to get a new set of wheels/tires. I have narrowed it down to two choices and would like to confirm that one or both will fit with no modifications (i.e. spacers or fender rolling). Here are the specs of my car:

1. My car is a:
2g DSM

2. My wheel size is:
Diameter: 17"
Width: 8"
Offset: +35mm or +40mm

3. My current or future suspension height will be lowered:
current - stock
future - One to 1.5 inches

4. If suspension is lowered:
no research done on camber adjustments.

5. Rear fender flange rolling:
I would rather not roll the fenders.

6. My driving style is:
Street and Autocross.

7. I have searched for and read the FAQ's, Tech Articles, and threads on wheel and tire fitment:
Yes, but I just need someone with experience to validate my choices.

The two choices I am looking at are:

OZ Ultraleggera: 17x8 +40mm offset with Kumho Ecsta MX in 245/40/17
5Zigen FN01R-C: 17x8 +35mm offset with Falken Azenis RT-615 in 225/45/17 or 235/40/17

From what I have been reading, they should both fit, but will the Falken 235/40's fit with a +35mm offset?

I noticed that you mentioned autocross in your criteria. Any chance that you're considering a brake upgrade in the near future? Larger calipers may not like the 35mm offset. It's just something you may want to consider.

Either of these will work at stock height. At lowered height they may or may not tuck depending on the camber.

OZ Ultraleggera: 17x8 +40mm offset with Kumho Ecsta MX in 245/40/17
5Zigen FN01R-C: 17x8 +35mm offset with Falken Azenis RT-615 in 225/45/17 or 235/40/17

PS: The 35mm offsets will leave more room than the 40mm as it moves the wheel further towards the fender. You still need to check with a template for overall diameter clearance.

I have not done any autocross, yet. I plan to try it out when the weather gets nicer and I have a good set of tiers. I do not have major plans for brakes at the moment, just new rotors and better pads.

im looking at these tires......225/40ZR18....will they be ok?

yea i think should be fine bc we are 114.3 bolt pattern..also as long your not puttin 22"s under a dsm...you should be fine with 18 x 7.5!! show some pics@!!!

18's will work. Personally, I wouldn't go with anything bigger than 17.

I agree. I rock 17x8 +35 w/235/45r17:cool:

I have a set of 18x7.5 rims (Racing Hart Evolution C2) and I run a 225/35ZR18. I was looking at getting new tires for them for the summer and I called up tirerack.com and asked what tires they'd recommend and if I remember correctly, the guy said anything bigger than a 40 will probably start to rub, especially if the car is lowered any. So I'd look into it if you plan on getting 40's vs. 30's or 35's. Only difference is the heighth of the tire (from where it sits on the rim to where the tread is). It's known as the AR, or aspect ratio, of the tire.

Other than that, the 18's look great on the car and definitly fill out the wheel well. Just wondering, what rims did you get?

Nice wheels man....show us the end result when you have them on your car as well!!

I'd stay away from anything under a 40 series personally. Unless you don't know what rough roads or potholes are.

Nice wheels! Definitly show us the end result. :thumb:

As for the Kumho ECSTA SPT's, I've read they're really good tires for the money. They're the ones I was planning on getting for my 18's.

I just put on Tein Flex coilovers which end up being, when set at Tein's specs, a 1.9" drop all around (or close to it...). As for rubbing issues, I really give you a definite yes or no. All I can go off is what I've been told and that is what I stated before. Yes, if you go smaller than a 40 AR, you will probably feel the road more...aka pot holes, bumps, etc. I live in PA and have a very stiff suspension on my car so I feel the road A LOT (darn PA roads! :notgood: ). It could be different in Wisconsin.

I'll throw up two images of my car with the 18's and 225/35ZR18 tires on them (they're Yokohama Parada's). This way you can see what they look like.

I don't know how big of a difference it is from 35 to 40 but I would think that 40 would be getting close.

awesome pics......looks very clean:thumb:

yeah i was totally going to lower my car and hopefully get the tires/rims on soon........then this weekend we got about 2ft of snow and their saying more for the end of this week
:notgood:
thats wisconsin for ya

That sucks. I've got my winter wheels/tires on now (typical GST 5 spokes) and can't wait to get the other rims out! If I were you I'd wait until it got a bit warmer out to put those new rims on. Although, I'm the type of person that wouldn't want them getting dirty or scratched because of ice or salt or something.

And yet I'm jealous that you got the snow because I really want to go boarding somewhere...

how wide of a tire can you put on a 2g gst wheel? i was thinking a 225/50-16, can i go any wider?
