Kinetic G50 (First impressions, and then some questions)

So after a little over a month's wait for this turbo to get drop shipped from Kinetic (Originally purchased from STM), I finally get the turbo in the mail. My first impressions are that it's huge (compared to my stock T25, and I haven't seen very many large turbos in person before). It looks BNIB, of course. I immediately notice that the stamp signifying what turbo it is and what trim and other specs is missing- there is nothing there. No big deal.

I rip open the plastic and then check for shaft play- my heart sunk as I experienced about 1/8th of an inch (perhaps more) of shaft play. Is it normal for a new turbo to have some shaft play? In my experience (only with IHI turbos), they never come with any shaft play.

Also, there is a thread below mine with a couple people talking about how these turbos have been blowing pretty easy. To my knowledge, this turbo uses Garrett wheels and CHRA. Perhaps it is just poor assembly? Can I get it sent out somewhere to have it looked at and then balanced and everything?

All turbos have some shaft play(including IHI turbos). Remember the shaft and bearings don't actually touch each other when oil is going through it. This of course means there is space between them which means it will have some play when not pressurized with oil.
 
I guess that does make sense, but for some reason, the IHI turbos I dealt with (a stock WRX turbo, a VF34 and VF39) all had VERY minimal shaft play. The Kinetic G50 has about 1/8th to maybe 1/6 of an inch of shaft play.

Also, the reported cases of these turbos prematurely going makes me a bit uneasy also.
 
Side-to-side, no in-and-out. If there was any in-and-out, this turbo would be in a box with a return shipping label on it.

1992awdlaser, I noticed that you have an SBR G50, which is also built by Kinetic. What are your experiences? How long have you had your turbo in good condition? Do you have your oil feed line coming from the oil filter housing? Anything would help relating to keeping this turbo going for as long as possible is appreciated, thanks.

When I got my G50 EVERYONE advised me to go from the oil filter housing. Since this is the cleanest oil. Don't be too worried the turbo is decent it just seams like it is a hit and miss......My other buddy has had his G50 for around 6 months with no problems.
 
Mine has the oil feed at the oil filter housing. This turbo MUST get its oil from the oil filter housing.

When you install any 50 trim, and probably a few other turbos, you need to take extra care in making sure there are no kinks in the return line. The 50 trims return line will be very close to the front motor mount and some people have to grind away part of the motor mount to prevent a kink in the return line.

Also, can I use a 2G oil drain plug to plug up the coolant feedline hole? How does one go about plugging up the return hole?

Also, I remember hearing somewhere that I should use crush washers somewhere- I just don't remember where. I'll be applying Honda-Bond to all fittings on the turbo as well as back into the block. Oh, also, I don't have any gaskets for these fittings- Are there supposed to be any?

Yes. Use a rubber fuel hose and put a bolt in one end of it. Or you can take the one from off the water pipe and loop it to the one from the thermostat housing.

No crush washers are needed. You are probably thinkg of the crush washers that are used on the water lines. The oil return line comes with gaskets for it.
 
Thanks for your help. I've already purchased an oil return line and feed line kit from STM- Or at least I asked Emery to piece it together for me. I look at the lines and fittings and simply don't know where to begin. I'm in a bit deeper than I was prepared for, and I'm going to need some help.

Taking a look at the feed/return line kits, I notice that there are indeed gaskets provided. Everything seems to be in place, though I can't figure out how to get the SS line into the fitting.

I'll lay out all the fittings and pipe I received, and then I'll see if I can get some help pinpointing out what does what. Thanks again for your help.
