Which turbo will be sufficient for consistent 11 second times? I've recently decided on a big 16g, but will that be big enough to run 11s with supporting mods and decent tuning? Remember, this is for a budget street car, so any one purchase over $1k is tough. A big 16g will run about $700-900, which is about $300-400 less than the larger alternatives.

Of course, I'll need lots of practice to run these times, but, I just want to make sure that it's possible before the money is spent.

I say go with an Evo III 16g turbo. Those turbo's have more potential than a 16g and you can come closer to your hp range with it. i ran one and loved it! Now i have an evo III big 16g and love that more! :D

The Small 16G will cost less and spool a nanosecond faster.
The Evo 3 16G will have a hair more top end.

Personally, I like the Small 16G - mainly for price. You should be able to grab one for ~$100 shipped if you're patient.

Another vote for the EVOIII. The power and 1/4 times in my profile were on a small 16G. When my turbo finally died I switched to a Big 16G and I couldnt believe how much harder the car pulled. When I took it to get tuned on a 26psi spike settling to 22-23 psi the car made 330whp and 330tq on a mustang dyno compared the to 288whp on 20psi from the small 16G.

I haven't seen any for around that cheap at all. The turbo I have been looking at is on the classifieds for 400 and comes with a 2g o2 housing and a few lines. Its an evo 3 16g with 4k miles on it.
Like I said, if you're patient..

Switched to a Big 16G or an Evo 3 16G? Either way there's only small flow difference between the small and the Big/Evo.

I am looking for some advice on what turbo I should run. I recently purchased a Precision 6169RSP ball-bearing turbo that was "brand new" from a reputable seller on eBay. Long story short, after the car ran for 30min the shaft play was so bad it destroyed itself. So, while I deal with the seller and try to get my money back (doubtful but worth a shot), I'm curious as to what turbo you guys would recommend to me.

I'll be sticking with pump gas (93-94) for now but plan to move to E-85+ next year along with bigger injectors, etc. The car is not a daily driver. I'm shooting for 500hp with the current mod list.

  • 98 GSX with a 6 bolt block and 7 bolt head
  • Mitsu crank & bearings
  • Eagle rods
  • Aries 8.5:1 pistons
  • Balance shaft eliminated

  • Ferrea valves
  • HKS 272 cams with HKS adj cam gears
  • Clevite custom thrust bearings
  • 2g head ported 1mm over
  • 2g intake & throttle body
  • top mount exhaust manifold T3 (could switch to a T4 flange if necessary)
  • Precision 46mm wastegate
  • Greddy Profec-B Spec 2 boost controller
  • HKS SSQ bov
  • 3.5" downpipe to 3" straight pipe HKS Carbon-Ti exhaust

I would get a hx 40 with the set up you have, im looking for another set up as well, pte dual ball bearing sounds good. But not for 1000 bucks, holset, for me or a pte for long term goals. I would look around and see what you find in your budget many threads here on the topic.

holset (hx 40) IMO is as reliable (probably more so) than precision, and about half the price. you can find them for under 500 bucks rebuilt in the classifieds or about 700 rebuilt on DSMgraveyard

If you are trying to make big numbers for under $1000 a holset is the way to go. Unless you can find a good deal on a used turbo that isnt falling apart. I have under $500 in my hx35 so far and that includes the bep housing and a rebuild. You will have to have a o2 housing fabbed up for it but you should still come in under $1000.

Ok, sounds like everyone is recommending Holset so far. I've read a lot about them and seems like people really like them especially around dsmtuners.

Just for the record, the Precision 6169RSP that I bought is rated to 650hp and costs $800.

I'll look into the Hx35 and Hx40. Any more suggestions or opinions?

EDIT:

I found an Hx50 about 15min from me for $600. Is that too big? Spool time, etc?

Here's a somewhat recent pic of the engine bay with the Precision turbo installed (before it died). Since this photo a new radiator has been installed and relocated behind the intercooler as it wasn't staying cooled. Also, ignore the line running across the turbo as that's been relocated too. The bay is a lot cleaner now. I'm showing these pics so you can have an idea of what would fit... I believe there's enough room to fit mostly anything in my budget...

EDIT 2:

This auto-merge feature is handy but it's also annoying :) Anyhow, I also found a hx35 that's local to me for $350 off a Dodge Cummins. I found this thread and it's really helpful. Thanks!

FP HTA GT3582r (or GT3586r). Ball bearings will bring boost coming into play sooner in the RPMs (with relation to engine load) and thereby more torque. Ball bearing CHRA's are also less prone to failure as long as you have clean oil going into them.

You'll have to spend more money, but you'll be so happy you did.

HC1/ HX35 for quicker spool starts spooling under 4000 max power around 500HP. HX40 will get around 20 PSI.@ 4500 RPM and up to apx.650WHP. HX52 5500 RPM starts spooling up and up around 850 HP. look at Mrpeeps setup and for hx35 and mindblowing03 for hx40

This is some really helpful info. mindblowin93's setup is very similar to mine so it helps to see what he's running. Thanks a lot. The hx40 is sounding better by the minute.

Anyone know this guy? He's selling 8 blade hx40s.

If your wanting more of a 600hp range the hx40 with BEP .70 or 14 or 16 cm twinscroll. You won't be getting much boost till 4500 rpm and to get into the 600hp range your intake manifold will be your next liability. And you need to get some colder air to that turbo inlet

No i dont know him but it looks like you call him and see what questions he can answer for you.

Yep. I'm going to. Just curious and a little skeptical of everyone selling turbos after my experience recently. :)

Yes. The intake manifold and throttle body are gonna have to be upgraded eventually. I've been dumping a lot of $$$ into the car lately to get it up. It's been down for about 1.5 years so it needed a lot of love.

The classified ad I linked above says that he sells "T3 exhaust housings Garret style 4 bolt 2.5” outlet, we start with a .48 A/R that gets bored out to fit the HX35 for an additional $140" - the Precision turbo I had was a .70 and I'd like to stick close to that.

I don't know anything about Holset and what I need to buy so I'll need to read up on the bazillion Holset threads.

T3 exhaust housings Garret style 4 bolt 2.5" outlet ...

If you go with one of these housings on a Holset I'll be interested in how it works out for you.

If you think of it while talking to the guy, ask him if they are Garrett castings, or cast by somebody else.
