Garrett & Holset Turbo Users - Your Oil Drain May Be Too Small!

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

Just check it when you change your oil. It'll cost more to rebuild your turbo than the price of the filter. Ts your call on what you want to do and I felt the same way before.

Yea I hear ya. I think for now I will run without one and then once i get my built motor done, I will run one.

Right, I noticed that as well. So its pretty much a restricter as it is, when using a -4an line.

You still need to remove the pan regardless so why not make a for sure seal. It shouldn't cost more than $10 to weld it anyway.

Ok so I don't have a lot of knowledge as far as fittings and what not goes so I'll post the links of what I got so far.

As said in previous posts, this will be used for the flange for the oil drain on the turbo.

But....can this also be used on the oil pan? Or what are people using to weld to it?

Also where can you buy -12AN lines? I am having trouble finding these and putting together the pieces for this.

Ok so if I have this right....

The flange in my previous post for the turbo.

This to convert to -12an

Then this to take the -12an and attach a hose to it.

Then another one of those -12AN 45* fittings attached to this weld in bung.

That would work. Only issue that may happen which happened to me is the overall length from the CHRA to the pan.

My final setup included a pipe fitting to hose barb right off the CHRA. It was much easier to work with and gave me enough room. I believe I have some pictures of the setup I was running a few pages back if you would like to see what I was just talking about for reference.

Yea pics would be cool. I am some what torn between using swivel's and stainless steel lines....or barb fittings and rubber (or whatever) lines.

The other side is just a standard braided SS hose end. Remember, there isn't much if any pressure building up in the drain so you don't need to worry about fittings popping off.

My basic fittings were from eBay to be honest. I did have the eBay swivel fitting leak though.

Yes you could, I made a mistake after looking at my pictures again. The pan side is a push lok fitting. But a true hose end will work as well. Just look at other members photos of their setups and get the idea of how the ends can work. Lot's of variety out there.

Im just looking for the most cost effective and easiest way to do it. Where did you get a Female to Barb -12AN fitting?

That should be everything.

EDIT: I updated the list of parts that I bought. The only difference is I bought the -12AN weld in bung off of ebay. I have the whole kit right in front of me. with the S400 flange, the adapter and the -12AN straight fitting, it just barely fits next to the compressor cover on my HX40. I dont think any material will need to be grinded off the compressor cover, if anything it will just be a little bit. Ill post pictures and an update when I get around to installing the turbo

How is everyone measuring their oil pressure at either the ofh or turbo? I remember seeing a thread where someone build a massive contraption of fittings and cant seem to find that thread right now.

I noticed some copper flexible heater waterlines at the hardware store earlier today. I'll probably end up using this in someway. I believe it was $8 7/8OD 3/4OD. Would be easy to make very slight bends with it. May even be able to retain one of the ends.

Concern I would have is it seems that there is plastic at the fittings. Will that hold up to the temperatures and the oil?

Possibly not, although it is for a hot water heater... I'd be more worried about oil breaking it down. Pleanty of straight section though to just cut the ends off. May flow better than 45's and other bends.
