That is a great time on the small 16g congrats, I ran a 11.98 @ 118 in my 2g fwd a couple years ago with enough boost you might be able to get there. I am heading out on friday in my 1g never raced this car hoping for 11s on my hx35, CANT WAIT!!!!!!

Ya I know his car but a lot different than my setup his was a fully gutted 1g built for the drags. Mine is a daily driven 2g with stock motor @ 240,000 miles so atleast for 2g's I think I'm good LOL. His build is what originally inspired me to stick the small 16g out longer and im glad I have.

That was with an AUTOMATIC. I asked with a manual.

I think it was 9.54 by Gary Marsh back in about 2001 or 2002 timeframe. My best on the 5spd was 9.79 I believe.

Kevin

thank you kevin. That's a 1/4mi time i was always wondering for the fwd manual setups.

Kevin do you happen to know if that time was done on 24.5" tires or 26". I was just wondering because the honda in my area that run the "sport fwd class" are in the 8 second times. They run 24.5-9-13 and are limited to a 67mm turbo.

Hit the track today for the first time in my gst passes where on street tires 13.7 @ 106 60ft 2.5 ,spun through 3rd mods in profile

I think any FWD setup should include slicks as one of the first few mods for drag racing. My first DSM was a 90 Laser. With only a MBC at 15 psi on 91 octane, slicks, and 100lb of weight removed, it went 13.8@96 mph and the clutch slipped in third on the shift. It probably would have been in the 13.6 range. It was cutting 1.9x 60' times. If you got that 2.5 60' down to a 1.9, you will be running mid 12s or better.

I had my Slicks but problem was I forgot my tuner lug nuts for my Slicks , so I ran it on streets

What kind of 5 speed trans setups are you guys running on the quick 1g's?

Just stock ones?
2g 5 speed?
AWD trans?

I'm in the process of putting together a stock appearing 1g, would like to know what a good strong 1g FWD trans setup is. I have done a ton of searching and haven't exactly been impressed with what I have found. Everyone says to just buy a shep/tre/jack's/etc, but this is a budget car. So I guess my question would be:

What is the best bang for your buck transmission option? The car started life as an N/A and still has the N/A 5 speed.

IMHO the best Bang-for-your-Buck would be a turbo FWD trans and have the pinion cross shaft in the front diff welded to the diff case. The NA trans is weaker, mostly because it uses ball bearings on the shaft ends, while the turbo trans uses tapered roller bearings. Welding the cross shaft will keep the front diff from exploding from wheelhop.

my car has the ball bearing in it now, because apparently in order to install the awd quaife lsd in it, it's the only way it would fit in 90 fwd trans.

Yeah, diff bearings are fine either way. FYI the FWD turbo trans came with roller bearings supporting the front diff while the AWD had ball bearings supporting the front diff. I've used and abused both types of bearings on my FWD car and they both seem to hold up just fine.

The bearings that support the input and output shafts are a different story. All turbo cars got tapered roller bearings on the shafts while the NT got ball bearings on the shafts.

Ok, thanks for the replies guys! The reason I ask about the AWD trans is because of what I found in this thread:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drivetrain-tech/274677-awd-trans-fwd-application.html

In there, it sounds like a guy should be able to take an AWD trans, weld the center diff, and remove the output shaft and the VC to run it as a FWD, then use the balance shaft inspection plug to block off the output shaft passage.

You can use the same seal/plug used for the balance shaft ellimination when plugging off the hole in the trans once you remove the output shaft. You can also leave out the VCU.

Jack

Is doing that going to be any stronger than just using a FWD trans and welding the cross shaft like you had mentioned? (I know nothing about transmissions) But it sounds like it would essentially accomplish the same thing but much simpler?

Are the gears any stronger in an AWD? I have read that they are, so they must be because everything you read on the internet is true right? ROFL

Anyways, thanks so much for some good advice :hellyeah:

Okay! After going over my time slip by my avatar. I'm trapping over 100mph, why I'm I still in the 15's. I see other members trapping 100 doing low 14- 13's. I know my 60 foot is bad but what else can it be?
I know driver skills play a part but I don't think that's it. Some how my car keeps bogging off the line after the act street lite flywheel install. Even with two step I still bog after 15mph.

your 60' is really bad, 2.741, on Road tyres you should be able to get 2.3-2.4 on drag radials you should be able to get that down to 2.0-2.2 an on slicks as low as 1.5's Get it down to 2.4 and you will see low 14's.

Are you spinning or bogging off the line?
What tyres are you running?
What tyre pressure?

I hit up the track last friday on my 8 blade hx35. My best run of the night was a 12.4 @ 115 on 26psi. That was a 1.8 60ft on slicks. Bad thing is I blew my headgasket that run so trying to get car back together before next races on sept 7. I am installing hks 272s hoping that will get me over the hump into the 11s.

Nice times. What wheels are tires are you on? Also, what other mods/gas do you have/are using? When I had the 8 blade hx35 I went 10.9@133 so there's more in that turbo for you.

I agree with RichardB on this, your main issue is that 60' time. There's a fine line between bog and spin with these cars, and slipping the clutch properly is key. I was able to get consistent 2.2-2.23 60' times on street tires after A LOT of practice at the track, even with the lighter flywheel. I never had a 2-step though, just worked the clutch. I also dropped the air pressure a bit like RichardB is most likely suggesting for you to do as well. Stick with it and you'll get those times down for sure.

**OR** you could just buy the slicks I have for sale and with a little practice get into the 1.8 range...just sayin'

I am on 15" 24.5x8 slicks. The wheels are called drag lite I think. running e85. I actually tried to turn up the boost but 26psi was the most it would boost. I am thinking do to only a 6psi spring in the wastegate. Cant wait to get back out there with 272s and 30psi!!
