Has anyone tried it before? In the pic it basically looks like a typical knockoff EvoIII 16g.

This is what the description states: "THAT ALTHOUGH IT HAS A CHEAPER PRICE TAG IT RETAINS THE ORIGINAL BIG 16G PERFORMANCE AND QUALITY SO WE SPENT MONTHS SEARCHING FOR ONE. WE TESTED NUMEROUS VERSIONS OF THESE TURBO'S BEFORE FINDING ONE THAT ACHIEVED THE LEVEL OF QUALITY WE WERE LOOKING FOR WHILE STILL FITTING INTO THE "BUDGET" PRICE."

This really doesn't say if it's an authentic MHI 16g. Are they selling China knockoffs or are they legit? I sent an email but haven't gotten a response yet.

eBay Motors: ECLIPSE TALON LASER DSM TDO5 BIG 16G TURBO (item 270205708747 end time Jan-28-08 13:21:45 PST)

No thats not a MHI 16g. You can tell my the adjustable actuator and no stamping on the compressor cover. People have been having success with them lately so I guess punishment feels good enough about them to sell them.

Hmm... This sounds interesting... Punishment has good reviews as a vendor here... :thumb:

There are tons of knockoff 16G's sold everyday by various vendors....maybe Punishment just wanted to jump on the bandwagon.

It makes me wonder because they don't list any knockoff 16G's on their website. Perhaps they're too embarrassed! :shhh:

This is too funny. I actually thought someone was just posing as Punishment Racing on Ebay which is kinda why I posted this thread too. I also checked their website and all their 16g's are MHI in the $500 and up price range. Maybe they thought no one here would find their Ebay ads. :notgood:

If this was actually approved by them.. I would buy one.. Maybe that is what they are hoping!

Excellent questions guys, I'll try to answer them all, if I miss anyone send me a pm and I'll get you an answer asap.

Basicly it's no secret we have played around with various budget parts over the last year, some parts we have excellent luck with and others the quality just wasnt there. It's also no secret dsmers have been trying some of the ebay parts with some succes. Do a quick search on any of the dsm forums and you will find ebay parts account for a huge amount of the discussion's going on. So what we decided was to try and take some of the guess work out of things, we went out and did our own testing, found the parts that worked and the parts that didnt.

The parts you see on ebay are there for a reason, we aren't trying to hide anything, if I was I wouldn't have added our website address to the listing. If we are going to carry a line of "ebay" type parts what better place to have them in the market than on ebay. It also helps us reach out to a new group of customer's, you would be surprised how many emails we are getting from people who are new to the dsm world, and dont visit the forums. If they prove to be popular we will be adding a section to our site that is dedicated to budget parts.

So to end this book:p these parts aren't for everybody, some people want to stick to the brand name's other's would prefer something easier on the wallet. We will continue to put together some of the baddest manifolds o2 housing's and turbo kit's around, but for us to ignore 60-70% of the dsmer's out there who are buying the majority of their parts on ebay doesnt make sense.

I have one of these on my 1g. It's been on there for about 2 to 3 months now. I didn't buy it off Punishment Racing though, I bought it with a print out of the previous owner showing the same add on ebay. The turbo is working fine and has no shaft play in any direction. Actually It's for sale since I have a super 16g thats going on the car. I'm not saying that the one I have is 100% written in stone from Tim, but I don't see any reason for the previous owner to lie about it.

GREAT INFO!... So, can you explain the "limited Warranty"? Also, was the 16G the only one you have had success with? I am interested to try it out on my 7 bolt, my turbo is on it's way out and don't want to install the big snail until the 6bolt is installed.

You <b>DO</b> realize a "Super 16G" is basically a Small 16G with a different compressor cover, right? It's actually <i>smaller</i> than the turbo you're taking off.

I am pretty sure blknspoolin is correct.... 10cm...that seems a little pointless.

Hey punishment,
Although I do agree that it makes a lot of sense to market and sell to the other DSMers out there, wouldn't it be advantagous to at least display the same information on your eBay ads as if one of our skeptical dsmtuner boys here would ask of you? Just being honest, but if I didn't know your shop's awesome reputation, I would have just dismissed it as another eBay "jdmworld" type of auction/vendor. Hope that helps you guys out a bit.

Damn, I was hoping for it to be an authentic MHI for that price because I'm a cheap f*ck. I'll just save up some more for the real deal (only $200 more anyway), just don't wanna take the chance on a Ebay turbo especially since I've taken this car from nothing to something. Thanks for chiming in Punishment.

I didn't realize that, but thanks.. I don't think I'll miss the evo III 16g at all... by the way, there's a reason my sig. is "all stock" @ 32 psi ;)

So far the only turbo we have been able to find a consistant quality level has been this
16g, the t3 work is still ongoing but so far we havent found anything good enough I'd be willing to sell. Either the performance is inadequate or the quality hasnt been the best.

The warranty will be 6 months against defect, although I will be flexiable with dsmtuners members as they tend to go through the proper install procedures. It's the ebay customers who don't do research or bother to learn the correct way to do things that make me a bit nervous about the warranty.

Your 100% correct. I need to work on the auction's wording to put more info about us in there. I'll refine the auctions over time, I'm a bit rusty with the whole ebay scene. Things have changed a ton since we were selling o2 housings on there over 5 years ago.

A "Super 16G" is a turbo that Hahn made originally as part of their 420A (and other) turbo kits that uses a Small 16G CHRA paired to a 10cm2 T3 turbine housing (similar to the one that came stock on Syclone/Typhoon 17C turbos) and a larger compressor housing that resembles the one used on the 20G.

I've had great luck with the turbo that I have, which like I said above, is believed to be the one in question. I had it set around 14 to 15 psi (I use a Greddy metric boost gauge and I'm seeing .9 bar). All 4 tires break loose in 1st gear (wet or dry) and I spin them through the end of 2nd gear with anything more then moister on the ground. The turbo comes on with little linear response and hits nice for a small turbo. I'd recommend it.

Are there rebuild kits available for this turbo?

I was looking at your ebay ad also, and intially thought somebody was ripping off your name since you do have a good reputation.

One other thing, although the picture of the chick is hot and got my attention. I would get rid of it because it make you ad look a little questionable: http://http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270207352176&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_RCRX_Pr4_PcY_BIN_IT&refitem=270205708747&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&usedrule1=CrossSell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget

The knockoff 16G's use the same parts kits as a standard TD05H Mistu turbo, but the journal bearings are different. A knockoff 16G will use Garrett T3 journal bearings because the companies beefed up the shafts due to constant turbine shaft breakage when they were first introduced.
