I know there have been many conversations of a gearset stronger than stock that's not a dog box. Not trying to go there.

But every so often i search to see if someone has remade the stock gears in billet steel or something. I ran across these, any info? I sent the seller an email to see who is behind him.

No, that's a custom 4th made in Europe, not a PAR kit. The seller has been around Evo 123s for a very long time.

interesting. I wonder if he can make a 2nd - 4th that will fit in a stock AWD box. Then again might as well buy the Par kit if that happens.

You are better off just getting a reliable and more durable PPG gearset.

The hub and slider needed for using these gears have been discontinued for years.

I have had experience with Matthias' gears on Jason Tanin's LilEvo, and they lasted literally a few hundred miles before they failed. I have plenty of pics from the failure. Sent them to Matthias, never received a response. Went with a PPG in the customer car, never an issue again. I had Matthias' set modified with Liberty face plates to have a more durable 3rd/4th hub and slider option as well.

Looks to me that the root of the PPG is much more stout and has a much nicer profile than those gears and who knows about the actual material contents and after treatment of the gears.

@twicks69 are you saying your experience says don't get the par synchro box? Spend a little extra to get the ppg dogbox?

I really want the stronger synchro box and have read one good thread on the set. Dogbox just seems unnecessary for a weekend car, but if the par synchro gears won't last I don't need them.

When you mentioned hub and slider above are you referring to the par synchro gears?

The PPG was being compared to a set of gears made by an individual in Europe in this case, not the PAR kit. The European gears are a straight-cut gear from unknown material or treatment and of a smaller tooth profile, to which original synchronizers are welded. In this case, dog engagement teeth were welded to the European gear. Some failures of these European gears have become known.

Got it, great i will still grab the par kit then. Appreciate it!

Ok one more question, for those getting the ppg dogbox it says it requires an evo 3 shift rail. The part looks to be discontinued where or what is being used by rebuilders instead of it?

Well you only have two options, 91.6-92.5 dsm awd 3/4 shift rail or Evo 3 clearanced 3/4 shift rail. Both are obsolete now.

All of my parts stash were lost in the fire. I had probably 25 new evo 3 ones lost unfortunately.

Wow no billets yet. Can't wait to see you back in action!

Well when I still had the shop, I didn't have the need to make billet shift rail ends and custom shift rails. I had a stockpile of them already, and then would clearance and contour each one based on the application I was working with.

If I made shift rails with stock style detents, then I would still have to hand grind and clearance each one when working on a modified or aftermarket gearset, and extend and reshape the ramp angles of the detents.

I know Kurt Stuart (White Shed Speed) was working on a billet 3/4 rail end, but not the entire shift rail.

It seems that it is just another part added to the long list of parts needed to be remade.
