Garrett & Holset Turbo Users - Your Oil Drain May Be Too Small!

Anyone tried to run something like this and have two oil drains into the pan? Then you could use smaller line (like -10AN) which will bend easier and less likely to kink.

Clarification, put the split fitting right at the turbo.

If this is true, then according to turboglenn's findings we should be able to run straight off the head. I had never seen the 30psi at load figures. And separate 10psi idle figures.

after hot i'm seeing no less than 12psi at idle from the head.. 25psi once the revs are above 1500 RPM and i can't tell once under load because the gauge is under the hood because i didn't have enough line to run it all the way in the cabin but i do plan to fix this with some more line in the next day or so

That looks perfect no kinks and a nice clean flow. Did you use a 45 off the pan?

Yea 45 an fitting of the pan and straight fitting off the turbo.

Drilled 7/8 hole in factory drain flange and pan. Tapped in ¾ copper pipe cleaned and fluxed. Soldered. Ended up with a 45 degree copper fitting soldered on after this as well. Been through several heat cycles. I'd assume if the solder were going to melt out it would have done so by now. Seems to work great. Also suggest safety wiring hose clamps so they don't loosen up and cost you an engine.


Not that I like to admit it but previously I just ran 3/4 copper pipe flared on the inside and JB welded on the outside to the pan. Actually held up fine for about a year, then started weaping. I used JB quick weld. May have held out longer with the standard JB weld.

just wanted to point out, if i didnt catch it, im only up to page 8 on this thread. but i found a -12AN oil drain kit that should work for the holset from the same company mentioned 3 times earlier in this thread for just the turbo drain flange. here is a whole kit including a weld on bung for the oil pan.

i just bought the econo push lock one, so ill let you guys know how things work when mocked up on the holset, not really looking forword to welding the pan, but the trans is already off so i guess sealing the pan isnt too hard to do, just hassle i guess.

Looks good except one thing. I don't see a 45 degree option. They all seem to be straight fittings. This won't work.

thats why you buy the other fittings, it gives you hose, and flanges for the oil pan and turbo and even a gasket!, i used a 60* off the pan and a 30* off the turbo. worked like a charm.

Just a small update for those setting up a drain for your holset.

At first I tried the usual 1/2" npt flange, but this proved to be too small after some measurements. After searching and searching and researching I found this:

It is a 3/4" NPT flange AND IT FITS THE HOLSETS!!!!!

1/2" on the left, 3/4" on the right

This 3/4" npt flange requires NO MODIFICATION to fit. (for the snap ring type compressor cover, v band covers may require modification).


This new flange will allow you to use Aeromotive or other brands of AN fittings of -12an with a 3/4" NPT thread on end. This gives us holset users a true -12an drain!!!!!

For a -16 drain what are people running on the turbo side? The 16 weld on fitting i have(to be welded to the pan) doesant clear the compressor housing never mind threading the line over it . Any one have some pictures of there set up ?

I have not purchased them yet, But I will be running two 45 degree fittings. One on the oil pan that is welded, and the other from the turbo drain.

I went for the -12an bung for the oil pan, but the hole in the bung is not close to 19mm.

I've read all 13 pages and I don't think I seen this covered, can the factory 2g drain flange be modified to fit the Hx35 oil drain? Plan to put it on Sat. but I don't have a flange and I'm going to need to have something fab. up or put it off until I can get a flange.

No you can't use the 2g oil return flange on a Holset. It's too narrow.

You can drill it out and tap and solder 3/4 copper fittings on the flange. I did it works great.

Looks nice, how well does it line up to the turbo side? It seemed small when I tried to line it up to my turbo. Hows that solder hold up to the high temps?

sorry I misunderstood, thats the piece I used on the pan side. Used a 3/4 aftermarket threaded flange for the turbo side.

Solder melts at a higher temp than your oil should ever be. It's held up fine on many of my setups. Melts at 360-370* for the soft stuff. "hard solder" used for brazing is around 840*. I've never had an issue with the soft stuff however.

I've had soldered connections on 4 turbo setups over the years now. I've never had a problem with it melting.

You can also use 3/4 flexible gas line to make things easy once everything is converted over to brass 3/4 fittings.

What fittings are you guys using with the t6 3/4 flange? I know the -12an npt fitting is tossed around but I don't like the i.d. of it. Anyone have a 3/4 npt to 3/4 barb fitting they would post i.d. measurements of? I'd love to just use a stock holset drain flange mated with the silicone hose and 2g end to oil pan, but I've been told that 3/4 hose would fit over the stock holset pipe and I've been told the silicone wouldn't fit. Measurements of the o.d. of the stock holset drain would really be nice!

Well I just got off of a Cummins site and I had someone tell me the o.d. is .860. I found a pole that is .836 and cut off a piece of the new 3/4 hose(.750) I have and its a very very tight squeeze. I couldn't get it to go all the way down. The silicone will probably expand some with heat, but what do you guys think about the stock holset?

I think is time to join this Thread.

I bought a Cummin flexible return line and mod it to fit.

I cut the line for the length I need it and weld it back to a 2g flange (Oil Pan Side), Off course, the flange was drilled out to match the bigger opening for the line.

Here is a pic of the line.

I will add another pic once Is installed.

You need to get this Line Cummins Flexible Turbo Drain Tube 21 Inch 5.9L 3934084

Then cut it in peaces for the right length.

Then, you have to use a 2g flange and open it up to fit the line.

Weld both sides back to the flanges and you are set.

Just don''t forget to enlarge the Oil Pan Hole to get the best results.

I really like the way it came up, it is flexible which is what I wanted, once I swap to a 2.4, This line will fit with out a problem.
