I am selling my Frank level 3 and going with a hx40 instead. I am going to run the bolt on dsm bep housing. I have to choose between the 8 blade or the 6 blade. How much more does the 6 blade flow over the 8 blade.

As long as it's actually rebuilt and an 8-blade is what you're looking for, then sure.

but I don't know if a 6 blade would be better in the long run or not.I will run at 25 psi for now though. I plan to run a max of 35-40psi later down the road. If the 6 blade doesn't flow much more I'm going with the 8 blade since it should spool quicker. Would a 8 blade be better for me? I'm an auto as well. Will be running hks 272's with the turbo.

8-blade will have the best spool, 6-blade the most airflow. You have to form your decision based on what you're looking for.

I generally refer anyone looking for custom machine work that is beyond my capabilities to Austin. I'm not set up to do custom machining, nor do I have the time to take on anything other than standard rebuilds.

Curious why he is ruling out the 7 blade HX40. i love mine 23 psi and 45 lb a min and the turbo isnt even breaking a sweat. full boost by 4100, holds steady pressure while the airflow just doesn't stop climbing i hope to push 40psi when the beehives and L19s come into play just my $.02 best of both worlds. flows almost as much if not as much as the 6 blade, spools as fast as the 8 blade. or close to it. its kinda the in-between awesomeness for the boost addict.

You have the exact same setup as my buddy Stryker....and oddly enough, logging the exact same amount of airflow at the same boost level.

I know the airflow ramps up quickly beyond 25psi- we tried running 28psi for a while and it would overdraw the 2G MAS at the onset of boost, so there's an additional 5 lb/min within just 5psi.

I traded my old pte 5027e(which you rebuilt aha) for some $$$ and a td05 18g with a ported 7cm hotside and 14b compressor cover machined to fit the wheel. How much is the 14b cover holding me back from the 18g's full potential?
The only ones I could find are on ebay, like this one
Also, I have a spare big 16g that's ported and clipped by burschur racing but needs a rebuild, how would the two turbos(18g&16g) compare, with the 18g using the 14b cover and the 18g cover.

None, really. There are 20G's out there using the same TD05H-style cover. I'm sure a larger cover would free up some minute airflow, but would it be a noticeable difference? Probably not. Even the 68HTA used a TD05H-style cover and worked great.

Also, I have a spare big 16g that's ported and clipped by burschur racing but needs a rebuild, how would the two turbos(18g&16g) compare, with the 18g using the 14b cover and the 18g cover.

Well one's a Big 16G and the other's an 18G. That's how they'd compare.

Look at the airflow results for either compressor wheel and see where they stand. There really aren't that many 18G users out there, but it's a fine turbo nonetheless.

I don't believe Buschur ever did custom turbo builds- your 16G was likely sold by Buschur but built by Forced Performance.

Wow...that shaft is shot. Check the journals- they're probably just as worn. If that's the case, price a new CHRA.

Yeah I believe the center section is shot as well. I tore the whole thing down and noticed where the bearings sit is scored pretty bad. There was also no snap rings inside behind the bearings.

i just had a shop put new bearings and a wheel on my holset (8-blade 56mm hx35). i didnt use you and I'm STILL kicking myself.

i FINALLY got the turbo back with new bearings and a BAE replacement wheel. I asked about balancing and the rebuilder said that the individual parts are pre-balanced so it should be fine. He has no machine to balance the wheel assembly.

I am now VERYYY unsure and i am contemplating sending the turbo to you or the recommended shop down here in VA to be balanced and everything checked out.

opinions? i think i should have been notified he didnt have a way to balance PRIOR to the job, but thats what you get when a "buddy" gives you a "buddy" to do a job for you.

I'm trying not to blow this thing twice in a row.

As long as the BAE wheel is balanced and the turbo wasn't previously balanced as a rotating assembly you should be fine. Newer Holsets with a 12-point 10mm locknut are balanced individually....older Holsets with a 6-point 13mm locknut are balanced as a rotating assembly.

Some of these repair shops run directly to aftermarket parts for Holsets when OEM parts are quite affordable. You can often buy new Genuine takeoff HX35 compressors from diesel shops for a great price, and Holset has the cheapest Genuine parts kits of any manufacturer.

No idea...a good portion of their mid-sized performance lineup is changing over to ball bearing MHI-based cartridges, and I have zero knowledge of the wheel specs or how they'd perform on various applications.

Ok so I took some parts to a friend in nc and he gave me a 16g he bought for my gas. He boght it from k.o. Speed a.k.a. Dna motoring.

I was wondering if it would be alright to take the chra out of my ,14b spare and use it in the 16g using the 14b turbine with the 16g compressor wheel?

Is the BEP .70 A/R T3 turbine housing with 3" V-band outlet going to be enough to max out the 7 Blade HX-35 compressor or do I need to look at something larger? That's all I have found as of now. According to a reputable turbo guru the .63 A/R T3 4 bolt I have is choking out up top...

It will outflow the .63 Garrett by a good bit. We know Bullseye's .70 T3 design is effective due to it's results with HX40 and S362/366 users....but is it enough for the smaller HX35 turbine to max out? Truly unsure.

Perhaps another option if you're tired of changing housings is to track down a HY35 with it's single-scroll factory 9cm turbine housing. You'd have to fabricate some type of o2 housing, but there's a good chance you can score a good usable HY35 core for the same price as a new Bullseye housing. The HY35 has already been proven to 134mph trap speeds in heavy cars, and has also been proven 550-600whp despite having a smaller turbine wheel than the HX35.

I also have a 4an feed for it from the ofh with no restrictor but I have balance shafts still so I was told I don't need a restrictor. Is this correct?

I feel like the 2mm bigger exducer should help it flow, and the bigger inducer should give the turbine a little more leverage, and possibly spool quicker yet... dunnot, but It would be nice . I know my WH1C turbine shares an identicle shaft to the HY, so it would work.

Parts are not interchangeable between MHI and knockoff turbos. You can use the turbine housing, but that is all.

I'm not a fan of all-rubber drain hoses due to the probability of kinks. The braided reinforced line is much more rigid.

The rest of the setup is functional but a bit hokey- $100+ for a drain line kit with steel pipe fittings? I do like that sweet oil pan fitting, though.

I've often wondered this myself, but the proof is in the trap speeds....I know two guys personally who have trapped 134 with the HY35, and there's only one bolt-on HX35 with a 130mph trap speed- the others are in the 120's.

It would definitely work, but I'd be afraid of upsetting that magical spool/airflow ratio that the HY has using the factory turbine....then again, the HX40/HE351 compressor on a clipped HX35 turbine wheel in the 9cm HY35 turbine housing may be the ultimate undiscovered setup!

Depends whether you want to put the time in marketing it as freshly-rebuilt or unload it as-is and let it be someone else's problem. I'd probably list it as-is and see if you get any bites; the fresh rebuild will likely be a selling point but in no way would it make the turbo would drastically more. In other words you'd get back what you'd have in the rebuild, but you're not going to make a serious killing one way versus the other.
