Are you being serious or smart? LOL I'm trying to learn all this DSM stuff because my friend isn't to bright so I have to guide him LOL. He also doesn't have Internet so that's why I'm here. What confuses me most is how to go about all the fuel/tuning crap. Anyway, thanks for your help guys, go :laser: !

no, im being serious, knowing all this about housings and what not is a good thing, youll learn later in some big turbos they will cram a TD06H wheel inside a TD05H housing!
Good work young grasshoppa

You're definitely getting there. So you know, the 16G turbo types are differentiated from the 14B's by having twin bladed fins on the compressor wheel. The picture you show is clearly of a 14B (great turbo for a stock unit as mentioned above). To differentiate between different 16G's, which also share the TDO5H housing, you can read the serial number that usually starts with 49178-01XX0

42= Big 16G
52= Small 16G
47 = Evo III 16G

This information comes from the crew at Extreme PSI, however since wheels can be swapped between the big and the small, you can have a 42 on your casting and still have a Small 16G if the previous owner/shop swapped out for the smaller wheel and vice versa.

Hope that helps,

Andy

Leave the fuel tuning for a later date. As long as you keep the pressure down you will not need to do anything and really only want to rewire the fuel pump for a while.

You will get there.

Just some basic info for you. The 1g DSMs (1990-1994) were equipped with 14b turbos on manual models and 13g turbos on automatics. Some japanese engines were equipped with a 16g but unless you bought an overseas engine you don't have one of these.

The 2g DSMs (1995-1999) were all equipped with the T25 (T too small, T too crappy, T too much hot air, etc)

Nah the common numbers refer to the compressor wheel. So a 14b is actually a compressor wheel. However this is usually used to represent the entire turbo as until about 2002 there were few hot side wheels used. they use to clip them to simulate other wheels.

Anyway the first number is the compressor housing, the second is the compressor wheel, and the third is the turbine housing.

I believe this is correct.....

Gah! All these different turbos are confusing. We're running about 15 psi now. Someone told him 16 is about the limit before worrying about pumps, injectors, etc. Right now we're trying to open her up (intake and exhaust). Got a 3" O2 housing on the way from eBay and a 3" downpipe in the works on eBay (both SS). What's the deal with this MAF sensor? From what I gather the 2g MAF is a simple swap, while the GM 3" seems to be ideal? Don't know what we'll do for the rest of the exhaust...till we figure that out we'll just have to run open downpipe! :thumb: As for the intake, I don't even know. Would like to go 3" from filter to TB, good idea? Including a FMIC and a CAI mind you.

^^ we can learn alot from guys like that, thank you.^^^

Thanks, but I still have a ton to learn. Whatever you do, keep reading and it'll all start to make sense. Enjoy that 14B!

Sorry to get off subject with this guys but would the 13g also have the tdo5h markings like the 14b dose? What about the casting number of a 13g, dose anyone know what that would be also? Reason being is that i bought a auto/TSI awhile back, the moter had almost 200K on it in needed 'help' bad. just got it on the enginestand yesterday to rebuild it, then seen that the turbo had td05h on it in the first thing i thot was 14b! Seemed odd for a automatic knowing they came with 13g's but im still not sure. might it been replaced with the wronge turbo causing the moter to run lean and now in need of rebuilding? seems possible i guess, thats why im wondering. :confused:
thanks guys

i believe the 13g would too, its the turbine housing (im not sure if that other guy was trying to say it isnt, but i know it is from researching the 3000gt, and that car has small ass turbos that HAVE TO BE CHANGED,...LOL anyways that car has td04 turbine housing, and if you want to change that car to 14b's, ive talked with many people who have done this conversion, you have to change the exaust manifold because the turbine housing is different....) the 13g probably has the same turbine housing, as it probably has the same exaust manifold, so it would say td05h on it as well...

could be a 14B, small16G, big 16G, 18G= all in TDO5H housings.

Thats just the casting numbers on the compressor cover.. if its got a lot of blades on the compressor wheel.. its a 14b. other than that.. get a picture of it.

its not a 14b. its got a 16g style compressor blade. i was told its a 16g which is believeable but i stumbled upon a thread with the serial numbers on the housing and i was curious why my serial number doesnt match the numbers for a small 16g, big 16g, or evo VIII 16g.

if thats the case.. most lancer 1-3 turbos came with a small 16g with 510cc yellow top injectors.. its probably a small with a 14b housing that has been bored out or soemthing.

ok i emailed this guy about the engine since i needed one for my 2g and he said it was off of his 96gst but as i looked at the pictures the turbo looks like the 14b(def. not a t25) but he seems like an idiot when it comes to dsms.. so im not sure if he just did a 14b swap or if the engine is off a 1g.. any help would be great..

It is definately a 1g engine and either a 14b or 16g. It also has a 2g tb elbow and some sort of aftermarket j pipe. Why? because it is. You should be able to tell by looking. That intake manifold looks nothing like your 2g, now does it?
