Saw it repeatedly in diesel forums. . . And mentioned by the guys who sell them to their diesel community.

I would love to do a HX35 setup on my GST but from what I have been hearing it would blow the tires off when the power hits. Your set up looks good man and very insightful post. Thanks.

Control boost. Or simply control throttle. No "blowing tires". Or get rubber. The hit with even a bolton hx35 is a bit more gradual than an evo3 16g. It's not an on/off switch.

I understand it is not an on/off switch. I guess what I was referring to was that the power curve of say...a 20g which is more linear would be more suited to my application. I guess I could have worded it differently. From what I have heard and read about on all the threads about the HX35 it comes on quick. I realize that the smaller turbo's will spool faster but it will not be at the same HP as a HX35. I could be wrong all together though. It has been known to happen from time to time :p, Hence the reason I am here :D

A holset hx35, or hx40 in any housing has a way more linear power delivery than a 20g. Before i had drag radials i ran a 20g at 30 psi, i was doing rolling burnouts in 2nd, and my car is awd.

td05h 20g? . . .If so exactly like my td05h 18g and my evo3 (td05h) 16g. Yep, from my experience too with all 16g turbos (td05h turbine wheels with 6-7cm^2 turbine housings). It has a HUGE, (some would say) uncontrollable characteristic 'hit'. . .Welll, it's still controllable. But it is a nusance taming. But makes the dsm a fun car for sure!!!

From my experience, throttle controls this 'hit'. But takes practice. That's why I say just control your car, with ANY turbo/cams/manifolds/stroke/etc.

My hx35 bolton started building boost earlier and saw full boost slightly later than the small 16g. with my setup as a direct swap even without re-tuning. So yes the power band is more linear, but not less potent. You will still 'blow the tires'.

I might be able to aquire a mitsu 20g for pretty cheap thats set up for an external gate. Im buying a full 3" turbo back and AFPR here within the month. Im currently running a 16g with stock injectors and a 255 pump (running way rich!) Would I be able to even touch the potential of the 20g with some 650s and a safc? Im not looking for any kind of crazy set up for my GST. Ive got a GSX that Im currently building but want some decent power (300-330 whp) in the GST.

That has no relation to holset reliability (The theme of the thread). Nor, infact, is that question related to Holsets at all. You can start a thread. But the answer to your question lies in a simple search.

Well my bad. Since we were on the "off-topic" of 20g's I thought it was an appropriate question. However, my actual build I am going to run a holset and I have read a ton about them to get as much info as I can. And this thread has arouse a question and its probly staring me right in the face and I havent noticed, but what is this "S" cover that this tsi 8urV8 is talking about in post #31?

Not necessarily, 20g was not used in a way that is off topic. It was used as a caparison to the hx35 which turned out to be misread/misinformation that I had. Granted, my post turned into something kind of off-topic but still related to Holset's. Thank you for clearing that up fellas. You revived my hopes and dreams of a hx35 build :D

I've got about 17k on my HX35 so far, boost ranges from 25-30 psi.

135* angles.... not 45. 45 is acute, 135 obtuse. XD

He's talking about the way people label AN fittings as 45* and not 135*

Depends on which side you're looking at it, but I see what he's getting at....however the manufacturers look at it as if you take a piece of straight tubing and bend it upward 45*, creating a 135* angle. They label it as the angle at which it's bent, not the angle at which the pipe makes.

Even in the Walker / Dynomax catalog they list their exhaust angles with similar bends as 30* and 45*, not 150* and 135*. That's just being a little too anal, Mr. Pitbull2o08. ;)

What flange did you use to bolt to the bottom of the turbo? How did you adapt the copper pipe to it?

Well I killed it:ohdamn::ohdamn:, as of 10/23/11 my hx40 has been dead. BUT IT WASNT THE TURBOS FAULT, MY 1YR OLD OEM TIAL WASTEGATE GOT A TEAR IN THE DIAPRAGM AND BOOST MAXED OUT MY OMNI 4 BAR BY 3700RPM, THATS 45PSI PLUS!!!! Well needless to say the shaft snapped at the turbine wheel and my car was smoking like a mofo. Drove it home and ripped it apart to find the turbine wheel broken. lost 3pi of oil pressure at idle but i think that was due to the turbine wheel being broken and the oil pouring into the exhaust, really hope i didnt hurt the motor:pray:, Did a compression test and all was fine. Anyway, I got in touch with Justin and he pulled some strings and got me a new hx40w billet 7blade. Since I wrecked the turbine housing I decided to go with the bep t3 with an erl manifold, might as well make it faster while I got it apart:thumb: Thanx again Justin. Also the front bearing and thrust bearing looked great, along with the compressor side of the shaft bearing surface. The turbine side had oil baked on it due to being exposed to the exhaust. Heres the log, 45psi plus by 3700rpm

It was pullin LOL, But im not out of the woods yet with the motor, when I was driving home I was at a light and noticed my oil pressure around 16psi at idle, hoping it was just the turbo. But on a good note my housing arived last night:hellyeah:, just got to get a manifold.

But most importantly how are you making that much boost at 3700RPM! I'm at 3psi at 3700 rpm. Will be interesting to see what the .70 housing nets you...
