Anybody ever come across this? Photo attatched is at TDC (cylinder 1 at highest point) you can see it has been timed correctly as the blue marks line up. Cams were lined up in this exact position before belt removal.

I don't think you have a 6 bolt plate. If I had to guess you have a 2g plate.
Here's my 6 bolt. Obviously this is not at TDC but you can see the relation between the keyway and the timing mark.

I think you are spot on..what a stupid thing to do whoever built this motor!?

Are we SURE that the timing plate isn't installed backwards? If you flip it, does it line up? I always mark my timing plate with a dot, or mark, to show what side is the outside.

Look at the mark relative to the key.

what you have is the 1G 7 bolt plate as its a full circle (all 1G's are) vs the 2G which is 2 pronged
Below is the 2G 7 bolt

YOU HOWEVER have the 1G 7 BOLT trigger wheel installed seen here which is WRONG for your 6 bolt

You see how the keyway is the same side as the timing mark! well thats the difference on the 7 Bolt to 6 Bolt.
the keyway is always 9 o clock on the engines but! 6 bolt timing marker is about 2 o clock
7 bolt is about 11 o clock

Thanks alot for that I'm glad it was a simple fix, thankfully I had a spare 6bolt block stored away to get the correct plate from 😀

Thats why we keep as many spares as possible LOL glad you had that as im sure 6 bolt blocks were you are tend to be kinda like gold! Very rare and not many of them in NZ. Glad you got it all sorted out and with the correct trigger wheel, least you learnt the mass differences more that you ever thought on trigger wheels now hahahaha

It amazes me that somebody would install the wrong trigger wheel:confused: The 6 bolts used to be easy to come across we were lucky to get alot of jap vr4s & n/a galants over here & they got absouletly thrashed any that are left are well looked after now or 30k imports so yea parts are definetly becoming like gold

People so silly things and they may not know the trigger wheels are different. Easily missed but when they timed it they must of seen it then and just ignored it as thats what they had at the time.
