The stock lower intercooler pipe pops off my Big T28 Killer when it starts to boost. Why? Do I need a hard pipe? Well i'm leaking coolant and have to go tighten this bolt down. Please give some advice Im stumped.

This is the third time i have blown off my blow threw UIC pipes! I have made sure they are very tight,it always pops off where the UIC pipe connects to the 3" MAS(First connection)I positioned it a little better and tightened them down REAL good,so hopefully this fixes it.Anyone else have similar problems? The pipes are from Dejontool, and i have HKS BOV(Too stiff?Maybe i should loosen?).Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance:D

I had the same problems when I installed my 3" MAFT. Your connector is blowing off. The one between the GM MAF and the throttle body correct? The air is hitting the reducing coupler and pushing it off. I had the same problem. I even use T-bolt clamps and it still came off. Here is what i did to fix it.

Go go your local hardware store and buy some short sheetmetal screws. Assemble the MAF/couplers/Tbolt clamps. When the entire assembly is together, DRILL 4 holes THROUGHT the CLAMP, the COUPLER, AND the MAF, completely throught. Then thread the sheetmetal screw in there. REmove the screw, then goop some RTV onto the threads and rethread in there. Wait for the RTV to completely dry befor eyou isntall, run. Do it for both sides. I guarantee the coupler will NEVER come off.

Basically you are doing the exact same thing the Top Fuel/Funny Car guys do to their slicks to keep the rim from spinning INSIDE the tire. They drill 1/2" studs thru the tires to keep everything in place.

Lemme know how it comes out.

That's a dumb idea. You'll notice that the 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 second guys don't have to do this to keep their pipes from blowing off at 30 psi.

You need to do several things:

1. Make sure all surfaces are clean and free of oil
2. Make sure all clamps are sized properly
3. Make sure that the hoses are not being pulled tight.

Then, if you're still having problems, you can use sandpaper to slightly roughen up the surfaces, and then drive the car easy for a day. The heat will actually bond the surfaces together.

IC pipes that are clamped properly should not blow off, you don't need to go all ninja on them.

Why don't u grab a welder and weld a bead around the ends so that you have something that will give u some meat to clamp on to. It doesn' have to be a completed bead just a few built up areas on the pipe to give that coupler something to hold on to.....I'am doing that next week to mine.:thumb:

Those 8, 9, 10, 11 second guys aren't using a 3" MAFT and having it neck down into a 2.5" coupler are they? When you have air flowing through a uniform diameter, then there is no reason why they should come off. But when you have air flowing thru a 3" section, then it hits the walls of the 2.5" reducer, it pushes it out.

I may ahve gone alittle gungho with it, but I wasn't dealing with it blowing off again. Now, all you gotta do is fine someone else running 120+mph traps, with a reducer and ask them. As for teh welding beads on, if you ever tried to put a 3" coupler over the end of the MAF, you will see that a bead isn't going to work. It's a major PITA just getting the coupler over the MAF end itself, much less trying to get it over a bead as well.

Mine has never come off at the mas. It has however blown off of the stock sidemount a few times, i just had to hella tighten it. 2.5 inch pipe necking down to that tiny as smic is hard to tighten properly... Until I get my supra sidemount that is! I really dont know what to say, try taking it all apart and redoing it, straight and TIGHT. Keep turning that screw even when it feels like you cant. A little praying doesnt hurt...

And _always_ have a screwdriver in the glovebox, sucks to have it pop off and have to drive home N/A hehehehehe!!!

I second hairspray...but if you can, get a TIG welder (heliarc) to weld a bead on there for you....JB weld might work....

I will stick to my convictions that something is wrong if you are blowing IC pipes off. The GM MAF does have a small bead on it, and it's so difficult to fit couplers on there, that I think mine wouldn't even blow off without any clamps at all. Try new clamps, make sure the surfaces are clean, and make sure the clamp is tight enough and squishing the hose enough that it's basically impossible for it to slip off the bead. Just don't squish the hose too much. :)

As to the theory that as the air transitions into the smaller pipe, it "pushes" on the walls: It's not true at all. Since there is a set airflow within the IC pipes at full boost (although this airflow changes due to VE through the RPM band, but we are only talking about one point), then what really happens is the opposite of what you described. As the air transitions into the larger MAF, it slows down due to the greater cross-sectional area, and the stagnation areas around the outside of the pipe increase in depth. Then, as the air transitions back down to the smaller diameter of the TB elbow, its speed increases again, and the stagnation zones decrease in depth. If anything, this increase in velocity will lower the pressure exerted on the pipe walls, relative to the pressure exerted inside the larger 3" MAF section.

Hey guys...I bought some aluminum IC piping (and a greddy bov) with neopream sleaves and installed it on my 2g a few days ago. Test drove it, one side of the elbow on the upper piping popped off...so we doubled up on the clamps...then one on the lower piping (by the turbo) popped off...so we doubled up on the clamps on that one and even sanded the ends of the piping where it fits onto the sleave....i drove it home tonight and pushed the turbo a bit and the lower piping by the intercooler popped off. I CANT WIN! All the clamps are doubled up on...what can i do now? Thanks

No its not beaded at the end. Does anybody have IC piping that isnt beaded, but still works fine? I'll probably have to try that hair spray thing. One of my friends also mentioned T-clamps like someone here did....what do those look like? pic? whats the difference between those and regular clamps? thanks for the replys

yea those t clamps look good. Kinda expensive since i would need 10 of them tho. but i may have to do it anyway.....still wondering if anybody else has IC piping thats not beaded....i cant be the only one!

When you tigthen the clamps are you just getting them as tight as you can with a screwdriver??? Because thats not tight enough.

Put a wrentch on there and you'll discover what your thought was tight can actually be turned 3 or 4 more times.

yea im using a screwdriver to start with, then tightening them with a socket wrench.

About the JB Weld....i dont know if adhesive would be the greatest idea if im gonna want to take it on and off sometimes for whatever reason....is that what u were talkin about?
