Might give him a bit longer than a week before just letting the cat out of the bag... So to speak.

I know as much work as he did on this and help he gave on these forums and others, He deserves at least some time to respond... :)

The response I got from him last time made me feel that this would happen sooner or later.

I would hope that if he does come back, that people would donate/pay him if they use his files.

if I don't hear back from him this week and the domain is till down, I'll assume he's done for good and post the files for download.

Technically, it doesn't matter if he's gone or not. Without his express permission to distribute his work you would be infringing on his copyright. Only the copyright holder can make the decision to make them available.

I'm fairly sure mitsubishi didn't give permission for the initial code mods to be done in the first place. Unless he's got strict written copyright, and can prove it's HIS code, it's free to distribute. I'm impressed that the good stuff (SD, bigmap) has remained off-the-grid for so long, to be honest.

Either way, not trying to start a debate over copyright. I just think it would be a shame for those files to be forever lost to the community. If he's not planning on distributing them for $$ anymore, then they should be 'set free' IMO. Just like TMO did with their logger when they closed down.

I knew someone would try to make this lame arguement.

Any way you look at it, nothing gives you or anyone else the right to distribute. If you assert that Mitsubishi needed to permit the derivative work for it to be legally distributed (which I would agree with) then you still don't have rights and now need at least two permissions.

You can question the use but without explicit grants nothing is free to distribute. That's why open source or "free" software has to include legal granting of rights to use and distribute since without them it's not the case by default.

So either recreate the prior work independently or get permission.

BTW it was years before Todd gave permission to copy and distribute the TMO Logger (which he did to Jeff O.) and never that I know of granted right to use his chips. That didn't stop people from stealing.

^ Agree, but what about the ones who paid for it and either lose it over time or due to computer issues? I haven't used mine in a LONG time because I was happy with my tune. Car is being modded this year and I'm still looking through backups to find the files. Can we still get the version we bought back if it's lost since the site is down?

It's only morally and ethically wrong. The best he could do would be claim ownership of the patches. Then he'd have to prove that he was the one that wrote them. It's far from a lame argument.

If he has no plans to sell the roms anymore, then they should be released into the wild so that everyone can benefit from them.

I don't disagree that he should. There is nobody on this site besides him that can make the call to do so.

What about them? That would seem to be between the customer and seller. There isn't any provision in the law that allows a third party to be your backup service after the fact.

If you break or loose a CD or DVD can you legally ask a friend to make you a copy to replace yours?

It's not about what we would wish to be true or want things to be.
He still owns whatever he created until he gives it away or the copyright protection expires, which lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years.

I don't think a few patches to ECU code are going to be very useful at that point.

I never mentioned of doing it that way if you read what I wrote, I even agreed to your earlier post... I was simply asking if it's possible or was possible back then (when the site was up) since I haven't been on it in ages, to get a backup from him if you bought it. It was with pocketlogger that's why I'm asking. It's a legitimate question. No need to draw me a picture, I understand the law.

I agree 100%. Better features and infinitely more support.

I would honestly suggest that anyone looking to use EvoScan just use an Evo 8 ecu. They have better roms, more options, more patches, better all around. Switching the pins takes an hour tops.

Thanks, I was going to go that route with the 1g, guess I"ll be going that way with the 2g as well.

I've searched and searched and couldn't find a for sure answer.. But..

I'm using ecuflash/evoscan and tactrix 2.0 on my 98 ecu.

I can datalog with evoscan, and with updating I can now use the actuators!! they work woohoo, but I can't
get either ecuflash or evoscan to pull the ecu's rom.

sending init sequence 2

then it fails on ecuflash.

I'm thinking do I need the extra flash connector to read as well as write?

Thanks much for your response Cox Abele! The answer you provided makes me feel sane :D

I ordered a flash connector from evoscan on the 2nd, still haven't received it :(
Did get an email today stating it would be here this week.. //fingers
Got impatient went to radio shack to hunt down the 2.5mm mono plug... Brand new store.. Closed for good...

So I'm stumped, and run out of resources to search, I've already read ceddy's 47 pages, and many others and still cant figure it out.

I'm a Tech so this is like a slap in the face, anyways I have the reflash connector hooked up plus the OP 2.0 cable. I can log just fine in evoscan, use actuators, and read/clear dtc's so I'm thinking the OP2.0 is working fine. I wired in the flash connector and no change...

I've used two difference computers, windows 7 and xp, and still get the same error! I've pulled my ecu and verified I have the correct number and processor.

Here is a screen shot of what I'm encountering!
Any help is appreciated!

Here is a better picture. This is on a fresh XP SP3 fully updated system.

I need to test the voltage on the reflash plug, just to confirm i'm getting a 17 volt spike. This is the same error I got on my 7 machine.

I can log in evoscan just fine.

All my connections coming into the OBII port are snug.

I'm simply just trying to read, as if I can read, writing comes next!

Evoscan will not read the ecu's rom either :(

Any help is appreciated! This is driving me nuts, I'm loosing sleep over it :D

Well I figured it out!! I'm drastically balder now "weight reduction ?? :)" , it's not my computer or my ecu, but the Tactrix OP 2.0 2.5mm female jack receptor!

I seen a user post that he had to apply pressure to the 2.5mm plug into the OP 2.0 2.5mm Receptor, figured what the heck, and boom!! Started reading the rom!

For future readers

init 2

Must mean that OP 2.0/ecuflash can't see the 79 pin voltage!

I got this error with just the OP 2.0 cable hooked up to the laptop with no ecu invovled!

I plan on reaching out to the guys at tactrix and let them know my findings, maybe get another OP 2.0!

The fix in action LOL!

I just flashed my 98 gsx and its being quirky. Stationary rev limiter doesnt work, CEL stays on whether cel on knocksum is active or not, and it seems like it wants to die right after start up. Whats going on with this?
