I'm using a vitamin water bottle at the moment, will that not pass tech?
Nope, gotta be a Gatorade bottle or better ;)

Some places will pass it, some won't. Sometimes one inspector at the same place will pass it and the other won't. Generally it gets passed, but I think you would hate to go all the way to the track and get booted for having a Vitamin water bottle on there.

You might want to try E-bay (no seriously). They are probably pretty cheap there.

Actually the vitamin water bottle is better, thicker plastic =)

It was just a quick fix after installing my FMIC, I'd like to get a polished one in the near future.

Good to see that you're already enjoying your GoPro, LOL! Can't wait to see some video! :thumb:

Update on my car, After installing the VRSF FMIC my boost was creeping to 20+ (set at 14 psi). I picked up a used Megan Racing stainless steel tubular o2 sensor housing for $40 shipped =) I got it installed a few days ago and started working on some Boost Leak Tests.

The day before I changed the o2 sensor housing I noticed that I was only boosting 12 psi. Boost leak. From the throttle body elbow it held 20 psi. From the turbo inlet it held 0 psi. I found a HUGE leak where the j-pipe mounted to the turbo. I fixed that (as far as I can tell for now) and did another boost leak test at the turbo inlet, it held 0 psi. I found another HUGE leak where I had tapped the nipple for my MBC on the LICP. I took that off yesterday and JB welded all around it. I've been letting it cure overnight so I'll hopefully be able to get it back on and do another BLT before work. (If not I'm off tomorrow so it will get done then). I'll keep y'all updated on the BLTs and how the Megan Racing o2 housing helps with creep in the very near future.

Yeah, its pretty cool. However, I got the helmet mount and I'm not sure if you can buy the motorsports mount and use the same camera or not. If not, I'll return this one and get the motorsports version. I don't ride motorcycles anymore, I do still rip around the local skatepark and BMX track on occasion, but, the car was the main focus for the camera, so we'll see. Gotta look into it.

Wow, I hope you've got these probs ironed out with Shane's help. Your car will rip like never before once it's all set!

My buddy brought a go-pro to the track the last time, that suction cup mount is awesome. I can't believe how strong it holds to a curved glass window, it's totally reliable. Definably going to buy one of these cameras for myself to use on the yellow car this year. If I were you, I'd just swap the whole camera kit for a car mount version rather than try buying all the different suction cup adapter parts and the tethering strap stuff separate.

Awesome, I figured that's what you used! Yeah, I think I'm going to go that route and just get the proper kit....

Well, the alumium rod motor may come this season after all. I found these suckers for $260 dollars shipped to my door. ;) Im also waiting to hear back from a few people about getting some custom parts made.

Well, those certainly are pretty.......

Phil,

Noticed the 4-sale ad with the gvr4 on it. I WISH I could. I would be all over that. It looks like a hundred point car which is amazing coming from accross the states and being in conneticut. I would just love to be able to drive it and experiance a virgin vr4 like that. good luck with the sale. I guess this is funding the dsm project?

WHY COULDN"T HAVE I WON MEGA MILLIONS THE OTHER NIGHT!!!!!! Id go out and buy 7 gvr4's. I've even considered trading my dsm to get one.

thought id put mine up...
14b @20lbs
fmic
3in exhaust
255walbro with stock 450s
south bend clutch 6 puck
tuning device: unplug holes in injen intake to get un mapped air in to avoid fuel cut<-- yes it worked and still got 10.0 afrs LOL
60ft: 1.787
1/8: 8.40
1/8: 82.09 mph
1/4:13.235
1/4: 100.25 mph

ive since upgraded almost everything including the turbo (BEP 50trim) i loved the 14b but i went through 3 in like 5 months so decided to go bigger by the way that reminds me i have lots of 14b parts laying around if anyone needs any LOL

I'm sure it's a topic thats been done to death, I can't seem to find much useful info on the search.

So when you all are punishing these 14b's do you find the live longer plumbing the oil feed from the head or the filter housing? Do you modify the oiling hole size for the thrust washer? Any oiling mods? Know of anyone that machines a 360* thrust for td05 frame?

And yes I know there is a restrictor in the factory line and they were designed for less press/volume from the factory. But, they weren't designed to be over spun and produce 25+psi either. Would enlarging the the restriction a tad be beneficial?

The "Kamak" rebuild kit with the superback(?) thrust bearing seemed to help my old 16g a ton(original thrust bearing ate itself). Much more bearing area so the compressor can't pull the thrust bearing past the oil film at high psi and start eating itself. The only problem is the 14b and 16g backspacing on the compressor wheel. If you try to replace the thrust washer with the larger piece(designed for the 16g style wheel), the 14b compressor will hit the CHRA. If you can space the 14b out a touch by machining its original thrust washer to use as a spacer it'd work but difficult to do I'm sure.

With a larger surface area thrust washer I would think the little 14b would last a long time. I think plenty of crankcase ventilation is a key factor too.

My e316g just ate it as well.

Just rebuilt it. Running feed from head with factory line/drain. Using better oil this time around (vr1). And am using the anti-surge "tornado" in the 3" maf less inlet. Do you run your valve cover vent back to the turbo inlet? Any tips on a nice CCV setup? What did you do to improve yours?

thanks!

Personally I feed it from the head, I have higher then normal oil pressure with my balance shafts out even with the OFH ported slightly. And I use Brad Penn 20w50 so it should have good protection. I talked to FP and they at least said they could do the "monster thrust bearing" on a rebuild for the 14b although I don't know anyone that has done it. Most of us as far as I know are using good ol stock 14b's.

My oil cap has some baffles underneath it and a 3/8" tube for crankcase ventilation running to a catchcan and back into my intake tube. The side breather on my valvecover has been bored out to 3/8" from the factory 5/16" and also runs to a free flowing catchcan back into the intake. My 16g was gradually smoking more and more after doing a pull and this stopped it with no other changes.

Stock(has a restrictor from the factory on the turbo banjo side) oil feed from the head and stock drain. 5w-30 synthetic valvoline.

Any reason you choose the filler cap over drilling an additional hole in the valve cover? I've got a spare I can put some large breather holes in. Thank for the tip!

Yeah, I'm toying around with selling it. I really don't want to as it's one of the cleanest, if not the cleanest, unmolested, un-repainted VR4's I've ever seen, especially in the undercarriage dept., there is NO rust at all. If I get the right money, I will send it down the road, otherwise, it will become my partial street car/road race project car. I've got parts for it, and I'm ready to do some work, but, the car is so original it's tough for me to ruin that. However, my driving needs come first, so if it stays with me, it's time to mod it. I'm used to driving an EVO, so I need to move in that direction with the VR4 if it's gonna continue to put a smile on my face and be a platform that I can actually improve my driving skills with. Also, it's something that again, will take money and time away from my main focus for this year, the talon and drag racing. We will see what happens.

Oh, and I want to win the lottery too! Got 4 out of 6 numbers in the local lottery last month......$62.00! Not enough to mod the VR4!!!! or finish the Talon:D

I only ran the factory original feed off the head with no modifications at all. I run 21psi and have run as much as 23.5 with no probs...the turbo was still making great power when it blew, due to that POS compressor nut coming off. I believe that if that didn't happen the turbo would still be kicking just fine. I ran the car for 14 years like that, boost at 20 psi since 1997, hundreds and hundreds of 1/4 passes. So, I'm not sold on the fact that I need a stainless feed and I wouldn't run it off the oil filter housing no matter what. The head works just fine and noone has more time on the 14b(especially the SAME ORIGINAL)14b than me both street and strip.........

Hey there Phil and old friends. Well, I have finally made it back to the states. I have just finished serving 6 years overseas. The Talon was in storage for all that time. Bringing her total storage time to 14 years. But she is back on the road again. I am now at my new duty location. Been spending the past couple weeks getting her back up to form. Changed all cv boots, tires, fuel pump(OEM-97' 3000GT),radiator(oem),battery,plugs,brake fluid, oil & filter. Today plan on changing transaxle, transfer case & diff fluids. Then it will be a matter of getting to a track to see how she is doing.

Well, for my 14b drag racing contribution. I have had my Talon since pretty much new. Shortly after buying it I got orders to Japan and put it in storage. So it got parked in pretty much stock trim. My only mods at the time were an air filter, hacked MAS,homemade MBC, HKS fuel cut defender. Well, came back to the states in 02' and starting modifying. I had built the car up for roadcourse and autoX. So tons of suspension goodies, big brakes, big/wide wheels and some weight reduction. Well, after finally getting the car to the point of where I was happy with it starting racing it. Where I was in florida drag racing was big. So I decided to take a stab at drag racing. So went with some buddies to a local drag track to see how she would do. Hit a 12.9 out the blocks. But mind you I am an older guy with a lot of seat time. Well, got hooked. So I kept doing some minor tweaks to the car. Experimenting with race fuel, fuel trims and boost levels. Everytime out I was picking at my personal best. Then in early 2004 I had ran a few 7.7 times at our local 1/8th track. So the following day I drove to a 1/4 mile track that was about 4 hours away. Getting there late I had to tech and run all within 20 minutes, just after a 4 hour drive! Needless to say the car did great. Ran 12.1 @ 111.94. I got one more pass in after that but the shutdown around mid track. Then the track closed.

Well, less than a month after that 12.1 pass I found out I was going back overseas and the Talon went back into storage. Well, fast forward to 2011 and I just pulled her out. Feels good to be driving it again. Well, my lil 14b Talon's story in a nutshell.

So looking forward to getting back into it. I know the car has more in it still, especially in weight reduction and tuning.

Much like Phil said the stock platform is so strong already as is that I did that 12.1 pass with the

Jose!!!! Glad you're back man! Can't wait to see your car in action again!:thumb:

12.1 on the 450 injectors? How! What was your fuel pressure? AFR? Was that on street tires? Welcome back, I remember your car.

Easily believable....I went [email protected] on stock injectors with stock regulator, stock ECU and no fuel control.....
