There was more in the hx35 compressor wheel though. 26psi is nothing. I just think you had more in the setup as it was. But I am very glad you upgraded! An 11mph increase in trap speed is incredible!


The 'pull' that 11mph makes is what is truly incredible. I feel I have reached whatever it was I was chasing for the past 7 years. I almost don't want to go faster without big changes in traction and such but then it's not a street car anymore.
 
+ you can rebuild holsets! I'm going with the S362 personally. i tell ya what though. It was a close race for me between the Hx40pro and the S362.

GT's are good turbos, i'm not trying to knock them... In all reality though, they are old news and are getting out preformed.
 
I considered buying an s362 also. I've heard nothing but good things about Borg turbos and apparently there are quite a few Honda guys using them to make big power. Another reason I ended up with a Holset instead of a Borg or Garrett was because of morbid curiousity. Only a handfull of people have run Holsets on DSM's and I thought it would be interesting to try something out of the ordinary. BW turbos (like Holset) are fairly uncommon on DSM's and they are also rebuildable and much cheaper than similar size ball bearing Garrett models. I probably could have found a remanufactured s362 for under $700 but when I stumbled onto an HX40 that had been rebuilt like new with a 60mm 7 blade billet compressor and a divided t4 (18cm^2) turbine housing for $379 (+$98 for balancing, shipping, and ceramic coating) I couldn't pass it up. :hellyeah:
 
Well I'm going to be installing a HX40 with some 280 cams fueled by E85, this spring. We'll see how I do up at Bandi with the 5000ft + altitude. I'll definitely be posting some videos/timeslips afterwards.

I ran between 32-35 PSI on a HX35 w/BEP housing on 91 Pump. It was an animal. Long block was completely bone stock including the cams. My buddy had a 90 AWD with HKS 272's and I think a 57trim turbo w/HKS external gate. Pro tuned he ran consistent 11.5's. I was never able to make it to the track but we street raced a few times and other than the first untuned run by me we where bumper to bumper.

The HX35 is to small and spools to fast IMO. I would consider anything smaller than a HX40. If I had the money I would buy 2 GT42's. The second would be a spare for when the first one crapped out. Money being something I don't have just sitting around I'm going with the HX52 which I've had for almost 3 years now it feels. I was also one of the first people to put the "unproven" HX35 on my car. Holset's are excellent turbo's and being their inexpensive nature it's hard to get dyno runs and sometimes even cars to hold together long enough to get track slips. I do hope to get at least one slip this year before they kick me off the track for no cage.

Like dsmonster said you dont just bolt on 10s. The turbo isnt everything, its all the mods, the tuning, the weight, the driver etc as a whole that makes a fast car.

Basically if you can run 12s,11s,10s with small turbos like 14bs, 16gs then theres no reason you cant go ridiculously faster with a hx35 or hx40...
Hell Im going to run 120mph traps on pump gas with a e316g. So then strapping a turbo capable of another 25 lbs min of air flow is just retarded.
I definitely wouldnt attempt to max it out any holset though as its beyond my budget and build goals to do so.

Realistically the question is, how many running dsms have holsets on them? How many tuned and running dsms have holsets on them?
How modded are they? How fast were they going before the holsets?
How fast are holset users trying to go? Who's typically buying these turbos?
How fast do people realistically try to go before breaking drivetrains and stock motors left and right?

And to add. Just this month. . .

In a 2g, the small 58mm hx40 in the bolton housing, 7.8:1CR, stock exhaust manifold trapped 139.03mph with 2760lb race weight. That's a 580whp result (click). There was ALOT left on the table with the tune and boost as well. This was done with a stock 6bolt.

As well, in another 2g, the hx40 in the bolton housing, stock 6bolt (7.8:1CR), stock 1g intake manifold, 93 octane pump gas, no water or meth injection made 400whp corrected.

Seams like these turbos are yielding good results dispite the limitations of the builds.
 
You have to run significant boost to see 60lb/min. That's the nature of turbocharging.

You can lower your required boost with a larger turbine housing, but you still will need to run more boost than what pump gas can handle. Boost is relative and arbitrary.


A good setup should see close to 60lb/min at 23psi or so. My pump gas tune flowed around 57-58lb/min at that boost level through a revhard exhaust manifold. With the new parts I would surely think I will see the 60lb/min mark under similar conditions.

Now back to living in my "garrett stranglehold". :D
 
Yep. A longer stroke, HUGE turbine wheel, and a t4 turbine housing will certainly increase your airflow per psi number. Just like your setup.

The hx40 turbine wheel is fairly large and the bolton housing is VERY small. And has no radiused entry from the volute to the turbine blades. The FP30 turbine housing and the garrett housings have a radiused entry. It makes a significant difference in flow.

Back to my oem quality turbo which flows as much as and spools faster than a 50trim that I paid $200 for after freshening up the center section. :D

I don't know what BEP is talking about. We have compressor maps and dyno numbers. The hx40 compressor is a 68lb/min compressor and the 12blade turbine wheel flows more than the Ptrim turbine wheel. It can more than keep up. Perhaps they ar giving you a conservative flow number for the hx40 pro compressor with the bep hotside??

Just wondering, what are the limitations on pump gas (93) with the HX40? It looks like such a good turbo, and the spool-up is amazing.
 
Got it all in and running and wow!! Only have her set to 14lbs till I get my uego to tune with but bolted to the 2.3l spoolup was very good...almost 16g good! This weekend she should see about 22-25lbs which I think will make it a completely different animal. Pics will be up tonight!

cranked the boost up and as soon as i hit 20+ psi in 1st gear, i mangled a worm clamp off my GM MAF meter LOL. Thought I had replaced all of them with t bolts but looks like one got passed me LOL.On the upside i ran a 15.5 all motor no boost that run, that was better then alot of cars at the track that night! Logger froze up on second run but i have a partial log from the first run....running 1.03 and 1.05 on the o2v so im thinking she is quite rich LOL......will post new numbers next weekend when i should be running 25+ psi. But im really happy this thing went 12's with basically t25 level boost LOL.

LOL i was laughing at it when the guy handed me the time slip of the 15.5. High boost coming this weekend! Gotta get my UEGO on so i can tune this car. I think o2v at 1.03 and 1.05 is really rich. :thumb: Also forgot to add that cars are normally 2-3 tenths slower at this track due to elevation.

I'm sure you'll be able to tune out quite a bit of power once you get your wideband in. My O2 volts were at .83 and when i installed my LC-1, my afr was 9.4:1:aha:. Once i got it tuned up to 11:1, the power difference was night and day. In 4 dsms, this is the first one I had a wideband inWTF. I always tuned off of knock and tried to use narrowband:nono: But you live and learn. Although it is not a bolt-on power part, the power gained in the tune is worth every penny and to me its not tuning unless you're using a wideband:thumb:

The 2-3 tenths correction makes your runs even more impressive at low boost.
 
i just finished reading this entire thread, i have been thinking of getting a hx40 because i have heard alot of good things. right now i am running a td06 20g and i think its a great street turbo. i am fininshing up my 1st 2g awd with a 6bolt and a BC stage 3 head(280/280 and bc S&R) and a built bottom end. i know i will have to get a different exhaust mani if i go hx but my question is how is the lag on an hx40 i hit 25psi with my 20g by 3800-4000 and i can hold that to 7500. can i expect similar spool up with an hx-40?

No, the holset will hit full boost later. 25psi on my galant came at about 4100-4200 in third. But if you want to run high boost, 30+, the holset will kill the 20g.
 
well i was just looking to compare the two i didnt realy expect it to be spool as fast LOL but i was looking for someone with a simialar set up with an hx40. i really want to know if its streetable of if too big to dd around on
 
Streetability is completely relative to the owner and build. Full song by about 4100rpms in 3rd gear is just fine for some and unacceptable to others. But that's what it will spool with a 2.0L motor and bolton housing.
