The 4G63 NT Engine, and How to make a turbo kit for it!

TimG, go with a used Startion FMIC, they can handle about 350hp and are pretty cheap.

I'm talking about putting all the fuel control stuff on, ecu, injectors, injector resistor pack, turbo mas ect. Wouldn't the ecu detect less air and put less fuel in? Its not really a big deal i'd just like to spread the work out.

no
i spun the bearing on my first turbo motor and installed my old nt engine for a while so that i could get it running. i had the turbo ecu, wiring harness, injectors, mass air, knock sensor, pump, and everything other than the motor and turbo involved in the swap. the car wouldn't run over 4500 rpm because it would get so rich. don't ask me why, but it did. i'm assuming the injectors were so big, and the fuel map so offbase that the car couldn't really deal with it. i fouled out a few sets of plugs before i got the new turbo block back in.

mavisky,

Yeah, I have seen that problem also, with out an add on fuel computer (S-afc or something similar), 450cc's are way too much. Anything more then 400cc's will flood the engine bad. I had the 550cc's from my turbo project in the car, and the same it wouldn't go past 4250-4500rpm. with out the extra air from the turbo, the engine can't handle that much fuel.

ok, I want to find something out, In the past few days I have heard from about 15 people online and local, that have seen a nt engine, with stock internals, that is pushing 6psi. I have never been crazey enough to try it. Maybe someone out there has, lets hear from you if you have done it, or know someone who has.

one of the guys in our club has one. the 9:1 pistons don't seem to mind low boost at all

Mavisky,

Do you know how much boost and what his setup is?

xhypno

7 psi. stock ecu and mass air sensor.

only real mods are the turbo and intercooler piping from what i understood. i'll have to ask him. i'm going to pick up my new axles from him tomorrow hopefully so i'll try to get it out of him then.

Mavisky,

I see your car is listed as an ES-TSI. Did it start out as the ES or the TSI? if as ES what build did you use, pistons, rods???

mine was a 2.0 nt that now has a full 90 6bolt block in it with 92 externals such as oil cooler and inake and exhaust parts. its now sporting a 3000gt vr4 pump, full intake, turbo back exhaust, and a 16g.

i'm also using a custom wiring harness with a 93 awd mt ecu at the helm.

str8, A good example of a working turbo swap.

But yeah if you can, find out the info about your friends car for me.

I'm guessing the harness is a split between the turbo and n/t harness. Just with add-ons to the n/t one? Or how did you go about doing this and what ports did you have to add or extra wires?

i'm not positive on his mas air and ecu setup, i'll have to check it out.

my car is a bastard wiring harness. started as a nt then added the wires i needed. you can see in this pic the mess i had to make to get the injector resistance pack working.

i'm not sure what kind of power he's making. but mine was running 16 psi with a huge exhaust leak at the manifold/turbo area and i ran a 14.02 @ 104.7

at only 10 psi on my 14b it hung with a stock 95 lt1 from a 15 mph roll up to 110mph. the shorter gearing in the first four gears in my nt tranny make it pull like hell

What manual did you buy to know what each wires purpose was? Shop manual or what? (I was actually going to ask about the injector resistance pack, must have been a #@%#@%#@%#@%#@%)

On top of my 94 es all motor project, I just bought a 93 GS with the 4G63, so find out about what your friend has done to his, and I am going to turbo it with stock internals and see what type of power can be made without cooking the engine.

this is a list someone else made after turboing their nt that way. looks like they're only a block away from a full on conversion like me.

------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's the list of things you need to do the conversion on a 1g. (1991-1994) it varies slightly for a 1990 so I'm not too sure on that one.
This list is the culmination of my research into making a non turbo into a stock turbo dsm safely without blowing stuff up. I do not have a how to yet because I myself am still working on it. BUT in theory it will all work. In reality, I still am not sure:

-throttle body
-throttle body elbow
-tap a hose barb into the intake manifold (for BOV line)
-uic hose
-lower ic hose
-stock sidemount ic
-turbo intake cam (at or mt depending on your tranny, exhaust cams are the same)
-stock 1g exhaust manifold
-stock 1g downpipe
-14b turbo
-stock 1g o2 snesor housing
-turbo ecu + wiring harness (the ecu plugs for the turbo ecu and several connectors for the mas, fpr solenoid, knock sensor and injector resistor pack)
-450cc stock turbo injectors
-turbo fuel pump
-turbo mas
-upgraded clutch if you have mt (act 2100 at least)
-turbo fwd oil pan
-knock sensor
-injector resistor pack
-all lines to connect turbo to water source off the head (turbotrix)
-all oil lines for the turbo (can be bought from turbotrix)
-new head gasket
-timing belt change
-rods, pistons & rings from a 6 or 7 bolt engine (depending what year your car is)
-block rework & head rework
-fuel pressure solenoid
-knock sensor
-new o2 sensor
-turbo mas (if getting a 2g mas then you need to do the 2g mas conversion)

The problem with that is that it would try to push the stock boost, and when turned down, here comes creep, unless a good MBC is used

simply run a hose from the turbo outlet elbow to the wastegate actuator.

guaranteed 7 psi that way.

I know I'm late on this post but, How do I determine the code on my 91 laser 4G63? The talon is in the 5 or 6th place in vin.

Sorry I haven't been able to post for a while. Lonewolf 2873, it should be in the in the 5th or 6th, just look at the vin for your car, if not, look one the engine code to the left of your headers on the block, or the details sticker under the hood against the fire wall.

Yeah, I finished typing the aticle on turboing the 1gnt, now to make it into HTML and getting it to Chris, to get it up.

Still waiting for paid parts, waiting for money to buy more parts and thinking about what I should do for piston change. Does anyone suggest stock 1G pistons considering the damn 2G pistons have no chance on going on the stock 1G big rods cause my machine shop is full of pussies.

I love my car and all but this turbo kit is killing me. I will finish it no matter what. I have tons of parts now. All that is left is putting the full engine together after machine work is done. Converting my n/t stuff (ie - full exhaust, fuel system intake and IC, wire harness... damn a lot) and all the fun work involved in an engine swap is left.

just use the 1g pistons, not the best, but they've been proven to work extremely well.
