Didn’t take the talon to work. Forgot I’ve been driving the shit out of it and only put like 7.5 gallons in it.

Cars need fuel. Race cars need fuel especially. Lol. I think that low fuel light works great. Anyway. I’ll get logs later today or on another day. Doh.

Not being coy here but does anyone see a problem here? Turns out the fuel gauge isn’t a liar and the tank is legitimately half full. But the fuel pump is rusty AF and there’s only one o-ring at the top.

Why would it act like it was super low fuel? Bad fuel pump?

Ordered an Aeromotive stealth 340. Because this one is so rusty and I don’t know if it’s a 190 or 255, and there’s just too many questions honestly. So yeah, now I know what’s gonna be in there and it’s room for me to grow a bit.

I’m admittedly concerned as to why it was acting like it was low on fuel though. I’m probably gonna end up changing injectors too but I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

You are missing the hat that goes on top of the o-ring. Also... Did you put that pump in? Looks like it had been exposed to a lot of water then left to sit.

This could explain a lot of your fuel/ tuning issues. What does the inside of the tank look like? My tank is spotless and I still had crap in my 3 year old injectors on a running car with a perfectly clean fuel lab 818 paper filter.

I would recommend a new pump and sock, filter and having your injectors cleaned and flow tested. Along with a flush of the lines.

This could explain your rich/ lean mess.

I knew there was something missing! Now to try to find it for purchase…

But I did not put this pump in. Previous owner did and then the car sat with an empty tank for like a decade.

I’ll plan to get the injectors cleaned and flowed in that case. New pump, sock, and etc is on the way. I honestly may go with new feed lines as well because I hate the current ones and the OEM fittings are still there.

Would be great if this was the smoking gun.

A New hat comes in the walbro install kits... But that's 33 bucks from STM for 1 part needed.
You sure it isn't wedged in the assembly? There is also a comment on the Aeromotive 340 that they had to modify the rubber spacer that goes on the bottom of the pump and the kit didn't come with one.

I’ve got a spare rubber spacer. And I’ll check the assembly again later to see if I can find it.

If not they’re $15 on eBay. The install kit.

I can also tell you that when going through the pre tune checklist on the 190 I couldn't get past 65psi at the regulator, the fuel pump sounded like it was going to grenade. Swapped to the 255 and went to 80 no issues or change in sound from the pump. It was rewired when I got the car.

Sadly injector cleaning and a 255 only netted me about 10% more fuel across the board and didn't go lean at 22 PSI.

My 750s only flow like 650s according to what ECMlink wants. When tested on a bench they flowed 756cc at 13.5v at 43.5 psi after cleaning. 🤷‍♂️

Fuel issues suck I am fine with my setup but am limited to 23 psi on pump cause I hit 37lbs/min of airflow and 78-79%IDC

Honestly sounds similar to when I tested this pump. It just gave up the ghost at almost 70. 80’s was out of the question.

If this works and fixes everything I’m gonna be happy but bummed because I have a feeling I’ll need a retune everywhere.

Found it! I pulled the sending unit out and it was laying right there on the bottom of the tank. Not sure if it fell out after I took the pump out, or if its been sitting there for who knows how long. The pump didn't seem exactly snug in there, so I'm kind of inclined to believe that it was missing. Either way, glad I don't need to source another one.

Got a new gasket for the sending unit too. So, kinda excited to see how all this works out.

I think I'm gonna go with a -8AN PTFE tank to filter kit. I read somewhere PTFE runs a tiny bit smaller than regular AN, so I figured it would even out. Plus, it would be actual locking and sealing fuel line rated for E85 instead of just some regular parts store fuel hose held onto the sending unit outlet with a hose clamp. Sound good?

That's what I did with mine. I did bulkhead fittings for the Feed and return and got rid of the stock corroded lines, it's a fairly easy modification and you can get rid of the line bottle neck coming out of the sending unit.

If your fuel pump looks that bad also, I'd make damn sure the inside of the tank is clean and clear.

Nice. Yeah @Imback mentioned "PFTE had an I.D of .312 and a 6an hose .344"

Good luck. Your tune will be way off with more fuel from the pump and clean injectors with a good spray pattern.

I was in the 620us for deadtime and before I had my injectors cleaned. Got down to 450 after cleaning but was lean every where else and had to add 12% more fuel to correct that mess and then settled at 270us deadtime.

I am not a fan of the FIC 750s and when talking with FIC they had some issues with the low-z and are old tech so they are dropping them all and banking on high-z

They claim that you can run injectors "high-z" way over the size of your setup and have little to no issues like they see trying to dial in low-z injectors. I am tempted to get a set of 1200 High-z and test this theory as I plan on going to the new FP LOPE Green that flows up to 57lbs.

If you're thinking high-z FICs is going to align your globals exactly to calculated, three or four of us can prove otherwise. All of us on the 1200s have global nearer 950.
Some have to add 70-100uS deadtime on top of what the FIC sheet says, others (like me) have 0 added deadtime.

Also, I came from fic low 750s as well and my max VE was about 118 using straight calculation. Correcting that for 100 and it would have had me with a global compensation of 630 or 640.

I wonder if all of us are running a fuelab afpr LOL

I have an old Aeromotive A1000. Wouldn't be surprised if it needs a new diaphragm but that'll come later.

NGL, I do hope this changes the tune significantly and makes it need a lot less idiotic of Global/deadtimes. I don't legitimately know what I'd do if I put this in, and then all I had to do was set global to stapl3's original recommendation and the car needed absolutely minimal VE table work.

But even if nothing changes, I'm glad I changed the pump. The rest of the tank looks absolutely mint. I have no idea how it does, but it does. I was expecting similar rust. Why would the pump rust this bad, but nothing else? I need to get the injectors cleaned and flowed but have run out of cash(trying to pay for something else right now). But, I'll make it a priority next check.

Thanks for the advice and comments fellas! Keep 'em coming!

Ordered an Aeromotive stealth 340.
Dude it's almost 2025 what are you doing? That pump became obsolete a dozen years ago. I maxed out a 37r with boost into the 50s, using e85 and stock fuel lines on a single 450 almost a decade ago. I still use 450s to this day. Currently, a Walbro 450 is 100usd shipped and a Walbro 525 is like 10 bucks more. There is NO reason to buy a 340 - which insult to injury happens to cost more than both of those.

I know it might sound lame but I’m squeamish about cutting up my oem sending unit.

However if this one fails or has issues I’m gonna cut it up and throw a hellcat 535 pump at it.

Wanted to put this here for posterity's sake, because it was super useful information.

Ditch the o-ring and spacer and go down to a Toyota dealership and order part number: 23239-21010. It's an improvement in every sense of the word, and it shouldn't cost more than two bucks.

@99gst_racer made this post awhile back, and I just wanted to post it here in my build thread too. Because I'm gonna use this same toyota part on my new fuel pump instead of the stock o-ring and spacer hat deal. Very curious how it works out as I need a new o-ring anyway. I'll take pictures and stuff too, to make sure those pictures don't go anywhere. Great info!

Forgot to include pictures. I know everyone's seen a fuel pump, but can't resist that shiny new part photo op. We'll see how much "modification" this thing requires. It's the exact same dimensions as the Walbro that came out, the only thing I can really see is the fuel pump sock is physically bigger. Either way, I'll post up how it goes. Depending on how tired I am or if I get a late call, I may try to install it after I get off work tomorrow morning.
