2G vrsf intercooler mods?

i currently have a vrsf intercooler for my 2g build.

i will be running 3" piping from turbo to the 2.5" intercooler inlet
i will be running 3" piping from the intercooler outlet to the throttle body

question: can i cut off the 2.5" intercooler pipes on the intercooler? make holes larger and weld on 3" pipe to the intercooler instead?

will this increase my flow?
will this be beneficial?
or should i just leave the 2.5" to 3" transition?

Yea, I would get rid of any neck downs you have as that will impede flow.

do you think it would hurt AIT’s due to the increased flow through the intercooler?


I know that the step downs and ups are never good due to flow restrictions, but I’m looking to see if anybody has done this to another intercooler before. Cut off the pipes the intercooler came with and make them larger directly on the intercooler. Bigger holes bigger pipes

I know an intermittent member here, jayrome, has done a ton of customer work, including intercooler customization with new end tanks, etc etc. And generally the better you can make the transition through the intercooler, the better it's efficiency. It all comes down to wait you can package within the space given.
I don't think you're iats will be negatively effected by the mod, only helped and made more consistent.

You have nothing to gain by going 3" on the charge pipes. That and the fact that a cheap vrsf intercooler is not something you'd run on high hp build.

I know 700-800+hp cars that run the vrsf intercooler that have zero issues with intake air temps so I disagree with this statement.

I'd actually to see that data. IATs pre and post pull. I've seen guys with 500hp with over 40° over ambient, which is not very good.

So many factors will go into the intercoolers temp drop, especially in a Dyno cell. Having a couple turbo fans blowing air over the core doesn't come close to simulating actual driving conditions and the effect it has on an intercooler, but it's better than nothing.
I agree that the 3" pipe is probably not necessary, but if it's what he's using, he can't go wrong with stepping the inlet and outlet of the I/C up to the same size.

I will try to find the logs they posted on here, it’s been a few year since I’ve seen them so give me a minute. My car is back up and in the tuning phase which I can post up when done, 40+psi on a 82HTA should suffice as a semi high hp car.

WOW GUYS! you all are great! i will be up grading the charge pipes on the intercooler to 3" and ill be running e85r on my build, and as far as temp, if my vrsf starts to get heat soaked ill be looking into other options

Why don't you just get a better intercooler that already has 3" in/out like a Treadstone TR1035 or 1045, very affordable and fit a 2g perfectly.

I run the VRSF. I log intake temps and can confirm above 60lb/min by end of pull its 20 deg+ over ambient, By the end of a pass its even hotter.
