I feel like I'm trolling this thread but I couldn't resist, someone is actually running this manifold on a 4g63 too. I didn't do this but an acquaintance of a DSM buddy did and it had me cracking up... LOL

After welding for a few years and seeing this I don't have anything really bad to say. While the welds may not look good, as long as it got good penetration all around it's good. Looks like it was done with flux maybe. Also it's more than just welding, cutting, grinding, fitment, etc etc etc all goes hand and hand. I would love to build one.

This last one is to give yall an idea of the kind of screwed up metal i have to weld on alot. Real good practice in my opinion on getting skills down.
And hres one structural weld for a conveyor frame, wish i could take more pics but phones arent allowed in the plant anymore

I know the welds are horrid! This was the first time I tried to really fabricate something. Used my old mans MIG thats probably older than I am. Dont even know what unit it is, I do know its a Hobart though.

Do you double dip with SS? Or did you do a weld then go over it again?
Does stainless weld different or better when you back purge or do you not notice a difference during the welding process?

i dont, all my welds are single pass. back when i was a newb at this i was trying a 3 pass weld, fusion, filler and cap. what a waste of time that was. single pass all day long now. its all in the technique. im not even the best at this yet hence the practice welds. ive got a log manifold coming up which will be for my buddy. IMO it will also be practice for my upcoming t4 top mount im gonna be doing that will need my best welding. im trying to hone it in with the sch pipe welding right now before i get to it.

as for for back purging question..... ive done practice welds while back purging and while not back purging. it seems that the non back purged metal always gets better penetration and seems to fill a little better then when back purging. i just need to practice more with the correct bevel, heat and amount of rod im dipping and ill start getting the perfect capped weld with a nice bead on the inside.

I want my welds to have that color!

I may be getting a really really expensive welder to play with but IDK any of this high tech stuff on how to get awesome welds like that. Gases and filler. I just got some whatever to do my downpipe and I thought that came out nice LOL.

its all in the gas coverage

Mike, as always, your work is phenomenal. That's why I have so much of it.

pretty sure it called a champagne nozzle, my local welding shop told me bout it and i told them to order one for me.

I can finally post in this thread!

I just sent up my first welder last night and ran some beads. Its the Eastwood MIG 175 with the spool gun.

I went out and got a small container of tri-mix gas and gave it a whirl. This is a SS pipe with E316 MIG wire

I have only welded a few times with a harbor freight flux welder before. These are my first time using MIG. The first shot is my first few beads. The second photo is when when it started feeling pretty good.
