I have sitting in front of me, an HX-35..and an HX-40....I need some guidance on which to use considering my mods...

I am looking for 450hp - 500hp...Fwd on some 255/35/18 hoosiers. Soon converting to AWD so dont get all wheelspin bashing :p.

Now for my mods and expectations....

Stock Crank w/ ACL bearings/mains...2.0L
1G rods/6-bolt block
2G NPR pistons
BSEK
Arp headstuds
Cometic HG
oem mains/rod bolts
Delta hks 272 regrinds
Manley springs/retainers...8000rpm redline
Oem Valve seals
Brass guides
1mm o/s valves
3G lifters
DSMlink v3 w/ 3.5"GM maf / 255 wally/ FIC 1600's / AFPR
FP race manifold DSM flanged
BEP bolton housing DSM flanged
Stock intake manifold, shaved, polished/ported
stock cam gears, I know....
93 Octane tune for DD, then an E85 tune for those race days
ACT2600, streetlite FW, Street Disk for now, braided clutch hoses, etc, etc.

Now with this being said..

Which turbo do you think will help me reach my goals, have quick spool up, and good flow?

Im sort of scared that the BEP dsm flanged housing with the FP race manifld may not flow as good as say a T3? :hmm:

If anyone could give me an estimated Spool time (3rd gear), flow numbers, and/or hp curve for each turbo....

Remember im only reving to 8K because the manley springs, and my stock-ish bottom end...

Ps. I may drop in a 2.3 stroker soon here too, within a year probably, if that poses any problems.

stroker will decrease spool times so you will see even more torque but I wouldn't stroke it until you are AWD. This is a WH1C or pretty much the HX35 prototype. Same wheels just different comp cover. FP race manifold with a BEP housing. Bolt on turbo.. If you want to go t3 your spool time will increase but that might be alittle better considering FWD at the moment.

I am going stroker now with a magnus SMIM and cams so I will do another video of spool with the new set up when its done.. I am really interested to see what my results are with the mods.

The HX-35 will meet all your expectations horsepower wise in the bolt on housing. Also it will of course have the faster spool. If the 35 is a 7-blade more power to you. At the moment the 35 sounds like a great candidate for your project and a lot more info is avaliable in the Holset threads posted above.

Thanks, yeah viper Im going to stay with the Dsm flanged FP manifold because I already have it and am sort of broke. The stroker is in the future, I only have the block for now...

So, with that being said, being that I have a 7-blade HX-35...and the BEP housing, I saw your vid, thats very quick spooling...whats the difference of an Wh1c?

Thanks man.

Edit. NVM just read the difference, the v-band compressor?

I guess the hx-35 sounds good to me right now, I just think running only 8k redline would make the hx-40 really laggy for street use.

Thanks all.

Didnt even see your post, Im on my phone. Thanks though, but im still sort of wondering...

Its like 7-blade hx-35, 3500rpms - 20psi, good flow, 500hp capable
Then a 7-blade hx-40, 4100rpms - 20psi, good flow, 650hp capable

So i should see more hp/flow with less boost from the hx-40, but a little slower spool time. So shouldnt it be i guess "easier" to reach my goal with the hx-40?? Ill just have a wee bit of lag? Or is my 8k Redline not going to utilize the hx-40? Thanks guys!!

Your 8k redline has nothing to do with these turbos LOL. You have cams so your fine.. I think for your goals a hx35 would be best. It looks like you want a street monster/weekend warrior and not just a drag/dyno queen

He's just wondering if the turbo won't really wake up until after 5500 RPM's and he's only revving out to 8000 RPM's, then it might not be the best choice.

What are you building the car for? If you're running Hoosier's then I assume you'd be doing a good bit of drag racing.

I'd say either or will work, but the HX-40 will leave you a bit more room on top to play with if you want it. Plus switching to AWD and a 2.3, I think the HX-40 would be a killer setup (not that the HX-35 won't be). But basically you need to decide if you think you'll want to go bigger with your goals and then if you want the turbo to kick in sooner or later.

You might want to think about getting an in line pump to go with the 255 wally if you're going to be running e-85.

Thats where im stuck, I want a turbo with great room for expansion, If the only downside of the hx-40 is the 500rpm spool difference but it can make 500hp @ 29 psi, Idk....Something makes me want it..But then I hate laggy turbos, and dont feel like waiting for an hx-40 to "wake-up" like snowboarder said...

Decisions. damn

edit. you dont think a rewired 255hp pump can keep up with my goals?? I saw a couple set-ups where it did supply enough, and a couple that didnt.

Also, viper I saw your vids man, that spool was sick, Do you have any more videos of you doing a nice long 3rd gear pull, speedo/rpm view. :) If not thats cool

Oh yeah those drag radials I have are jsut a pair for the front when I drag. They were free and have about 20 passes left so yeah..Looks like ill be bringing extra axles with me to martin.

That pull was bone stock 2.0 with probably low compression LOL.. I can't wait to see the 2.3l 9:1cr SMIM and cammed set up LOL

For me it is like this... Its like upgrading from a 16g to a 20g.. Slower spool but more possible airflow. But honestly the 16g is a beast and it is hard to beat what it does.

The hx35 is nasty. I just fid it hard to beat the spool of it and having 55lb a min possibilities..

I think ive came to a conclusion...Im using the Hx-35...

Since I figured I mostly use 2nd gear and sometimes third around town....I can just imagine when full boost hits in 2nd gear its probably near 5000rpms, ehh, I dont want that lag..

Hx35 it is. Thanks guys

My suggestion. Get the 7blade hx35. It has a 60lb/min compressor. With the bolton housing, it will spool similar to an 8blade hx35. You'll likely not see the 60lb/min flow potential the compressor has with that housing. But who cares now since you want only about 500hp

When you're ready for 100hp more, swap to a t3 manifold (ERL would be best for fitment) and swap on the original 12cm^2 housing the hx35 comes with. At that point, you will have a turbo that spools as fast as a bolton hx40 and flows as much as the 8blade standard hx40, which is a hell of a lot of turbo for anyone typically and enough to pop a 6bolt block.

Thanks matt, I thanfully have the 7-blade and a Bep small housing. So with that, near full spool should be somewhere around 3600rpms?

Thanks!!

That varies depending on tune and such. I'd venture to guess 3800-4000 on a stockish car with a conservative tune....still awesome given it's size.

How could I make it spool at its full potential? Or is it just because its a 7-blade? So I should expect a little less spool time than the 8-blade, both equiped with the small housing..But I will get more flow out of the 7-blade? I have 272's w/ an even more ported FP race manifold, my own equal ported head, oversized valves, I hope I see 20psi by 3500 :| thats the whole reason im using the hx-35.

Also, Im feeding from the OFH with a inline filter and I have a slightly restrictive banjo fitting so my Hx-35 should see no more than 65psi of oil WOT at 7500 rpms (redline during street use) and hopefully no more than 75 at the track at 8000rpms. At least thats what my 16G sees atm :hmm:. Hasnt blown yet.

But what about oil return??? I want to run the biggest hx-35 oil return kit that slowboy sells, Its pretty cheap and I will weld on the fitting on my oil pan.

Let me know, -12 an work good?

Thanks guys!!
