so went to the track for the first time on my new engine and guess what couldnt hook up with a disapointing 15.4 at 88mph.and that was my best time they only got worse !!!! wheel hop bad. car ran good but its so slow! I was pulling 2.3 60ft. on drag radials. i hate my car tonight.

Sounds like you could use a couple tips. First what air pressure are you running in the DR's at the track? What DR's are you using? If you are getting wheel hop you need to either launch the car at a lower RPM, or get a stiffer spring / shock setup. Another thing you could try would be to run the car at a lower boost level to try and combat the wheel hop. Sounds like a standard virgin run. You'll get better at it, just work on your launching technique man!

edit: After reading your profile I see you have Nitto's listed (I assume the NT555r's or possibly the NT450's) both of which are total piece's of s**t! Those Nitto's suck so bad it's not even funny. I've never seen a DR tire with such a worthless compound. (Ok back from bash on Nitto) I don't see a shock listed in your profile (some AGX's or Koni Sports would be great on your setup). Another thing you could consider would be running your car on street tires if you only have the Nitto's... Keep us updated

90laserRSfwd is right. YOU will need to lower your air pressure on and baby it out of the light. It will hurt your 60 foot mark. This will help your wheel spin out of first and i would ease into 2nd, then your times should look better. The time i put down was with some crappy kuhmo tires with alot of wheel spin on a almost stock setup.

Also using the ebrake to "brake boost" the car off the line could be a possibility too if you get good at it. The key to getting a decent time in a fwd is the first 330 feet. That's just my 2 cents though.

Make sure you have new stiffer motor mounts and suspension mounts, along with some good shocks and springs up front.

After that, just learn how to drive.

i know how to drive i started at 14psi and then i lowered it to 8 psi, i tried slipping the clutch, i tried 30psi, 25 psi, 20 psi, 15 psi and still i tried 2000 launch, 3000 launch, 4000 launch i ran 5 times and could get no better than a 2.4 60 ft i didnt miss any gears i was running all out and still just a pile haha the nittos did ok they got sticky but still i agree with shock dont have any and the motor mounts are stock still.... my reaction times were almost perfect but couldnt hook up!

Nittos are known not to be great for FWD cars. They are the hardest DR on the market. Through my extensive research looking at many car forums, Nittos require a massive burn out to make them hook well. If you have the money i would recommend the Hoosier DR 225/50/16 or the BFG DR 225/45/17 both have had great success with FWD.

Be careful with those DR I had those and wheel hop so bad my front diff exploded and came out the bell housing and took out the trans. Not sure what kinda of power your making but slicks are the only way to go on a FWD. Or at least a good DR Nittos FTL.

did you have a suspension and poly mounts with bad wheel hop still? :barf:

Reaction time doesnt matter unless you are racing in a competition.

What are your mods?

With a sbr stage 3 head and exhaust and the boost at 16 psi I managed a 14.1 @101mph. Somewhat decent kumho 225/50/16s, launched about 3200-3500 and had a 2.1 or 2.2 60ft. Tires were aired down to about 16-18 psi. I guess I must have gotten lucky because that was on a stock suspension.

Chin up camper. I don't see other than some power mods ( do you have any with that trap speed? I hit 90mph in the 1/8th!) that you've really done anything to prepare your FWD for drag racing. I've been taking mine to the strip for years and consistantly hit 2.0's 2.1 60 ft on All season ASX radials!. Haven't got a 1/4# in while but my 2g GST runs 8.4 @ 90 Mph in the 1/8. I outrun lesser AWD's all the time. AWD is not the answer, my GST outruns my GSX every time save for the 2 10ths the GSX has on it off the line.

Required equipment for FWD

Suspension ( stock sucks. You need some adjustment. I used Eibach Pro-kit/Tokiko Adj. Set to 2 (softer) in the Fr and full stiff in the rear.. You don' t have to have springs. an Adjustable shock alone will help you at this point.
Motor mounts. ( will firm everything up nice and get rid of wheel hop, get them before you break the tranny.
LSD ( once you stop wheel hopping you gotta deal with the peg leg and stay hooked up) I took .5 off my ET's with the Diff alone.
Tire preassure.. Once you get the above stuff working you'll find ( on street tires) that something closer to the recomended psi works best. Street tires do weird shit when you take a lot of preassure from them.

Hang in there.. Good luck.

with Nitto's I ran a 9.0 @ 90
with slicks I ran a 7.90 @ 90

same track, same weather, same tune, same everything. only change was tires.

Your car seems to be down on power, you have about the same mods that I had the first time I took my GST to the drag strip and I ran a 14.6 at 98mph and that was with a 2.4 60ft. time on 205 50 16 allseason tires.

LOL, I used to have a 93 Talon TSI fwd, same problems, just alot more stock, I ran a 10.2 1/8th mile time a 74.9mph, very high speed for such a slow time, was due to the 2.6 60ft times, I ran a 9.0 in my Mustang at only 76mph but my 60ft was 1.9, just about impossible to hook good without good tires, and track prep.

I have M&H racemasters on my 74 vega wagon with a small block swap. I know its not dsm related but ithe tires get gummy quick even for being a lil old and on the dry side and they didn't spin even while leaving the line around 3200rpm with 4.11 gears. 1.7-1.8 60 ft times.

Sounds like some good tires. Big problem with FWD is the weight transfer pulls the weight off of the drive tires, on the Vega, the transfer sat the weight back on the tires.
